Principal's Note
A Note From Principal Danielson
Dear Families and Friends,
As we step into the beautiful month of October, I am excited to share several important initiatives and themes that we will be focusing on at our school. October is not only a month of vibrant fall colors and cooler temperatures but also a time to emphasize critical values and goals that contribute to our students' growth and well-being.
Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and our school is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students. Throughout the month, we will be engaging in various activities and discussions aimed at raising awareness about bullying and promoting kindness. Our goal is to empower students to stand up against bullying and to always choose kindness. We encourage families to talk with their children about the importance of treating others with respect and compassion. Together, we can make our school a place where every student feels safe and valued.
Emphasizing Kindness
Kindness is a cornerstone of our school community. This month, we will be highlighting the importance of being kind in our daily interactions. Acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on others. We will be recognizing students who demonstrate exceptional kindness and encouraging everyone to practice empathy and understanding. Let's all strive to make kindness a habit that extends beyond October and becomes an integral part of who we are.
October is College Month in Michigan
In addition to our focus on bullying prevention and kindness, October is also College Month in Michigan. This is a great opportunity for our students to start thinking about their futures and exploring the possibilities that higher education can offer. We will be providing information and activities to help students learn about different colleges, the application process, and the importance of setting academic and career goals. Parents, we encourage you to have conversations with your children about their aspirations and the steps they can take to achieve them.
The Importance of Attendance: "Showing Up is Job #1"
Finally, I want to stress the importance of regular attendance. "Showing up is job #1" is a motto we stand by because consistent attendance is crucial for academic success. Every day of learning counts, and being present in school helps students keep up with their studies, participate in class activities, and develop good habits that will serve them throughout their lives. We understand that there are times when absences are unavoidable, but we ask for your support in ensuring that your child attends school regularly.
Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child's education. Together, we can make October a month of learning, growth, and positive change. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Danielson

Una nota de la directora Danielson
Queridas familias y amigos,
Sra. Danielson

A Chance to meet Thomas Valles!!
This week, our students had the incredible opportunity to hear from Thomas Valles, one of the 1987 state champion cross country runners featured in the Disney movie “McFarland USA.”
He shared inspiring stories about the making of the movie, the importance of setting goals, and overcoming obstacles. It was a truly motivational experience for our students, reminding them of the power of perseverance and dedication. Thank you, Thomas, for inspiring the next generation! #Inspiration #GoalSetting #OvercomingObstacles #McFarlandUSA

