Town Hall Meetings - Potential School Consolidation
The School Facilities Capacities and Declining Enrollment Board Ad Hoc Committee held its regular meeting this week, hearing from students, families, and staff about potential school consolidation due to declining enrollment. In an effort to get more input from our students, families, staff, and communities, the Committee will hold two town hall meetings in February, on the 7th and 15th. Cerritos High School Senior Gets Research Published
Whitney High School Earns AP Award
For the second year in a row, Whitney High School has earned the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding access to AP computer science principles. Research shows that female students who take AP computer science courses are more likely to major in computer science in college. Whitney High School is one of only 834 high schools in the nation to earn this award this year.
ABC District-Wide Film Festival
This is the first district-wide ABCUSD Film Festival open to all students: elementary, middle, and high school. Families are invited to enjoy food trucks, student artwork, and the music from our district school bands. The event held in the Grace Hu auditorium at Whitney High School is sure to highlight our amazing CTE programs. Join us March 20 from 5:30-8:30.
1/16/24 Board Meeting Recap
The ABCUSD Board of Education held its regular meeting on Tuesday, January 26, 2024, and took the following actions:
- Students from Elliott Elementary School led the flag salute
- Received a report from Ashley Martinez and Natalie Velasquez, Student Board Representatives from Artesia High School, highlighting activities and events from the school year, including report card night, the Renaissance Program, College Application Workshops, school carnival celebrating improved testing scores, and a canned food and toy drives
- Recognized the Cerritos High School football team who won the 2023 CIF Southern Section Division 12 Championship
- Recognized the winners of the 2023-2024 Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month Poster & Essay Contest
- Heard a presentation on the California State Seal of Civic Engagement and recognized students from Whitney High School for winning the Congressional App Challenge through Congresswoman Steel’s office
- Adopted Resolution 23-15 acknowledging January 2024 as School Board Recognition Month
- Adopted Resolution 23-16 acknowledging January 13, 2024, as Korean American Day
- Approved request to contract with Center for Autism & Related Disorders to provide in-person behavior intervention support services for preschool students in need of support in the Head Start Program for the 2023-2024 school year
- Approved request to contract with TPR Admissions Counseling, LLC DBA Collegewise to provide college advising for 150 11th-grade students representing the unduplicated student groups at Artesia, Cerritos, Gahr, Tracy, and Whitney High Schools for the 2023-2024 school year through December 2024
- Approved request to contract with United We Lead Foundation to provide two Math Family Night sessions and materials for 50 3rd-6th grade students in the Migrant Education Program for the 2023-2024 school year
- Approved request to adopt the textbook titled The Successful Internship, 5th Edition, for the 2023-2024 school year
- Approved Bid Award ABC-1633 Horizontal Wrapper Machine to PlatinumPackaging as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder
- Approved Bid Award ABC-1634 Cold Storage at Whitney High School to Cal-City Construction, Inc., as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder
- Approved Bid Award ABC-1635 Lead Abatement to Air Clean Environmental, Inc., as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder
- Accepted the District Annual Audit Report and the Measure BB General Obligation Bond Audit Report from Nigro & Nigro, PC, for the year ending June 30, 2023
- Received a report on the Quarterly Williams Settlement Compliance Report for October-December 2023, with no findings
- Received a report on the results of site visits, reviews, and uniform complaint data for 2022-2023 with no findings

In 1965 the Artesia, Bloomfield, and Carmenita School Districts unified and became the ABC Unified School District. Today, the District serves over 20,000 Pre-K to 12th Grade and adult education students through its 30 campuses, adult school, and virtual academy. The District is home to some of the most awarded and recognized schools in California and serves the cities of Artesia, most of Cerritos, Hawaiian Gardens, as well as portions of Lakewood, Long Beach, and Norwalk.
