A Principal Update by Ms. Scorso
Happy New Year LES!
Dear LES Community,
Happy New Year to our school community! During this half of our school year we will focus on student progress, goal setting, and positive behavior expectations. We will continue to make improvements with attendance as School is Better with You!
In November, our teaching team explored ways to promote student agency and voice in their classrooms. To learn more about student agency and how it creates a sense of belonging and efficacy in the classroom and school, click on the title below!
Soon our students and teachers will celebrate the 100th day of school. This day always marks how far we have come. We will celebrate our accomplishments and set goals to finish the year strong.
I hope 2024 is full of gratitude, health, and happiness for you and your families!
Best,
Ms. Scorso

Happy New Year! I was so impressed with how many LES students completed the Winter Break Reading Challenge and read over the holiday break! We had 111 students participate this year. Nightly reading makes such a difference in our children’s reading development. This month, LES students in grades K-2 will be taking the winter iReady diagnostic assessment. Our 3rd and 4th graders took it in early December. This is an adaptive assessment given three times a year (twice in kindergarten) that helps inform teachers about how their students are progressing, and how teachers can meet each individual child’s learning needs. The reading assessment measures progress and strengths/challenges in phonemic awareness, phonics, high frequency words, vocabulary, and comprehension. The math assessment measures progress and strengths/challenges in numbers and operations, algebra and algebraic thinking, measurement, and geometry. Teachers use this data, along with curriculum based measures and Dibels, to set individual learning goals and guide their instruction. This resource link explains the domains measured on the diagnostic. Here is a quick video for families that explains the iReady diagnostic. Have a happy and healthy 2024!

The New Year is the perfect time for students to reset and review our Husky expectations. Classroom teachers have been reviewing classroom, hallway, bathroom, cafeteria, and recess expectations. Please review expectations at home as well, especially regarding safe bus expectations. On the school bus, students should stay in their seats at all times, sit on their bottoms with their feet and backpacks out of the aisle, have a quiet voice so the bus driver can concentrate, keep their hands to themselves, and be kind to others. Please remind your child to thank their bus driver each day as well.

The Math Minute
Happy New Year! It’s hard believe it is 2024 already. January has been off to an exciting start. We kicked off the new year with a Book Tasting for grades 2-4 to kick off our Reading Hall of Fame. This was an exciting time for math as we introduced a new genre focused on math story books! The students were so excited to read some of the sample books provided and to hear I have additional books available to check-out. Math story books are a great way to introduce and support many math concepts. Try reading a quick math story before bed! Some of my favorite authors of math story books include Marilyn Burns, Stuart J. Murphy, Greg Tang, and Cindy Neuschwander. Below are some links to help you get started!
- Favorite Math Picture Books: a blog reviewing a collection or math story books
- Children’s Books that Foster a Love of Math
- 80 Educational Children’s Math Picture Books: includes brief descriptions of the books and links to purchase
These are just a few sites to support the literacy and math connection at home. Please feel free to reach out if you would like more strategies or resources on this topic. I am always happy to share!
Happy Math,
Mrs. Francis (Math Interventionist)
SEL Update
In the first week of January returning from break, LES teachers took the time to focus on reviewing school and classroom expectations. LES follows the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) model. Classroom and school wide expectations stem from the four tenets of PBIS which are respect, responsibility, honesty and safety. LES had a PBIS assembly January 12th to continue to reinforce school wide expectations, honor our Huskies of the month for the months of November and December and to reveal our next school spirit day!
Happy New Year!
