Important Information from the Nurses
When your child is going to be out sick, please be sure to email the teacher and the school nurses to let them know. You will still receive an automated call from the school to report your child is absent.
Winter Weather
Please remember that the weather changes daily in New England. We make every effort to take the kids outside when the weather allows us to do so. Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately and ready for the unpredictable New England weather.
Please be sure to label jackets, sweatshirts, hats, etc. as many winter items end up in our school lost and found.
Lost and Found
During this time of the year, students often forget sweatshirts, jackets, gloves, etc. Please remember to label all clothing so that it can be returned to your child. Please stop by the Lost and Found if your child is missing something. The Delaney School Lost and Found is located in the lobby at the Delaney School main entrance. Unclaimed items will be donated at the end of each month.
Preschool Playgound~Thank You!
The Delaney Preschool Playground Project was completed this fall, and the Grand Opening Celebration was held on Monday, November 25th. The committee was excited to celebrate the playground opening with many preschool students and families and with many of our amazing donors like the PTO.
The Playground Committee would like to thank the many generous donors in the community for helping to bring our vision to life for our youngest learners. Students are now able to play on a playground that is inclusive, safe, and fun!
Computer Science Education Week
CSEdWeek is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (Dec. 9, 1906). Admiral Hopper is known for popularizing the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of the programming languages we have today. A programming language is what a computer reads to execute all of its functions. Coding is the process of writing that language out in organized patterns for computers to read. Think of English as a programming language and writing a recipe as coding. Humans are the computer that reads the code in the English language and makes the recipe.
CSEd Week is designed to promote and introduce computer science education to students. The part of CSEd Week we participate in is an Hour of Code, which challenges students to complete an hour of coding related activities during the week. Coding and computer science continue to be important skills for an increasing number of career paths. We think it is important to provide students a foundational knowledge of coding and computer science so they are prepared for the ever changing workplace. When students leave the Wrentham Public Schools and head to their next educational opportunity we want them to have a favorable impression of computer science.
The characteristics that make someone successful at coding and computer science are ones that will serve students well in all aspects of their lives. Resilience, problem solving, creativity, brainstorming, and innovation are all skills that coding and computer science develop that have real connections to almost every area of learning.
Among the ways we'll be participating in CSEd Week this year are:
Technology Classes - Mrs. Moon and Mrs. Fox will be taking their Technology Classes through the Hour of Code with age appropriate challenges.
Bingo Challenge - Students and their families will be receiving a bingo card with different coding activities they can complete and return to Mrs. Moon in the Delaney School or Mrs. Fox in the Roderick School.
Code an Administrator - 3rd through 6th grade students will display their coding practice through an interactive assembly where they'll code an administrator to complete a task.
We hope this week of activities will engage and inspire our students. Take a moment at home to ask your student about what they are learning and explore the Bingo Challenge together.
Counselors' Corner
All of our students are familiar with this poster and the 3 parts of the brain we target throughout our lessons across grade levels (MindUp Curriculum).
This month in kindergarten and grade 1 we will be focusing on whole body listening and active vs. passive learning (self-regulation).
In second and third grade we will continue our focus on noticing our thinking/metacognition and self-perception. We will be using the angler fish as a wonderful example of adapting and persevering (creating healthy neuron connections), when we are faced with challenges and uncomfortable feelings (coping skills).
