Mr. Mauck's Musings
Before I begin this week it is appropriate to recognize one of the best educators in Indiana. Dr. Tracy will be leaving GJCS to help guide the education of every student in the State of Indiana. We were all fortunate to have Dr. Lorey's guidance and leadership for most of her career. If you get the opportunity please take a moment and thank her for her dedication. Good luck Dr. Lorey as you move on to fulfill the last of your professional goals. Good luck.
Welcome back to a full week of school after a few extra days curtesy of the winter weather. The Indiana Association of School Principals recognizes Rising Stars of Indiana for outstanding academic achievement. Jasper High School is proud of our four juniors receiving this honor. Congratulations to Molly Kramer, Johnson Dong, Kaiden Schmidt, and Caroline Schipp who were all awarded the Rising Star distinction. The JHS chapter of the National Honors Society inducted a new class of scholars who exhibit excellent character, leadership, and service. Luke Popp qualified for the Indiana FFA State welding competition on Saturday, January 18th at the J Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis. Congratulations to all of our students who have been recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom. This week Ms. Amaya Cruz and Mr. Ross Polen were selected as our Student and Staff of the Week for their outstanding support of Jasper High School.
Emily Pineda is representing JHS at the Girls Wrestling State Tournament today. We wish Emily luck as she grapples for a state title. The JHS Boys and Girls Bowling teams secured Sectional titles and will compete at Regional on the 25th. Individual finisher are: Jaxson Werner Jasper 1st, Eli Clark Jasper 3rd, Kaleb Wendholt Jasper 4th, Todd Dick Jasper 5th, Greta Weisheit Jasper 1st, and Joslyn Mehringer Jasper 2nd. Great job and good luck next weekend.
On January 27th Officer David Gomez will speak with our students on the dangers of social media. Topics will include the dangers of talking with strangers online, Issues with sending nude photos (Sextortion), online scams and what to do if you are caught in an online scam, bullying, and making the right choices in your high school career. He will also have a community presentation that evening. The Spanish Presentation is at 5:00PM and the English Presentation is at 6:30PM in the VUJ CTIM Building. Thank you to Crisis Connection and the Rotary Club for sponsoring Officer Gomez.
Seniors and parents time is running our to purchase graduation gear, caps, gowns, and announcements. Please see the message by Jostens to purchase your items if you have not already. Seniors also need to submit their yearbook photos and parents have the option to purchase Senior Ads. Prom sign-ups are available and due by March 21st. All Seniors and their parents are encouraged to complete the FAFSA. State law requires parents complete the form or formally opt out with their students' school as a graduation requirement. Mrs. Cobo requested we share the date for the GJCS Bilingual Spring Admissions and Financial Aid Night on Wednesday Jan. 29th at 6:00 in the VUJ CTIM Building. This is a great opportunity to learn about college admissions and the ability to obtain financial aid.
Next week the Student Academic Services Department will begin meeting with students about class schedules for next year. Take a look at the presentations and the course offerings for your students and discuss their options. Mr. Uebelhor and Mr. Jochum will have office hours if you have any questions. Information is below. StuCo is back in action with an intriguing Homecoming theme of Board Games. We will have hall decorations, dress up days and games all week. Pictures and activities are listed below. Mrs. Johnson held the first Conversational Spanish meeting today during homeroom. Students attended and worked on their abilities to converse in Spanish. Attention all robotics enthusiasts, the Thundercat's robotics club is having call outs on Monday evening at 6. Arrive at door 15 and check out the challenges and robots.
We have a few announcements from our community. All the details are located in the community events section. The Girls On The Run is looking for Junior coaches. Several girls participated last year and had a great experience. Parents Supporting Education Jasper is hosting several contests and events for Martin Luther King Day. Print off your coloring sheets or attend their events in celebration of Dr. King. Finally there will be a Miss Shamrock Pageant meeting for those interested in participating in the pageant. Registration forms are included below.
The Athletic department wanted me to let you know the 2025 moratorium weeks will be June 30th-July 6th and July 25th-July 31st. The last week is a change from information previously posted. Finally to keep our students safe before and after school parents need to drop-off and pick students in the appropriate places. The morning drop-off is on the North side of the building at door 17. Students are not to be dropped off at the main entrance, athletic entrance or door 9. The parents who are doing so greatly disrupt the flow of traffic. In the afternoons students should be picked up in the East tennis parking lot. Do not pick up students in the Health Pointe parking lot or the JHS South athletic/student lot. Thank you for adhering to proper traffic patterns to keep our students safe. Have a wonderful weekend and Go Cats!

