@your library: The Book/Makerspace Club will be held on the 3rd Thursday of every month!
The Literacy Pumpkin Patch.........I'm so excited........I just can't hide it............
I cannot wait to see all the "book character pumpkins" that are entered into the school library contest. Remember that it's not just for students and that you too may enter the contest and compete against your fellow colleagues for a special prize! *All pumpkins are due on October 20th. Don't forget that carving is not allowed unless it is an "artificial" pumpkin. Happy decorating!
Reading Online
Another great resource is called Storyline Online. Click here to enjoy this resource.
Storynory is another website to explore. This website is from the UK and has a diverse collection of classics and a few nonfiction titles. The Colony Public Library's website also has a link to Freading.com which offers up books for children as well as adults too.
* Or at this website you can record yourself reading a book: http://www.astorybeforebed.com/storytime
There is also an app for that! This has got to be my favorite thing since sliced bread!!!! There is a free ipad app called Epic! - Books for Kids. To download this awesome app and have access to thousands of children's ebooks, click here!
Need an idea for a field trip? *Bonus: this field trip will also include math!
Are there books about math in our library? Why....yes...yes there are! Below is just an example of some of the books @your SCE library:
More M & M's Math
Math Curse
The Grapes of Math: Mind Stretching Math Riddles
Would you like to assess your students in a more interactive, fun and engaging way?
Socrative is a free and very easy to use tool that works on any web-enabled device including laptops, ipads, iphones, ipods, android tablets, Chromebooks, and just about any smartphone. It's too easy and useful as an instructional tool not to use!
There is also Infuse Learning which is very much like Socrative. It lets you create a free account, design quizzes and more that kids can respond to. Then it collects the data and organizes it all for you. It also has a couple of bonus features too. You can create different rooms for different groups of kids. You can add images to questions and there is a text to speech option! Users can also use their tablets or phones to create a diagram or add a drawing to their answers. Just a few little extras to reach a bit wider audience of learners.
Kahoot.it is also a nice resource. If you like Nearpod, Socrative, and Infuse Learning, you will LOVE Kahoot! Think formative assessment with a gaming element. It's all online so no app to install but it can be used with a variety of devices. Add pictures and video for an interactive experience! Find Kahoot! at getkahoot.com. Students will need to go to Kahoot.it.
There are many other tools available for assessment. These are just a few of my favorites. I'd be happy to help you create a quiz at any time.
Literary Happenings
Author Signings:
Are there any Jodi Picoult fans in the house???? If so, she will be at the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas on October 27th at 6:00 pm for an author's reception. Afterwards, there is a free author's talk at 7pm. Who wants to carpool?
The Arts:
Everyone's favorite bears from the children's book series, The Berenstain Bears, wil be performing live on October 19th at the Eisemann Center in Richardson. Click here for all the "deets". Here's a clip to see what parents have said about the performance.
Sights & Sounds:
Are you going crazy for pumpkins like me and are you In the mood for a family outing? Then head on over to the Pumpkin Village at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. There are more than 50,000 pumpkins included in this colorful, autumn themed display.
In the just plain cute department!!!! Do you have a little one at home that is trying to learn how to tie his shoe laces?
You have 2 options, maybe 3. ; ) Option 1 - there is a slot on the left side of the circulation desk and you may drop your books in there anytime. Option 2 - you may leave them in my mailbox. Option 3 - if you need me to, just call / email me and I can swing by and pick them up!
Can you get a copy of a book for me from another school?
Yes I can. It's my job. Just remember to send the request to me in an email (even if we have discussed it in person because I'm super forgetful) and I will take care of the rest.
