March is Women’s History Month
As we enter the month of March, we have the wonderful opportunity to celebrate Women’s History Month. This month serves as a time to honor the contributions, achievements, and legacies of women throughout history and in our present day. Women's History Month originated from Women's History Week, which was first established in 1981 by Congress. In 1987, this week was expanded to a month-long celebration, officially recognizing the vital role women have played in shaping our society, culture, and world. Here in the Brighton Central School District, we are committed to fostering an environment of inclusivity and appreciation for all individuals. It is important for our students to learn about and recognize the accomplishments of women from diverse backgrounds and fields.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, check out some local events and learning opportunities:
- The National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House in Rochester, New York, features the National Historic Landmark home of the legendary civil rights leader, and the site of her famous arrest for voting in 1872. This home was the headquarters of the National American Woman Suffrage Association when she was its president. This is also where she died in 1906 at age 86, following her “Failure is Impossible” speech in Baltimore. The Anthony Museum offers guided tours of the Susan B. Anthony House six days a week, from 11 am- 5pm.
- Rochester Museum and Science Center International Women’s Day Celebration. Celebrate Women’s HERStory! Learn about Rochester’s Changemakers, explore hands-on activities, and meet inspiring female scientists.
- PBS kids video on Women’s History that celebrates women all around the world.
- Online exhibit at the Smithsonian called Becoming Visible: Bringing American Women’s History into Focus. Explore five women's stories and learn what you can do to continue to celebrate women.

BHS Say Yes to the Dress Helps Students Find Prom Attire
The 10th annual BHS-Say Yes to the Dress event helped Brighton High School students find free prom attire in February. Over 100 students took home a suit or dress and even more took home other items (casual clothing, shoes, purses, ties, socks, and jewelry). There was no charge for any of the available items.
Brighton High School and Brighton Your Wardrobe collaborated on the event. Prom attire came in from Brighton Your Wardrobe’s community donation drive. Volunteers helped students make selections. If alterations were needed, three volunteer seamstresses were on site to make the necessary adjustments and had them ready for the students by the end of the school day. Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a great success, including our community partners Leary’s Cleaners and Incognito Menswear and Tux Shop. We look forward to next year's event and will continue to accept prom clothing donations in the lobby of Central Office.

LINEWIZE and how families can monitor their student’s browsing history
As part of our commitment to your child’s online safety, our school has partnered with Qustodio, the world’s leading provider of online safety solutions. As devices play an increasing role in children’s education it is crucial that we put safeguards in place. Your child already benefits from internet filtering technology which blocks inappropriate web content on their school-owned device while at school. We are going one step further and granting every parent a free Qustodio Parental App account. Qustodio will give you important insights into your child’s online activity on their school device.
A representative from Linewize will be presenting this app at our next PTSA meeting and explaining how parents can use this to have greater control over the school-issued device at home and two other personal devices.
