Announcements and Reminders
GCPS schools and offices will be closed on MLK Day— Monday, January 20— with students and staff returning to class on Tuesday, January 21.
The birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is observed as a national holiday each year on the third Monday in January. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
The commemoration of #MLKDay as a Day of Service is a call to act on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as we work together to make our communities more equitable, build bridges, lead with empathy to address social issues, and commit to being of service to each other.
Make Monday a day on, not a day off. Click here to learn more, and to find links for service opportunities: https://americorps.gov/newsroom/events/mlk-day
Important Reminder: Chromebooks and Chromebook Chargers
Each day Seckinger students are expected to bring their fully charged Chromebook to use during their learning activities and to complete assignments/assessments.
Chromebooks and Chromebook chargers will no longer be available for a student checkout for the day. If a student forgets their Chromebook or charger, they need to call their parents and have them bring these items to the attendance office, located at the back of the building.
How your student can prepare for test taking—and what you can do to help
A student who is well rested and well fed and has a positive attitude about testing is best prepared for testing. You can help your student do his or her best by considering these tips:
- Make sure that your student is in school and on time on test days.
- Make sure your student gets a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast before each day of testing.
- Emphasize that you have confidence in his or her ability to do the best job possible.
- Remind your student to listen to the directions and read each question carefully during testing.
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Mrs. Hall and her Ecology classes who received a grant from the Space Grant Consortium to support all students competing in the Plant the Moon Challenge. This is an international science investigation competition in which students will receive a lunar regolith simulant that is the same composition as what is found on the moon's surface and investigate what additions must be made to grow food crops on the moon. Students have the opportunity to be honored through awards and to have their research used by NASA as they plan future missions to the moon.
Advanced Placement Recognition
On Thursday January 9th, we recognized 88 students who showed AP potential. We discussed AP courses and registration. These students were identified through our partnership with Equal Opportunity Schools (EOS) student survey and October PSAT + AP Potential tool as having the potential to take at least one or more advanced placement courses next year.
Congratulations to the Seckinger Cluster! All schools in the cluster received a 100 on both health inspections from first semester! Shoutout to Ms. Delmy Kilroy and her incredible team for their exceptional work. This is a fantastic accomplishment!
Inclement Weather Procedures
As we enter the winter season, it is important to know what to expect from GCPS in case of inclement weather.
If weather conditions pose a potential safety concern, the decision to cancel school or delay opening might be made. It is more likely for school to be canceled in the early morning - due to dangerous road conditions that formed overnight - than for school to let out early because bad weather is moving in.
If bad weather causes school to be canceled or dismissed early, public announcements will be made on GCPS TV, on the school system's website (www.gcpsk12.org), on Twitter and Facebook, through Parent Square, and via metro-Atlanta radio and television stations. Full-day cancellations usually are announced by 6:00 AM. GCPS TV can be found on the following Gwinnett County cable channels:
- Charter - Channel 180
- Comcast - Channel 24 or 26 (depending on location)
- Visit us on our GCPS TV app on Apple, Android, Amazon Fire, and Roku devices or view the live stream at GCPSTV.org
