APRIL 3, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
You may have noticed . . . our construction & trades classes have begun to build a new house in the Able Street parking lot. While they worked on several smaller projects this year, including a complete garage build in our community, they are now partnering with Elevate Hope House to build a house. I am excited for the student learning and positive impact this will have in our community.
There is a lot happening in the spring and here are a few things I hope you will track:
- Tomorrow, April 4, we will host our third annual career fair. Students will have a chance to meet and mingle with nearly 100 different employers and explore both short and long-term career opportunities. This is a great event. After school tomorrow, ask your student about their experience.
- On Tuesday, April 9, juniors will be taking the ACT. All other students will have a distance learning day. To provide the most ideal testing environment, students is grades, 9, 10 and 12 will have a distance learning day that day. Thank you for helping us create the conditions for our juniors to do their best on the ACT college admissions exam.
- On Wednesday, April 10, connect with your student's teacher(s). We have parent-teacher connection and communications times set for April 10, 3:30 – 6 p.m., and May 8 from 3:30 – 6 p.m. You can read more about this and sign up for times with your student(s) teachers using the link in the Need to Know section.
- Opening Friday, April 19, is the spring musical, Beauty and the Beast. All families are invited to come out for at least one performance of Beauty and the Beast, which opens on April 19 and runs over two weekends. Our student performers are talented and courageous, and I look forward to connecting with you at one of our shows.
Last week, we had our latest Possip pulse check. We are currently reviewing the feedback and working through following up on the insights and thoughts that were shared. Here is a quick overview…92 percent of the 361 respondents were happy or mostly happy with Spring Lake Park High School last week. Responders cited the wide variety of class offerings, amazing teachers, and a wonderful environment for molding students into respectful and responsible individuals as reasons for their satisfaction. We are also reviewing concerns about student substance use and the impact on the environment and addressing some questions about curriculum and communication as well as our substitute teacher shortage. We will follow up on these in coming weeks.
Thank you as always for your steadfast support and partnership. One school, one community, #SLPPantherProud!

SLPHS para featured in U of M alumni association booklet
Shoutout to Scott Aho, high school special education paraprofessional, for being featured in the U of M alumni association booklet!
In the feature, Scott says, "I built my major through the Program for Individualized Learning. My major was the history of popular culture in the United States with an emphasis on automotive history. I've always had an interest in automobile history, and I met a professor at the University of Minnesota who said, 'With your interests and your knowledge, you could build your own major.' So I pursued it and got a degree!"