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid site is now open for Students and Parents to complete their applications for next year. Any student considering attending college should complete the FAFSA to be eligible for financial assistance. I would encourage all families to fill out a application regardless of need as many colleges require FAFSA completion for all types of assistance. Many schools require submission for competitive non-need based scholarships or grants. The application is much easier than in the past. Click on the link for more information and to complete your application. FAFSA

Prom Sign-up Information
The 2025 prom forms are now available outside the attendance window. The JHS 2025 prom is Saturday, April 5th from 8--11 at the Klubhaus in Jasper. All students who plan to attend prom MUST fill out & turn in a form by Friday, March 21st. All prom dues MUST be paid in full by Friday, March 21st. If a student plans to bring a student who is not currently a JHS junior or senior, then a prom guest verification form MUST be filled out by that student's high school, college, and/or workplace supervisor. The prom guest verification forms are also due by Friday, March 21st.
JHS seniors do not owe prom dues. The only fee seniors might pay would be the $10 guest fee if a senior brings a guest who is not currently a JHS junior or senior.
JHS juniors do owe prom dues, $40 per prom fundraiser. The first fundraiser was the online store (juniors had to sell $70 worth of merchandise, at minimum). If a junior did not sell anything, that student will be charged $40 for prom dues for that fundraiser. The other fundraiser involves concessions at the boys' basketball games. If a student did not work concessions for one of the games, that student will be charged $40 for that fundraiser. Juniors who did not participate in the fundraisers will owe $80 to attend prom. If juniors bring a guest who is not currently a JHS junior or senior, the $10 guest fee also applies and is in addition to prom dues. All checks for prom dues should be made payable to: JHS Class of 2026.
Prom dues and/or money can be dropped off in Room 202 to Mrs. Keusch. Please do not interrupt classes. Drop off forms and money during passing periods or during homeroom.

Girls on the Run Junior Coaches needed.
Last year I had such great success with several Jasper High School girls volunteering to serve as Junior Coaches for Girls on the Run. Would you mind sharing this information again with your female students (age 16 and older)? We need coaches at both Jasper Elementary and Ireland Elementary. We have coaches at Holy Trinity, however, could always use support there as well. Our season starts the week of February 24th. I appreciate your help!
Junior Coach:
Roles & Responsibilities Junior Coach Overview: Serving as a Junior Coach is a fun and rewarding way for 16 to 18 year old high school girls to get involved with Girls on the Run, grow their leadership skills and make a difference in the lives of girls throughout their community. As a junior coach you get to
1) participate in a program that provides training, experience, and service credits,
2) impact younger girls, and
3) be part of a positive community!
Role Summary:
The Junior Coach is a volunteer position for high school girls to deliver Girls on the Run programs with a team of coaches at a program site. Junior Coaches serve a similar role as adult coaches, with the added support of a Mentor Coach to develop new skills, grow in their ability to build relationships with participants, and guide a full lesson within the curriculum. The outline of roles and responsibilities below further details the Junior Coach opportunity.
Qualifications To be eligible to participate in the Junior Coach program, potential applicants must:
• Be 16-18 years of age (in high school)
• Commit 1.5-3 hours of time each week for 8 weeks
