Principal's Message
Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break! We are entering into the last part of the school year now and gearing up for the State Testing in May for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Parents please check out the paragraph below with helpful information to help prepare your child to do their best on the state test!
This is an important time of year for all schools in our district to get valuable feedback from parents on the Panorama Survey. The results of the Panorama Survey allow our School Site Council, ELAC, and admin team to address our site needs and develop our School Plan for Student Achievement(SPSA). Parents please take some time this week to complete the survey. The survey opens today, Monday, April 15. The survey should take 15 to 20 minutes to complete, and the survey window closes Friday, April 26. Your responses are anonymous.

At our last Unidos PTO meeting, a few parents raised a concern regarding birthday treats that are being brought in by parents for the monthly birthday celebrations that happen at the end of the month. The district does have a Wellness Policy that encourage nutritious snacks, but is not that specific:
CELEBRATIONS & SPECIAL OCCASIONS Schools shall limit classroom celebrations that involve food during instructional time to no more than once per month, including birthdays, holidays and other celebrations. When possible, classroom celebrations should take place during the last half hour of the school day and adhere to the food allergy and special dietary needs policy. If providing food for celebrations, when possible, healthy foods should be used.
As a staff, we are reviewing our procedures around these celebrations and will have a more specific list of what parents can bring that is nutritional or "healthy" as an alternative to cupcakes or chips prepared for next school year. We will make sure that every parent is aware by having a clear list as part of the MAZE day packet and require a parent signature.
There are two big community events that still need volunteer support coming up in the next two weeks: the 2nd Annual Day of Service/Campus Clean Up Event on April 20th and the Día Del Niño event on Saturday, April 27th. Please read the information below describing both events and sign up to help out!
The students and staff really enjoyed the 123 Andrés and Cristina Assembly. Andrés and Cristina always bring high energy, great children's music en Español, and the important message of being proud of being bilingual. This past year they were honored with a Grammy!! Enjoy this clip of the maestras dancing in front of the students with Andrés y Cristina: Maestras with Andrés y Cristina
Annual Science Fair and Family STEAM Night!
Science Fair and STEAM Night Success!
We had a very successful Science Fair with over 200 students presenting their Science projects to the judges. Thanks to local sponsors Bristol-Myers Squibb and Gilead Sciences for their support in providing Science Fair kit projects to all interested students! Additionally, all participating students received a free pass to local museums (Tech Museum and Exploratorium). THANK YOU and SHOUT OUT to parent volunteer Anuj Gaggar for his leadership and follow through in helping make this event so successful. Anuj is looking for a new parent volunteer to take on the leadership role of the Science Fair for next year as he no longer has children at Adelante Selby. Please email/contact Director Warren if you are interested in helping us out.
We also want to Thank all of the parent and community volunteers and David Hopper (our STEAM teacher) for a memorable and successful Family STEAM night. There were a LOT of hands on activities to keep everyone engaged and also stimulated the students thinking about STEAM!
CASSPP State Testing 3rd-5th Grades: Reminder Do Your Best On The Test!
CASSPP State Testing 3rd-5th Grades: Reminder Do Your Best On The Test!
CAASPP & CST: Testing Window May 6th-May 17th
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP): This test is for English Language Arts and Math. It also includes a Performance Task for both ELA and Math. Additionally, the 5th Grade is the only grade level that takes the California Science Test (CST) and the Physical Fitness test (both of which are part of the CAASPP).
It is important for all RCSD students to participate in these state assessments as results provide valuable information about each student’s academic progress. In addition, the number of students participating is used to determine school funding. Results are also used to assess the quality of RCSD schools, could determine statewide and national rankings, impact state accountability reports including college and career readiness measures.

Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
Child Nutrition Services: Breakfast and Lunch Menus
A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.
