Message From Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Community!
Hooray! Thank you, we saw some improvements in our Covid numbers this week at Shaw and we welcomed back one of our quarantined classrooms! We will continue to keep you updated on vaccination clinics in and around Phoenix should you wish to participate.
Please mark your calendars and save the date for our Holiday Tax Credit Concerts for the kindergarten-8th grade student. The concerts are scheduled to be held on Tuesday, December 7th for the kindergarten-3rd grade and Thursday, December 9th for the 4th-8th grade music students. This year, we will enjoy our concert outdoors in the primary/elementary section of the school. We will have lawn seating so please, plan to bring your blankets or portable folding chairs! You will find general information below. More fun events are planned for these evenings. Watch for concert coverage in future See Shaw Shine’s as the concert date approaches.
We are in need of light strand donations for our holiday concert (some areas of our campus are a bit dark). Should you wish to donate we are looking for the small white incandescent lights (not LED), green wire, in bulb counts of 200/300.
Wishing you the very best,
Principal Engdall

It will be a night when dreams are created!
Please read the attached documents for concert details (children will need to be at school by 5:30 pm) and you may reach out to eric.bonds@phxschools.org with any questions. We look forward to seeing you at this special event.

Message From Nurse Rose
Covid Cases this week:
Students/staff: 3
Family members: 2
Weekly Pooled Testing Update: We now have 208 enrollees in our Pooled Testing and 21 Pools. Our Tuesday’s pooled testing found 1 positive pool out of 21 tested. This involved 9 students/staff who all tested negative when tested individually. Our Covid 19 numbers are finally slowing down and we continue to enroll for the weekly Covid Pooled Testing. You can use the following link to sign up your student:
http://testcenter.concentricbyginkgo.com//minor-consent
Access Code: APC54P
FYI: District Covid Policy Information: If a student/staff member tests positive for Covid 19 they will need to isolate for 10 days at home. The 10 days starts on the day of symptom start or date of positive test, whichever comes first. If a student/staff member is fully vaccinated for Covid 19 and they are exposed to the virus they do not need to quarantine and can remain in school as long as they exhibit no symptoms associated with Covid 19. Any Covid/Health related questions you can reach me at 602.257.3900
Thanks!
Rose Prasad RN

Vaccine Events
COVID-19 Pediatric Pfizer Vaccine Now Available for Children 5 to 11 Years of Age
Are you looking for a convenient location to vaccinate your children and members of your household? All children 5 to 11 years old are now able to receive the Pfizer pediatric vaccine.
According to the CDC, “Vaccination, along with other preventative measures, can protect children from COVID-19 using the safe and effective vaccines already recommended for use in adolescents and adults in the United States. Similar to what was seen in adult vaccine trials, vaccination was nearly 91 percent effective in preventing COVID-19 among children aged 5-11 years. Vaccine side effects were mild and similar to those seen in adults and with other vaccines recommended for children. The most common side effect was a sore arm.”
For more information on these vaccine events, please click on link below:

iReady homework in Reading and Mathematics for K-8 students
Students are expected to log in each day to work on reading and/or math as part of their assigned homework. The students will work on either teacher-assigned lessons or their My Path. The My Path assigns skills based on the fall iReady diagnostic. We take the diagnostic 3 times per year. Our next diagnostic will be in January. Student's time on task will help prepare them for the next diagnostic as well as support with supplemental classroom and grade-level skills. If a parent or guardian has questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

8th Grade High School Packet Requests
Have an 8th grader applying for high school? Typically a receiving high school will request a packet of records from your students past few years of school. We are well versed in what documents are requested and can have a high school records packet available for parent pick up 24 hours after we receive your request.
Packets will have to be picked up by parents personally at the school office and will not be sent home with your student. Sorry in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

Garden Update
Greetings!
We continued our lesson on flowers this week. We learned about different pollination techniques and admired our different pollinators at work in the garden. The STIGMA, one of our flower anatomy terms, plays a crucial part in fertilization. Quiz your student on that term and see if they remember whether it is part of the female or male anatomy system. Some new flowers sprouted that we were able to pollinate as well. We will work with zinnias and our newest blossom, cosmos, up to Christmas break.
The hens finally started laying! The students have been retrieving eggs all week. They really enjoy this process. It’s like their own Easter egg hunt each week. Primary grades will collect eggs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure your students leave the eggs for the littles on these days.
Our tree planting has been placed on hold while we coordinate the concrete pour for the outdoor kitchen. Please be wary of the holes on campus. We don’t want any accidents.
We can always use coffee grounds and can donations. Please make sure the coffee grounds have been brewed. You can pick up used grounds at Starbucks for free. We also prefer that your cans are uncrushed (the small kiddos love this task), however, we will accept crushed cans as well. You can drop them off at the table outside of the front office entrance.
We still need your Home Depot donations. Even $25.00 is a huge contribution. Here’s the link to Home Depot gift cards: https://www.homedepot.com/c/Gift_Cards
