Class Curriculum
Unit 5 - Fix-up Strategies: Making Reading Look Right, Sound Right, and Make Sense.
This unit, Fix-Up Strategies: Making Reading Look Right, Sound Right, and Make Sense, builds upon skills and strategies from the Word-Solving Strategies unit. Its primary goal is to build independent readers who are able to read more challenging texts using a variety to strategies to read tricky words and also monitor for meaning. Students’ MOY running records and observations will provide information on how students already problem solve unknown words through meaning, structure, and visual cues, read fluently, and make meaning of text.
-This week we are having fun with homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings; knight/ night, hour/our. We will also be working on building our fluency as readers to support comprehension.
Writer's Workshop
Unit 3: Writing Reviews
This unit, Writing Reviews, requires students to state their opinion and support their thoughts with words and drawings in order to persuade others about a specific topic. Students will provide a reason for their opinion and details that are based on personal experiences. Students will show evidence of persuasive writing by creating a book review to share with a writing partner.
-This will be our final week with writing reviews and we are returning to some of the kids favorite things about this unit. They enjoyed writing the best and worst of and will have freedom to choose their own topic. In addition, we will integrate technology and children will be able to award ribbons/ compliments to each author.
Math Workshop
Unit 5: Problem Solving: All Problems
In this unit, students will solve addition and subtraction problems within 20.. Strategies should be taught within a context. Teachers may read the word problems to students orally. This unit lays the foundation for solving all types of real world problem.
-This is our final week of this unit. This week we continue to work on start unknown word problems as well as addend unknown. We will also be reviewing our 'friends of ten', to support our math fluency.
Social Studies
Economics
In this unit, students will learn about services in the home, school and community. They will also learn how supply and demand affect family and community decisions.
