President's Message

The devastation and senseless tragedies that Texans have faced this year have not broken us but have brought people of all walks of life and backgrounds together. As school nurses, we need to strengthen our resilience so in times of stress and adverse experiences, we can help those in our care. We need to take care of ourselves- reflect, relax and recharge.

Reflect on this past school year. What made you struggle? What did you learn? What did you achieve? Whose lives did you touch? What do you want to accomplish in 2018-2019? What do you need to do to make that happen? Reflective practice, if done well, can greatly improve your skills as a health care provider.

Relax and practice self-care. There are potential effects of self-care to increase our effectiveness and influence positive student care outcomes. (article attached below) Self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being.

The end of the school year can bring with it a realization that you are exhausted and drained. Summertime is a perfect time to recharge. In order to recharge and get motivated, it’s important to give yourself permission to pause and do something enriching for you. This will give you a chance to redirect your focus and energy.

NASN Update

Each year at the NASN Conference they have a Purses for Nurses Event which is a silent auction to raise money for the NASN Endowment. This year they will not have it but instead, please consider donating to the President's Challenge $50 for 50 years. The Endowment is an investment in future research, special projects, and scholarship opportunities.

I would like to challenge every school nurse to step up to this year's President's Challenge $50 for 50 Years of NASN! Contributing $1 for every year NASN has been serving the needs of students and school nurses.

Monies raised will provide the needed financial boost to conduct research; research that will provide evidence showing the positive impact of school nurses on student outcomes. ALL of your President's Challenge monies go into the NASN Endowment Fund, which is used to support research and NASN special projects. This research will move school nursing forward.

The stories you tell about how you helped a child get the glasses they need to see and learn, helped a family get medications for a child, showed a community that a healthy diet and daily exercise will help improve their lives, provided the necessary personal touch are wonderful. NOW, we need the data to back up our stories!

Help make an impact today by contributing $50 to celebrate 50 Years of NASN and show us you care about student health and learning!

NASN Virtual Hill Day

NASN will be launching it's first Virtual Hill Day, June 12 - 14, 2018 where members will be encouraged to Tweet, Email and Call their Member of Congress in support of the NURSE Act. (We have provided sample tweets, email and talking points.) We are four weeks out and I hope that you will share this widely with your networks and friends so that we get maximum participation.

Screening Rules Update

Hearing Screening- No Changes

Vision Screening- No Changes in requirements. Impact of HB 3157. The gold standard according to the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology for testing for visual acuity in children 6 and older is an approved eye chart. HB 3157 does not require but allows use of photo screening technology as a part of screening process. See Picture below.

If you choose to screen students 6 and older with a photoscreener, you must still screen for visual acuity with a wall chart.

Spinal Screening- Impact of HB 1076

Girls will be screened once at age 10 and again at age 12
Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14

2018-2019 Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Students in Grades K-12

The 2018-2019 Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Students in Grades K-12 are now available.

2018-2019 Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Child-Care Facilities

The 2018-2019 Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements for Child-Care Facilities are now available.

No additional extension to provisional enrollment is planned at this time. After November 1, 2017, students will need to have an up-to-date immunization record or an exemption on file to stay in school. Under Texas Administrative Code, a 30-day provisional enrollment is still allowed in the following situations:

Foster children enrolling in a new school
Active duty military dependents enrolling in a new school
Homeless students enrolling in a new school
Students that have at least one dose of each vaccine required can be provisionally enrolled until the next dose(s) is due.
Students transferring from another school within Texas

If you have questions about provisional enrollment, contact the School Compliance Team at schoolimm@dshs.texas.gov.

If a student meets certain eligibility requirements, s/he is able to participate in the Texas Vaccines for Children program. More information can be found at https://www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/tvfc/

A letter with information on how immunization requirements should be handled for students displaced by Hurricane Harvey, as well as resources available for some of those students is now available.

We want to showcase the ideas and programs that our varied and talented nurses across the state use in their practice at our Annual Conference in November in Plano. LVN abstracts must be co-authored by an RN. See "Poster Presentation - What, Why & How To", attached below.

Power of the Purse

Power of the Purse is TSNO's state conference community fundraiser in which all proceeds will benefit City House.

The mission of City House is to provide emergency shelter and transitional residential services to at-risk children and young adults who are in need due to abuse, neglect or homelessness.

Purse Donation:To make the silent auction process run smoothly, we will be collecting information electronically on your donations. Buy your purse, go to Power of the Purse "Sign up". You will have the opportunity to give a description and value of each purse. Please indicate if you are mailing or bringing to conference your donation.

Please bring your purse for donation to the conference registration desk by Friday, Nov 9th or mail them along with your name, value and description of the purse to:
