We hope you've all had a relaxing summer and are ready for the start of another school year! Throughout the year, we will be sharing informational newsletters with you! • Students will be allowed entry into the High School starting at 7:15 am. To assist in the flow of traffic on campus and throughout the building in the morning we will be using two entrances and exits: Main Entrance and the Concession Stand Entrance

• If you are interested in making a change to your schedule, please reach out to your counselor during a study hall or your lunch period. All add/drops must be made by September 23, 2022.
  
• This year, we will continue to have four lunch periods with everyone eating in the main cafeteria.
  
• School Pictures will be on September 13th and September 14th. Information will be handed out during 1st period.

The Schuylerville Elementary School's Out Program is hiring for after school positions! If you are at least 16 years old, interested in working with children, and are looking for a job, please stop by Student Services for an application. Students must be available to work at least 3 days a week after school. Shifts are available Monday - Friday from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm and 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm. Please contact Mr. Palermo, program coordinator, with questions.

McMahon Thoroughbreds is hiring part-time employees for farm work. After school and weekend hours are available. Contact McMahon Thoroughbreds at (518) 587-3426 for more information.

Registration is now open for a new Driver Education Program at the Myers Education Center in Saratoga Springs. This course is open to all students 16 years or older that will have their NYS Learners Permit by September 26. This 24 hour program is designed to educate students on appropriate driving skills and habits as well as playing a responsible role in the highway transportation/safety system. In addition to classroom instruction, there will be 24 hours of concurrent in-car instruction (6 hours behind the wheel and 18 hours of observation). Please note, under current COVID guidelines in-car instruction will need to be completed by a parent/guardian and follow the curriculum provided weekly. Tuition is $350 per student. Your senior year of high school is here! During the next several months, you'll probably experience a wide range of feelings from excitement to confusion to even a little stress! Please remember, we are here to assist you each step of the way as you navigate through this year and plan for your future. If you have questions about your courses, remaining graduation requirements, diploma type, etc., please be in touch with Mrs. Rust & Mrs. O'Brien. Also, please be aware, we will be meeting with all seniors (parents/guardians are invited to attend as well) in the coming weeks. Letters with your appointment date/time were mailed at the end of August. If you need to make changes to your meeting time, please reach out to your counselor.

Most of the informational sessions will be in-person with the representative from the Office of Admissions coming right into our high school. Working on college applications? Here are a few things to keep in mind!

1. As you're finalizing the schools you will be applying to, be sure to include a "safety school" (one where you meet most if not all of the admission criteria).
2. Double check the admission procedures for your schools. Do they still require SAT/ACT scores?
3. Determine the application procedure you will follow (Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Admission) and determine your application deadline! Please communicate this information with your counselor as soon as it is determined.
4. Supplemental applications may be required (this varies by college/university).
5. What items are generally included in an application?

• Online Application (Common App/SUNY App): install the Common App app to help in this process.
• Transcript: submitted by your counselor to your colleges/universities.
• Official SAT/ACT Scores (if still required by the school): you will send your scores directly from the College Board/ACT to the college/university (you will need our school code - 335140 - for registration).
• Essay: be sure to submit your best work; speak from the heart; write about something that will set you apart from others; make sure you and a teacher proofread your essay.
• Portfolio (varies school to school, as well as by major).
• Letters of Recommendation: one from your counselor; one or two others from a teacher, employer, and/or community member.
• Application Fee (varies school to school): must be submitted in order for your application to be reviewed; see Mrs. Rust or Mrs. O'Brien for questions regarding fee waivers.

Please do not wait until the deadline (or a few days before the deadline) to communicate with Mrs. Rust & Mrs. O'Brien about your application!

Once your Common Application is submitted to your first college/university, the information CANNOT be changed. Make sure you proofread your information. Please feel free to have Mrs. Rust & Mrs. O'Brien review your application before submitting it!!

SAT/ACT Testing Information:

The SAT and the ACT will be offered on the following (Saturday) national testing dates. The cost of the SAT is $55. The ACT has a basic fee of $63.00, with an optional writing test (cost with writing is $88.00). If the cost of these tests presents a hardship, you may be eligible for a fee waiver. Please check with Mrs. Rust, Mrs. O'Brien or Ms. Bean.

For students taking a class through SUNY Adirondack or FMCC:

You recently received information (via mail with your 2022-2023 schedule) with instructions on how to obtain a Certificate of Residency (COR). Once you obtain your COR, it can be given to your teacher or you can bring it to your school counselor in Student Services.

Scholarships

Boston University Trustee Scholarship: eligible applicants rank at the top of their class and are strong leaders in both their school and their community. If interested in applying, students must submit their application for admission to Boston University, along with the Trustee Scholarship essay, by December 1, 2022.

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship: eligible applicants must be a US Citizen; however, they do not need to be related to a member of the Elks; applicants will be judged based on leadership, financial need, and scholarship. Please be sure to use the pulldown box for the association Elks Lodge, which would be Saratoga/Wilton #161. Deadline: November 14, 2022

Elks Legacy Awards: eligible applicants must be a child or grandchild of a living Elk member in good standing; more information can be found online. Deadline: February 6, 2023

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation: this scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school; students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. Deadline: October 31, 2022

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation: scholarships offered to qualified students with demonstrated financial need. Deadline: November 13, 2022
Ron Brown Scholar Program: offers scholarships to African American high school seniors; this scholarship focuses on leadership and civic engagement. Deadline: November 1, 2022 (early), January 9, 2022 (regular)

Heisman High School Scholarship: this scholarship program will recognize the nation's most accomplished and community-minded male and female senior scholar-athletes. If interested in applying, please see flyer below and begin the application here. Deadline: October 18, 2022

Junior Year Planning

With your Junior year underway, you are one step closer to graduation and that inevitable question ... "What will I do with my life?" The first thing to do is begin planning NOW! Your Junior year is the time to brainstorm plans regarding your future (if you haven't already started).

Where should you begin?

• Research careers and/or colleges you are interested in and relate this information to your interests, academic aptitudes, school courses, grades, and any specific talents you may have.
• Meet with college admissions and military representatives who have set up visits with Schuylerville High School this fall (see the schedule of upcoming visits listed above in the senior section; please continue to check your email and the announcements for updates to the list of visits).
• Utilize the internet to access college admission and financial aid information.
• Speak with Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs. Rust, and Ms. Bean to become familiar with the various sources of career, military, and/or college information.

** Please keep in mind that colleges strongly consider your:

- Overall high school academic record and rigor of courses (strength of your schedule)

- GPA (Grade Point Average)

- Class Rank

- SAT/ACT scores (if required)

- Activities, athletics, clubs, and community service

PSAT Information for Juniors

One of the best ways to prepare for the upcoming SAT is by taking the PSAT (Preliminary SAT). Please remember that by taking the PSAT you can:

• Prepare for the upcoming SAT.
• Assess your critical reading, writing, language, and math skills.
• Gain access to Khan Academy, which provides you with free and personalized practice for the SAT.
• Receive specific suggestions on how to improve your academic skills.
• Compete for scholarships (ie: National Merit Scholarship Corporation Competition).
• Get started on the college search process.
