Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary
December 2024
A Note From the Principal's Office
Hello, December!
Can you believe we’re already nearing the halfway point of the school year? It’s been amazing to see how much we’ve grown as a school community—working together with positivity, kindness, and care.
Last month, we focused on Love Your Passengers and saw the difference kindness and support can make. Our students worked hard with their buddy classrooms to complete a community service project of making cards for local nursing homes and senior communities. The cards were welcomed with joy and thankfulness and spread many smiles to people in our community. This month, our Energy Bus rule is Enjoy the Ride. December is a great time to pause, soak in the moments, and find the fun and joy in our everyday lives—even when things get a little busy!
We’re encouraging everyone to focus on what makes them smile and to approach each day with a positive attitude. At home, you can help keep the spirit going by sharing moments of gratitude or having some fun family time. Try asking questions like, “What made you happy today?” or “What made you laugh?” These little conversations go a long way in helping kids (and grown-ups!) stay focused on the good stuff.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Let’s make this month one to remember and keep finding joy in the ride!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Pierson
Thank you to 5N for helping us remember how to Enjoy the Ride!

Gertie Belle Penny War
This year, to honor Veteran's Day, the GBR Student Council sponsored a Penny War fundraiser. All proceeds will be donated to the Midwest Honor Flight! Students were encouraged to bring their pennies and bills to create positive points for their respective classroom buckets. Time was set aside for students to put negative points (silver coins) into the buckets of other classrooms. The Student Council members and advisors then counted the money in each bucket. The total amount of money raised by GBR was $1968.20.
The class which brought in the most points was Miss Uher's 3rd grade! They won a pizza party!
On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, GBR had a visit from a Midwest Honor Flight representative to learn more about the program. At this assembly, GBR presented a check for the money raised from Penny Wars to the foundation!

Caring Kernel Awards
The Caring Kernel Award is given monthly to teacher nominated students who have shown to go above and beyond. Students are chosen for showing kindness to others at school or within the community, showing true Kernel spirit, having a positive attitude, demonstrating great sportsmanship at school activities, and overcoming hardships in school or at home. Below are photos of the student recipients for October 2024 and November 2024!
Thank you to the Kiwanis Club of Mitchell for sponsoring this honor!
Attendance Awards
The Attendance Award is given monthly to the teacher whose students have the best overall attendance! Winning classes get a chance to spin the prize wheel from Mrs. Kapfer. Congratulations to 3/4B for winning in October and ___ for winning in November!
Cold Weather Means Warm Outdoor Gear!
Please remember to send your student(s) to school every day with weather appropriate outdoor gear! This includes coats, hats, mittens, snow pants, and snow boots.
We are seeing a lot of students coming to school with no coats or wearing only hooded sweatshirts. All students are required to go outside for recess - even during cold weather. Students only stay inside for recess when the temperature or "feels like" temperature is zero degrees or BELOW. Let's make sure our students stay warm!
