May Matters: Celebrating Diversity, Resilience, and Excellence
May offers us the opportunity to honor the diversity, resilience, and excellence of our students, staff, and community – with events like Teacher Appreciation Week, National School Nurse Day, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, and more! These celebrations and others remind us of the wide range of experiences within our community. As we honor these occasions, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all.
Don't Miss...
Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Month
Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Month is dedicated to celebrating the diverse cultural traditions and contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) in the United States. This month-long celebration honors the rich heritage and histories of these communities and highlights their resilience and the invaluable impact they’ve had on the fabric of American society. AANHPI Month encourages dialogue, fosters understanding, and promotes cultural appreciation among people of all backgrounds.
According to the US census (which often undercounts populations of color and those that identify as multiracial), roughly 20.6 million people in the US identify as Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. While it's impossible to encompass the full spectrum of "Asian" heritage, AANHPI Month provides a valuable chance to explore the myriad of cultures and communities.

In Case You Missed It: MESD Diversity Campaign
Program & Department Highlights
Ridwell and Outdoor School
Ridwell and Outdoor School are teaming up! In July, Outdoor School will be a featured category for a Ridwell pick-up, allowing folks in the Ridwell Community to donate items to the program. Proud to be a part of the MESD, Outdoor School has been building community and teaching science outdoors since 1966. We bring sixth-grade students out of the classroom for a week and into the woods to experience hands-on environmental science, learning from teachers, counselors, and from an extensive network of dedicated high school volunteers who lead cabins and teach on field study.
What kinds of donations are needed?
We are looking for clothes and outdoor gear that fit all sizes of humans. Everyone who participates in Outdoor School deserves to have access to gear that will make them feel comfortable while learning and playing outside. Your donations will ensure that no sixth-grade student or high school student leader will be cold, wet, or feel left out while at Outdoor School.
Not a Ridwell member? You can still donate to our Gear Library!
We have also been running a Gear Library for families and students to come and borrow any gear they might need during their week at Outdoor School. There has been a very strong response to our Sunday Gear Library Days so far, with lots of sleeping bags and warm coats headed out to our Outdoor School sites with students. We are looking forward to getting as many warm layers, boots, sleeping bags, hats, and raincoats into the hands of students as possible!
If you want to donate, have questions, or want to learn more – swing by the Outdoor School office on the main floor!
Arata & Burlingame Creek Schools - The Outdoor School Experience
By Kim Richmond, Arata Creek School, Special Education/Case Manager
Last year, our mission was clear: make Outdoor School (ODS) a reality for 7th graders from Arata and Burlingame Creek schools. It took research, proposals, and teamwork. With Principal Timothy Rodgers' support and advocacy with Lyon Benno, Regional Coordinator of Extension Service Outdoor School, our vision expanded to include all three Creek schools.
Securing funding was just the start. Challenges arose, but with Noa Martinsen and Andrea Hussey on board, we persevered. Thanks to meticulous planning, a grant was secured, funding 24 students for the ODS adventure.
As the experience unfolded, it was evident our collective efforts paid off. Witnessing our students thrive and find joy in ODS was heartwarming. This success underscores the power of collaboration in education. Let's continue to unite for enriching experiences that transcend classrooms, shaping brighter futures together.
HR Update
Did you know Oregon ranks near the top in most studies of paid family and medical leave options in the country? The expansion of these programs has not come without challenges. The frequent changes in law, overlapping options, and 3rd-party providers has created confusion and frustration.
We are committed to making sure you get accurate, responsive information. MESD Human Resources is working hard to integrate the frequent legal changes, advocate for improved service from our providers, and ensure a quick response. As the MESD Benefits and Leave Specialist, Diana Shukri is at the forefront of this work.
Diana Shukri has seven years of Human Resources and Administrative experience under her belt, including a Human Resources department at an early childhood education company, policy and administrative work in insurance and finance, and now as a Benefits and Leaves Specialist with MESD.
She was born and raised in Portland, OR. As the youngest daughter of two immigrant parents from the Middle East, she learned at a young age that hard work, integrity and determination are major key factors to achieving success. She was a double Business Major at Portland State University and earned her Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration with a focus in Business Management and Human Resources Management.
She became inspired in Business and Education at an early age. "I was always surrounded by hard working people. My grandfather was an Administrator at a school before he immigrated to America. He valued education more than anything. This has continued to stay with me.''
Her work at MESD fosters a need to assist and advise our employees in all facets regarding Benefits and Leaves. "I am incredibly optimistic about MESD's growth and my own growth here."
MESD Strong!
Celebrating MESD Teachers and School Nurses
In honor of Teacher Appreciation week and School Nurse Appreciation week, we are delighted to present the following Board Proclamations that highlight their invaluable contributions to our school district. Both were publicly adopted at our last board meeting. Please join us in expressing our gratitude for their commitment and unwavering dedication to all of our students.
May Events and Celebrations
Mental Health Awareness Month
Mental Health Awareness Month is a time for us to recognize and reflect on the importance of mental well-being and emotional resilience as well as acknowledge the effects of mental strain on our day-to-day life. Taking care of yourself and your well-being is pivotal to being able to care for others, a fact that is often overlooked and especially challenging in education and in direct service. Let’s remember that kindness and empathy (to ourselves as well as others!) are essential tools in promoting positive mental health in our communities. Together, we can break down the barriers of stigma and create a supportive environment that encourages healing, growth, and understanding for all.
