September Design Principle: Success and Failure

Hello Glennwood Families,
Thank you to all the parents who attended Curriculum Night last Thursday. I know that you were eager to hear more about your child's learning path for this school year. One of the reasons our students SOAR at Glennwood is because of the strong partner relationships with our families.
Next week will be our first School Leadership Team (SLT) meeting of the school year on Wednesday, September 11 from 4:00-5:00 pm. These meetings are held virtually, and parents are always welcomed to attend. Here is the link if you wish to join us.
The STAR Reading and Math Assessment Diagnostic reports will be in your child’s communication folder today. It is a lot of information. Please let us know if you have any questions. Fall conferences will come up soon, and that will also be a great opportunity to talk with your child's teacher about the STAR reports. Please be on the lookout next week for more information from your child's teacher.
If you have questions about the letters in your child's folder and want to learn more about the (MTSS) Multi-tiered System of Support, there is an informational webinar on September 11th at 6 p.m. Log on to hear more from our district leaders from the Teaching and Learning Department. You can also discuss this with your teacher during the fall conference.
Warmest regards,
Holly Brookins, Ph.D.
Principal
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester the Gifted Review Team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it into the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Glennwood Elementary is Susanna Shewan. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact Ms. Shewan at sshewan@csdecatur.net or visit the Gifted and Talented Services webpage.
News from School Counselor
Hello! My name is Ms. Parker. I am Glennwood Elementary's school counseling intern this year! I will be working under the supervision of Mr. Blase to support your students and make this a great school year! I grew up in Rockdale County and, like Mr. Blase, my mother is also a teacher. I graduated with my B.A in Psychology and a minor in theater from Berry College in 2020. I then worked as a learning coach, tutor, online English teacher, substitute teacher, Special Ed paraprofessional, and finally, Pre-K co-teacher. I am currently getting my M.Ed in School Counseling at Georgia State University and will be graduating in May 2025. I am honored to work with CSD and Mr. Blase at Glennwood Elementary for my internship this school year!
Calling all Second Grade Families – Help Host the Staff Appreciation Fall Treat & Snack Table
For September, we're asking second grade families to host a "Fall Treat and Snack Table" for our staff on Wednesday, September 18th. Some of these items will be used to help restock the teacher lounge. If you're a second grade family, please SIGN UP HERE to bring in something for our staff. Please drop off your items with Ms. Reynolds at the front office September 16-17th anytime during school hours and the PTA will assemble the snack table for our staff to enjoy on September 18th. We are requesting clean up volunteers, so please sign up if you can volunteer your time to help clean up.
If you are unable to purchase items for the table, but would like to donate funds towards the event or to restock snacks in the teacher lounge, the PTA is also collecting monetary donations. Donations can be made here with a note that it is for the September Snack Table and we'll take care of it for you. If you have any questions, please reach out to Staff Appreciation Co-Chairs: Samantha Bryan or Hui-Chuan Hodges (staffappreciation@glennwoodespta.com). Thank you!
YEARBOOK PHOTOS NEEDED!
As you capture pics of special moments at Community Circle, the Fall Carnival, Book Character Parade, Walk & Roll, or other Glennwood events – we’d love to include those memories in the yearbook!
If interested in being included, please submit your photos by emailing image files to yearbook@glennwoodespta.com. Thank you for helping us compile this year’s story for the Glennwood community!
First Walk & Roll of the year is Sept 6th!
Get ready for a thrilling year of Walk & Roll at Glennwood! We're on the hunt for parent superheroes to lead our three "Walking School Buses" for our monthly Walk & Roll dates. Whether you're up for a stroll or a roll, join in the excitement with other families. Can't make it? No sweat! Drop your child at one of our stops, and our fantastic volunteers will walk them to school.
Parents, lace up your shoes and become our Walking School Bus leaders, with two heroes needed for each route every month. You can sign up to lead the charge regularly or be a backup for when duty calls. It's a small commitment with big community rewards and a healthy dose of fun on our Walk & Roll days. Join the march towards a healthier community and have a blast while you're at it! (NO WALKING SCHOOL BUS FOR FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6!)
Reach out to Matt Mayheu at srts@glennwoodespta.com or 678-593-8001 with any questions!