Dear SMS Families,
Understanding and Preventing Bullying in Middle School: A Guide for Parents
As your child transitions into middle school, they encounter a myriad of new experiences, challenges, and social dynamics. Among these challenges, bullying remains a significant concern that can have lasting impacts on emotional and academic well-being. Understanding bullying and actively participating in prevention can make a world of difference for your child and their peers, helping to set the foundation for an enjoyable academic experience.
What Is Bullying?
Bullying is repeated, intentional, aggressive behavior that forces an imbalance of power. It can manifest in various forms, including:
- Physical Bullying: Hitting, kicking, or any other form of physical aggression.
- Verbal Bullying: Name-calling, teasing, or making threats.
- Social or Relational Bullying: Excluding or telling others to exclude someone from a group, spreading rumors/gossiping, or public humiliation.
- Cyberbullying: Using digital platforms to harass or intimidate, such as through social media, texts, or emails.
Understanding these types can help you recognize signs of bullying in your child’s life or behavior.
Signs Your Child May Be Involved in Bullying
Whether your child is being bullied or is a bystander, it’s essential to look for signs of distress. Some indicators include:
- Sudden changes in behavior or mood
- Withdrawal from friends and activities
- Unexplained injuries or lost possessions
- Reluctance to go to school or participate in social events
- Declining academic performance
- Changes in sleeping or eating patterns
Open Communication: The Key to Prevention
Creating an open dialogue about bullying can empower your child to share their experiences and feelings. Here are some strategies to facilitate this communication:
Ask Open-Ended Questions: Encourage your child to express themselves by asking questions like, “What was a good thing that happened today?” or “What’s happening with your friends at school?”
Listen Without Judgment: If your child opens up about bullying, listen empathetically. Avoid jumping to conclusions or dismissing their feelings.
Share Your Own Experiences: Relating personal stories about your own school experiences can help your child feel understood and more comfortable sharing.
Educate on Empathy: Teach your child the importance of empathy and standing up for others. Discuss how they would feel in someone else's shoes.
Encouraging Positive Friendships
Fostering healthy relationships is essential for your child’s social development. Help your child:
- Engage in Group Activities: Encourage participation in clubs, sports, or community programs where they can meet new friends and build confidence.
- Develop Social Skills: Role-playing social situations can help your child navigate friendships and conflicts more effectively.
- Recognize Healthy Friendships: Discuss the qualities of a good friend and the importance of mutual respect.
Collaborating with Schools
Partnerships between parents and schools are crucial in addressing bullying. Here’s how to get involved:
Know the School’s Policy: Familiarize yourself with your school’s anti-bullying policy and procedures. Most schools have resources and programs in place to tackle bullying.
Attend Workshops or Meetings: Engage in school-sponsored workshops or informational sessions about bullying prevention.
Report Bullying: If you suspect bullying is occurring, report it to school officials, and the sooner, the better. Providing details can help them investigate and take action.
Empowering Your Child
Teach your child strategies to respond to bullying, whether they are directly involved or witnessing it. These strategies include:
- Staying Calm: Encourage them to remain composed and not to retaliate.
- Walking Away: Sometimes, the best response is to simply disengage from the situation.
- Seeking Help: Reinforce the importance of asking adults for help, whether it’s a teacher, school counselor, or you.
Resources for Support
If your child is experiencing bullying or you need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to the following resources:
Okay2Say: A confidential tip line where students can report bullying and other concerns. You can contact Okay2Say at 1-855-565-2729 or visit their website at Okay2Say for more information.

Conclusion
At Shelby Middle School, bullying is taken very seriously, and we want to provide as safe of an environment as possible while your child navigates the complexities of middle school. Your role as a parent in bullying prevention is vital, as well. By fostering open communication, promoting healthy friendships, and collaborating with schools, you can help create a safer and more supportive environment for all students.

Hard Working Students in our Historical Fiction and Cinema Class
Attendance is Important!
Students who are chronically absent or receiving Fs in the middle grades are at very high risk of being off-track for graduation in ninth grade, and eventually dropping out of school
School Attendance Policy
It is imperative that students be in attendance each school day in order not to miss a significant portion of their education. Important learning result from active participation in classroom and other school activities which cannot be replaced by individual study.
Attendance is important in the development of a high-quality work ethic which will be a significant factor in a student’s success with future employers. One of the most important work habits that employers look for in hiring and promoting a worker is his or her dependability in coming to work every day and on time. This is a habit the school wants to help students develop as early as possible in their school careers.
ADE, or Absence Doctor’s Excused with proper medical documentation are the only verifiable absences.
Verifiable absences are only those documented by a physician, dentist, counselor or other health professional, or funeral as determined by the building principal. Unverifiable absences are any other absences including those that are prearranged. *** It is important that parents/guardians understand that notes from home or call-in’s will not be counted as verifiable absences.
5 days absent = Letter from the school regarding absences
10 days absent = 10 Day Truancy letter from school and meeting with student
10+ days absent = Possible Referral to Truancy Officer
What the research says....
Absenteeism in middle and high school can predict dropout rates. As early as 6th grade, absenteeism becomes an indicator that a student will drop out, Johns Hopkins University research shows. Other early warning signs include poor grades in core courses and behavior leading to suspensions. A statewide study in Utah found that a student who is chronically absent in any year between 8th and 12th grade is 7.4 times more likely to drop out.
Just a reminder...We are an away for the day school!
Cell phones, ear buds etc. are not to be in class.
