MESSAGE FROM THE CCS ADMINISTRATION
Dear CCS Families, Caregivers and Charlotte Community,
What an opportunity we all took part in on Monday as we experienced the solar eclipse. Wherever we stood, we saw something that was brilliant. For a few moments we paused our busy schedules. We gave ourselves permission to stop, to breathe and to engage in a shared experience. Let’s hold onto that collective joy.
CCS is an ecosystem. There is no hiding from the challenges we are navigating in the context of this unprecedented budget season. Every human who shows up to CCS is here for each other and our students. We are all committed to students’ emotional wellbeing. We stay tuned into their academic successes and goals. We see the obstacles they are facing and are committed to helping them develop skills to navigate these challenges. We are all here to cheer on the growth and celebrations each child experiences.
Feedback comes regularly from individuals in our community. At times, it is an appreciation for a person or action. At other times it's a criticism about a person or action . To better our community, how can we all show up as collaborators? How do we ensure all voices are heard? How do we stay brave so people can come to the table as problem solvers and visionaries? How can we lift each other up? What are small acts of compassion and care we can embed in our actions each day? We look forward to growing this collaboration with students at the center.
With appreciation for your partnership,
Jen, Amanda and Beth

CELEBRATIONS FROM MR. EDLERTON AND MR. KENT
At CCS this week, we had an amazing time with the Kids on The Ball tennis group during all 2nd-8th grade PE classes! The coaches were fun and engaging. We all learned a lot about tennis through playing games. We plan on continuing this connection each year for years to come! Thank you Kids on The Ball!
2024 DISTRICT III JAZZ FESTIVAL
On Friday, Apr 5, 2024 The District III Jazz Festival was held at Browns River Middle School in Jericho, VT. Students from twelve middle schools across Chittenden County participated in this exciting event. Charlotte Central School was well represented.
CCS band director Andy Smith has been co-managing the festival since its inception ten years ago. This year, he had the honor of guest conducting the maiden voyage of the D-3 jazz combo, a new addition to the festival. Riak Chol, a CCS alto sax player, was a featured soloist in this ensemble and wowed the audience by performing three memorable improvised solos. Nathaneal Akselrod (trombone) and Odie Kallock (tenor saxophone) were incredible section players in the D-3 Big Band. They have gained a reputation of being solid and dependable members of the middle school festival scene as they also participated in the District III Band, Orchestra and Chorus Festival held in February of this year. They nailed the parts and brought continuity to the group with their outstanding preparation. Owen Scriver played lead trombone in the Big Band and turned the heads of the band directors, fellow ensemble members and audience with his creative and bold solos. He was featured in two tunes and was a highlight of the evening. Liam Anderson drove the entire Big Band by performing on the upright bass. He set the groove and kept it in the pocket all night long. He created a buzz with his outstanding solo and the feel he brought to the tunes.
CCS could not have had better representation and our students, once again, made the whole community proud. Bravo to Riak Chol, Nathaneal Akselrod, Odie Kallock, Owen Scriver and Liam Anderson.

This year's One Acts include:
ALICE by Lindsay Price. Directed by CVU seniors Julia Shrier, Nisha Hickock, and Veronica Miskavage. In this One Act adaptation of the classic story by Lewis Carroll, Alice follows the White Rabbit down a hole and stumbles through several iconic scenes in Wonderland, from the room of doors to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and the Queen's flamingo croquet game. Along the way, she encounters the Cheshire cat (who is split in three), the Caterpillar on its mushroom, a Pigeon on its nest, and Card Soldiers, before her adventure culminates in a trial before the Queen and King of Hearts themselves.
ANTIGONE NOW by Melissa Cooper. Directed by CVU seniors Xander Olszewski and Lynne Lynne. After the death of her father, Antigone's city has plunged into a terrible and brutal civil war, her brothers end up dead and her uncle settles in as king, leaving Antigone and her sister alone and scared in the world. Antigone goes against the King's law in order to follow the rules of the gods and suffers the ultimate consequence for doing what she feels is right.
BLACK COMEDY by Peter Shaffer. Directed by CVU seniors Frankie Fidler and Addie Nevitt. A world-renowned billionaire is coming to look at the work of the aspiring artist Brindsley Miller. To impress him and the strict, military-oriented father of his fiancee Carol Melkett, he has temporarily borrowed (without asking) the beloved furniture of his friend and neighbor Harold Gorringe. But all hell breaks loose when the lights go out, Harold comes back early from vacation, and the ghosts of Brindsley's past come back to haunt him. In this farcical comedy, the audience gets a clear look at the inner workings of a pleasant evening turned disaster, where light is dark, and darkness is light.

BeSMART
Safety is always an adult responsibility. Kids will be kids, so it’s always an adult’s responsibility to keep children safe. Always assume that curious or impulsive kids may find and touch an unsecured gun, even if they’ve been told not to. If a child handles a gun, a bad decision can quickly become a fatal one. Be SMART adults protect kids by making sure all guns are stored securely, which means they are inaccessible to kids, and by making sure children are never in the presence of unsecured guns. Learn more on this flyer.
Do you need to secure your firearm? Free cable gun locks are available in our school office, the school district's office, the police station, and public libraries. Stop by and pick one up!
SPECIAL EDUCATION PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
Hello Parents, Caregivers, and Friends of Children with special needs,
My name is Erin Bingham. I am the mother of 2 at HCS - a second grader and a preschooler. My youngest has a rare genetic condition, Williams Syndrome. I am interested in both creating a network of individuals who care for kids with special needs that can serve as a support and working together to establish a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) that would serve the entire district. SEPACs advocate for the interests of any child with any kind of special need at school. Although there is a commitment from CVSD administration, this is the first step in a long process to gauge interest and commitment, but there is no timeline yet.
If you are interested at any level in either connecting with others who support kids with special needs, or in understanding more about what would be necessary to start a SEPAC, please email me at bingham.erin@gmail.com.
Warmly,
Erin
