Oak Hills Lions have been learning all about and preparing for the historic solar eclipse that will occur on Monday, April 8th. Our science teachers will have safety glasses and activities for everyone to be able to actively participate, weather permitting. We cannot stress enough that safety is our top priority! Please help reinforce this with your student over the weekend so that they can safely enjoy this celestial event. We encourage everyone to review the recommended safety precautions from NASA here: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/
If you do not want your child to participate, please call or email your child's Assistant Principal: Amy.Gollogly@misd.org or Preston.Clark@misd.org 936-276-4300
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
PARENTING WITH PATIENCE
Practicing patience is no fun. Waiting in line, waiting for results, waiting for dinner to be ready all can be reasons for impatience, anxiety, and frustration. However, the truth of the matter is that waiting until later is a fact of life. As adults, we know that. But we also know that we have schedules to keep and places to be, and that can shape our behaviors. And our teens are watching. When we demonstrate impatience with others, with ourselves, and with them, one of the things that they see is how we value ourselves and our time over (or less than) the time of others. In other words, our impatience can be seen as how we value others. Helping your kids see the value in what they are waiting for and laying out what might happen while they wait can help them make choices that will set them up for success. For example, not turning in homework on time will jeopardize letters of recommendation, missing an early curfew loses the trust needed to set later times, and so on. Having tough conversations about what they do while they are waiting won’t make the time go by faster, but it might help your family set goals or priorities while you wait.
Questions for parents to consider:
• How do you find patience when your nerves are wearing thin?
• Patience can be a more “internal” value. How can you call attention to patience when you see it or practice it?
Questions to ask your child:
• When is it easy to be patient?
• When do you have trouble showing patience?
• What are you waiting for that you are excited about?
• What things can we commit to doing while we wait for those big moments?
How can our family help you?
THE CLINIC CHRONICLE
Hello Lion Family!
We can’t believe that it is already time for end of the year & summer reminders! Where did this year go?
Contact Information- We would like to remind parents to update all contact information. We need e-mail addresses and phone numbers in Skyward as up to date as possible. This helps us contact you when your student does not know phone numbers and it allows us to send you updates from the clinic if needed. Parents, please ensure that your students know and practice their important phone numbers. This may seem like a silly request, but it is an ongoing trend we see here in the clinic. Many students do not know a phone number to contact their parents and if it is not updated in Skyward, and they do not have a cell phone, it leaves them unable to contact anyone.
Medications- We do not hold medications over the summer for the next school year. All medication that is not picked up on or before 5/23/2024 will be disposed of! We cannot send medications home with students.
ID Badges- Please ensure that your student has their student ID daily. We require students to have their ID and a pass to be seen in the clinic.
Immunizations- 6th Grade Parents -It is time to prepare for your students upcoming 7th grade year! The State of Texas Immunization Law requires a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine (with in the last 5 years) and Meningococcal Vaccine for 7th grade. Students that do not have these vaccinations WILL NOT be given their schedule at schedule pick up.
*If your student has an exemption the original affidavit must be turned into the clinic, not a copy.
We hope you have a happy and healthy rest of your school year!
Thank you!
Nurse James & Mrs. Bailey
*Information on exclusions from immunization requirements, provisional enrollment, and acceptable documentation of immunizations may be found in §97.62, §97.66, and §97.68 of the Texas Administrative Code, respectively and online at https://www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/school/default.shtm
*Instructions for requesting the official exemption affidavit that must be signed by parents/guardians choosing the exemption for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, can be found at www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/school/exemptions.aspx . The original Exemption Affidavit must be completed and submitted to the school. The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption simply because of inconvenience (for example, a record is lost or incomplete and it is too much trouble to go to a physician or clinic to correct the problem). Students may be excluded in times of emergency or epidemic declared by the commissioner of public health.

Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
