Dear Parents
You may have noticed a yellow asbestos awareness sticker near the front entrance to the office.
All Western Australian public schools are required to display this sticker at eye height near the front office or reception. This alerts contractors, tradespersons and any other people that may undertake work at the school that asbestos containing materials may exist at the school. They must check with the school’s Asbestos Containing Materials Register before commencing any work.
This register is kept at the front desk and is always available to contractors and their workers. It is also available to school staff and parents as information on managing asbestos containing materials in schools and work places.
The Department considers the safety and welfare of students and staff to be the highest priority. Making all contractors aware of the presence of asbestos containing materials is a key part of the Department of Education’s asbestos management strategy.
If you have any concerns regarding asbestos containing materials at the school, please do not hesitate to bring them to my attention.
To assist with our student leadership, we now have a Student Council with students from Years 6-12 voted by their peers to ensure a student voice and to lead some initiatives in the school. Ms Ingoe, our secondary English teacher, will be the coordinator for the group. Congratulations to the students selected and I look forward to seeing you develop as leaders.
Last week our Year 11 students and some selected Emergency Service Cadets completed their Senior First Aid training with Mr Pendlebury at the St John Ambulance Centre here in Jurien Bay. The training is something that the school has committed to for the last few years, providing students with skills that we hope they never have to use but may save a person’s life. Mr Pendlebury is passionate in sharing his skills and knowledge with our students and we thank him for his ongoing support.
The middle and upper primary classes have completed swimming lessons for 2020, they were lucky this year that the weather was warm and the wind stayed away for most of the lessons.
It has been good to see great participation levels in all sport activities this year. Students should dress appropriately for sport and may change if required (particularly secondary students). Parents and students are reminded that a hat is necessary protection and students are only permitted to bring and use roll on deodorant at school; no aerosol cans.
All primary classes have held parent information sessions, thank you to those who attended. I hope you found the meeting informative and I urge all parents to make contact with teachers should you have any issues or queries throughout the year.
Secondary classes are now all using Connect. This is a program developed by the Education Department to allow staff to post work, assessments, messages and information for both students and parents. All parents of secondary students have been emailed details of how to access Connect. If you have not received your login details or require assistance, please contact the school.
Next Friday Years 3-12 will be joining in our annual Beach Carnival. This is a day of mixed swimming races, team and individual games for all students on the beach near the town jetty. Ms Briggs and Ms Cameron have planned a big day and we expect all students to participate. The events are structured to ensure that there are events for all students; from strong swimmers to very beginners.

STAYING SAFE ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Cyber flashing and Airdrop
Airdrop allows people to wirelessly share images and files quickly using Blue Tooth technology. It's immensely practical, makes transferring large files easy, and very simple sending images from phones to your laptop, but it's not always wonderful.
For more information on why AirDrop may be a problem, click on the following link,

Headlice
Head lice are tiny insect parasites that live on your head and feed on your scalp. Head lice are spread by head-to-head contact with another person who has head lice. This kind of contact includes doing group work, playing, or hugging.
Tips for preventing head lice
- Check your child’s hair regularly for head lice and eggs (‘nits’). Use a metal fine tooth ‘nit’ comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, iPad apps, offer a head massage.
- Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible.
- Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads.
- Avoid sharing combs or brushes.
- Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, or when playing, or hugging.
If your child has head lice please notify the teacher.

- Request the Head lice Fact Sheet available from the school
