CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT
Dover Bay is excited to announce that one of our own has done the near-impossible! Rocky Sloan has been named a Loran Scholar! This year, the Loran Scholars Foundation selected 36 exceptional youth from more than 6,000 applicants who have demonstrated service, leadership, dedication to helping others, character, and pursuit of their future paths. Loran Scholars benefit from a four-year, comprehensive leadership-enrichment program, financial support, and a network of peers and mentors—unlike anything else offered in this country. Rocky is off next year to Queens or McMaster University where he will meet other Loran Scholars and begin his education in the medical field. He would like to express his gratitude to all those who have helped him along the way, “especially his incredibly supportive friends: Jane, Christiana, and Eugenie, whom he couldn’t have done it without.” Congratulations Rocky – what an incredible achievement!
PROVINCIAL WINNER - LEGION INTERMEDIATE ESSAY CONTEST

DAY OF SILENCE
April 17, 2025
The Rainbow Alliance is excited to be participating in a Day of Silence pledge this year on April 17th. The event itself has been held in schools since 1996 and has gone through different iterations. GLSEN’s official event is now the “Day of No Silence” in acknowledgement of the need to speak out against inequality. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness and hold space for 2S & LGBTQIA+ people who have been silenced by violence and discrimination. Our Rainbow Alliance has chosen to honour the roots of the Day of Silence by asking students to take a pledge of silence on Thursday, April 17th, but also calling for folks to speak out against discrimination in their daily lives. By hosting this event the Rainbow Alliance hopes to also bring the Dover community together through our common goal of making our school a safe place for everyone.
COURSE SELECTION RE-OPENS
April 22 – 27, 2025
Students will have one final opportunity to change their requested courses for next school year at the end of the month from April 22-27th. The portal will re-open at that time only. Please see Delfina (Secretary) in the office if you need help with logging into your MyEd or your counselor if you have specific questions.
DOVER PARTICIPATES IN STUDENT VOTE 2025
April 25, 2025
Dover Bay is registered to participate in Student Vote Canada, on April 25th. Student Vote is a dynamic learning experience – coordinated by CIVIX and Elections Canada – that empowers students to explore the democratic process by casting ballots for the official local candidates in a parallel election. Dover students, grades 8-12, will join students from more than 6000 other schools across Canada to cast their ballots in our mock federal election. In the coming weeks, students will be encouraged to check out the candidates in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith district, then cast their votes on April 25th!
ELECTIONS CANADA 2025
Monday, April 28, 2025
The Dover Bay gymnasium will be a polling station for the upcoming federal election on Monday, April 28th from 7:00 am to 7:00 p.m. We anticipate that there will be a significant increase in traffic/parking and we ask students to carpool or look at alternative active modes of transportation to and from school that day.
LEARNING UPDATES (REPORT CARDS)
April 30, 2025
Our Quarter 3 Learning Updates (Report Cards) are being published on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025. Families are encouraged to have their child share their core competency self-assessment found in their Google Classroom or shared their child's teacher. In preparation, we are asking for families and students to log in to their MyEd Parent Portal/Student Portal accounts beforehand to ensure a smooth log-in on April 30th.
Families can call the office, come into the school or see the link for troubleshooting tips. Note: in preparation for Learning Updates (Report Cards), the "Transcript" side tab will be disabled from April 11th - 30th, meaning that student grades will not be able to be viewed during that time. If you have any questions or concerns, call 250-756-4595 or email dv-familyportalquestions@sd68.bc.ca.
HONOURING RED DRESS DAY AT DOVER BAY
May 1 - 2, 2025
This year, Dover Bay will honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S+) with school-wide activities on Thursday, May 1st and Friday, May 2nd.
On Thursday, students will engage in grade-specific lessons, including a video and reflection activity for Grade 8s, and new learning opportunities for Grades 9–12 focused on awareness, storytelling, and personal reflection.
On Friday, we will gather as a school community for a special assembly in the gym during A block featuring tsumqwatun, the Salish Sisters, and leadership students from iyus lelum. Afterwards during B-Block, our Grades 10-12 will participate in a march procession, while grades 8-9 tie red ribbons along the school fence in remembrance and solidarity.
Red Dress Day is a powerful reminder of the ongoing impacts of colonial violence, and our recognition of this day is one step in our school’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.
May 5, 2025
May 5, 2025, marks the 15th anniversary of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQIA+ People, also known as Red Dress Day. In Canada, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. The impact of these disproportionately high rates of violence is felt in all areas of life. This day raises awareness about the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people, and serves as a powerful reminder of the need to recognize and address the violence still faced by many in Canada.
Red Dress Day originated from the REDress Project by Métis artist Jaime Black, who created an art installation using red dresses in public spaces The red dress symbolizes the missing and murdered Indigenous women, and the color red was chosen as it is believed to be the only color spirits can see. Hence, it is used as a call to the spirits of these women to return home. The day is marked by individuals and institutions displaying red dresses in public spaces, creating a visual reminder of the Indigenous women who are no longer present.

We will be offering gowns and formal suits through appointments at the closet starting in late February. As usual, appointments are required in advance and can be made by submitting a quick form that is attached to this email.
Prom Closet Nanaimo is also looking for donations. Please visit their FaceBook page or email them for more information.

Sending Student Transcripts to Post-Secondary Schools
Any grade 12 students who have applied for a post-secondary program will need to order and send transcripts using BC’s Student Transcript Services portal. Students will need to create a BCeID as well as connecting the BCeID to the Student Transcript Services account if they haven’t already done so. Most post-secondary institutions in BC, Alberta, and Ontario (via OUAC) require applicants to release electronic (XML) transcripts to them using Student Transcript Services. Check out our “how-to” page on the Dover Counselling Website for detailed instructions or watch these instructional videos to help you navigate the process.

HOMEWORK CLUB
Hello Parents and Guardians,
We are two grade twelve students this year and we have been working to start up an after school homework help for grade 8 and 9 students at Dover. This is a great opportunity for students to come for help with new topics, assignments, projects and come together to share ideas. We are more than happy to help with subjects from math, to science, to languages. We are both excited to collaborate and support grades 8 and 9s because we know that school can be hard so it can be so helpful to receive extra help. We will meet after school every Monday in Lower D wing project room D112A until 3. We would love it if you could inform your kids about this opportunity so we can make sure everyone knows about it. If you have any questions, you can email us at csargent@learn68.ca (mailto:csargent@learn68.ca). or gcavanagh@learn68.ca (mailto: gcavanagh@learn68.ca)
Thank you,
Charlotte and Grace
