Hazel Dell Holiday Service Project
As we enter into the season of giving, Hazel Dell has once again chosen to donate items to a school in Central Indiana. This is the second year that we will be changing the traditional book exchange into an optional service project. If you are interested in donating items, we will be collecting markers, crayons, colored pencils, scissors, rulers, pencils, kleenex, dry erase markers, and pencil boxes. (They have plenty of notebooks and notebook paper.) Please do NOT wrap the donated items. They will be boxed and delivered to the school w/ love from the HD school community!

Language Arts
The students have recently completed the novel, Trouble River. They enjoyed this book and learned more about deciding the theme of what they read. The students did well in sighting examples when responding to the novel. As you should know, the students are now assigned to use their engineering skills to create a raft that will hold weight without sinking. Raft sketches and rafts themselves should be completed and brought to school by Friday, December 11. Please contact me, if you have any questions about this project.
The students are now reading some holiday selections and are responding to these with evidence from the text as well as learning more about the figurative language within literature.
Math
We are now working on the process of division with partial-quotients. This can be a very difficult math skill and it is extremely important that the students have their basic multiplication facts memorized. Be sure you are having the students practice their facts with flash cards as often as possible. We will also be working on the traditional method of division (the method us adults learned). Please be sure to look over your student's graded papers as they come home. It is a great idea to go over your child's work and missed problems with him or her.
Project Lead the Way
Below are some photos from our PLTW Module 1: Energy and Collisions. The students worked in small groups to create a vehicle restraint system to protect their egg "passenger" in a collision.
