Superintendent's Message
October 30, 2024
Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:
Thank you to all of the parents, family members, teachers, and community members who participated in last week’s Newport Public Schools virtual town hall meeting. I enjoyed discussing important topics impacting our schools including attendance, RICAS and SAT scores, and our new strategic plan. In case you missed the town hall meeting, you can see the presentation I delivered here along with answers to questions we received from parents and teachers.
Next Tuesday, November 5th is Election Day. We want to encourage everyone to have your voice heard and vote. Voting is the core act of our democracy and the foundation of our city, state, and national governments. You are allowed to bring your child to vote at your polling location. What a great way to show them the process and importance of voting.
Regardless of the outcomes of any and all elections, Newport Public Schools will continue our mission of providing a safe and welcoming environment for student learning and growth. We want our children to thrive, reach for the stars, and know that anything is possible-especially with a good education. That is something no one can ever take away from an individual. So let’s keep education a top priority!
November 5th is also parent/family conference day. Please take advantage of this time from 12:00-5:00 PM at each of our schools to meet your child's teachers and learn more about how you as a parent/family can support your child to be successful. Go NPS!
Have a great week of learning everyone!
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools

Mayor Xay Visits Pell To Read With Students About Social Studies
Newport Mayor Xay Khamsyvoravong took a break from his busy schedule and joined our Pell Kindergarten students last week to read a book aligned with what students are learning in their social studies class about the importance of community. Thank you Mayor Xay! Our students always appreciate guest speakers and visitors.
Multilingual Learner Professional Development
Newport Public Schools are seeing a growing population of multilingual learners (MLL), and that means giving our dedicated teachers the resources they need to educate our MLL students and meet them where they are. Even though at some levels the numbers of students may be the same, the need for the support is greater because of the many more students having less English speaking/reading/writing skills. That’s why we were thankful to welcome Seidlitz Coaching, who visited last week for one of four scheduled MLL training sessions for our MLL certified teachers.
Learn 365 “Wild Family Saturday” A Success
This past weekend, our Learn 365 program hosted a “Wild Family Saturday” with lots of books, fun learning activities, and food prepared by our amazing culinary students for our participating Pell Elementary 365 after school students and families. Thank you to our teachers and One Newport community partners who attended to make this fun learning experience a success! Our next Wild Saturday will be on Saturday, November 16th at 10 am. All 365 families are encouraged to sign up. We already have many and we want to make sure we have enough delicious foods and games for everyone to enjoy. So please make an effort to sign up soon. We also want to wish everyone a fun time on November 5th for the field trip to the Roger Williams Zoo for all our 365 students and community partners. Enjoy the delicious lunch from NACTC!
Rogers High School Homecoming Weekend Pep Rally📣
Last Friday, Rogers High School held their annual pep rally ahead of Saturday’s homecoming football game. Viking pride was on full display and helped rally our football team onto a 32-14 victory over East Greenwich on Saturday. Thank you to our student leaders that planned and organized the event with their class advisor. Our students are really stepping up to taking on “real world responsibilities” as they lead the school and students. We are so proud of them.
Go Vikings!
Pell Students Win Fire Safety Calendar Contest Awards
In partnership with the Newport Fire Department, Pell Elementary students participated in National Fire Prevention Month, along with a safety calendar contest. Fire Chief Harp Donnelly recently visited school to congratulate Pell students on their winning fire safety calendar contest submissions. Great job to our Pell students and thank you to the Newport Fire Department for this fun learning partnership!
