Emerson Update 01/10/25
End of Semester One and New Beginnings
EMERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL MISSION
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE 01/10/25
Dear Emerson Families,
As we conclude the first semester, we look forward to a fresh start with the beginning of semester two classes next Tuesday, January 14th. New student schedules were distributed during Eagle Time on Thursday and are also available via Parent/Student Connect.
A student's lunch is assigned by their 4th hour teacher. There will be an A, B or C next to their 4th hour teacher's room number.
Example: 4C means Room 4 and C lunch.
Unless there is a mistake on a student's schedule (e.g., two math classes, a period without an assigned course, etc.), we are NOT changing students' schedules at this time.
If there is a mistake, students should sign up to see their counselors, and they will call them down once school has started next week.
Grades for the first semester will be available in Parent/Student Connect on January 20th.
A reminder that there is NO SCHOOL this upcoming Monday, January 13th.
Next week Monday, our dedicated staff will engage in professional learning communities to enhance universal supports for all students in this upcoming semester. They will also meet with their respective departments and continue to collaborate and share ideas to improve the classroom experience.
As winter weather sets in and our roads become slippery, a friendly reminder to please drive safely during school pick-up and drop-off. Information regarding inclement weather and snow day determinations is included in this newsletter.
We are halfway through the school year, and your continued support is invaluable. Our partnership with our families is essential for the success of our students. Thank you for being an integral part of the Emerson community.
With Eagle Pride,
Bruce Rivera

QUICK LINKS
Winter is Here! Please, dress accordingly.
Winter is Coming: A Friendly Reminder
As the weather turns colder, let's make sure our students stay warm and safe.
Building Times:
- Early Bird Arrival: The building will open at 7:30 AM.
- Morning Routine: Students arriving before 7:30 AM will wait outside. Once the building opens, they'll head to the cafeteria until 7:50 AM when they can go to their lockers.
- Afternoon Dismissal: All students should be picked up or leave the building by 3:00 PM unless they’re participating in a supervised activity.
Dressing for the Weather: Please ensure your child is dressed warmly for the outdoor wait times.
Let’s work together to keep our students comfortable and safe during these colder months.
SNOW DAYS
How Are They Decided in LPS?
Recognizing that our decision to close schools in inclement weather has a large impact on LPS families, we thought it would be helpful to share the factors that go into a weather-related school closing. Our goal is to always have school, whenever possible, knowing that students are best served by being in class. However, when Mother Nature throws a curve ball, we must keep staff and student safety as our top priority when making this decision.
How Do We Make Our Decision?
Several factors go into making a “snow day” call, including:
- Information on current road conditions from our transportation and maintenance crews; conditions are monitored throughout the night, and again at approximately 3:30 – 4 a.m. by LPS operations personnel
- Amount of snow and ice accumulated
- Duration and timing of the snow and/or ice event
- Temperature and wind chill (for safety of walkers and students at bus stops) We use a -20 wind chill for a sustained amount of time as a “cold weather closure” guide
- School building conditions (electricity, heat, water)
- School parking lot and sidewalk conditions
- Current weather conditions, along with predicted weather, but closures cannot be determined solely on predictions
- Will buses be operational and running on schedule?
- Consultation with weather consultants and other nearby school districts

A few key things to note:
The Livonia Parent Advisory Committee (LPAC) seeks parent representation from each Livonia Special Education Program. Parent representative volunteers have a child/children with a disability(ies). The LPAC also provides advisory input on matters regarding improvement of Special Education services within our school district.
Our Facebook page shares information of interest to our families and students.
Here, you will find electronic flyers for programs and events geared toward kids!
We hope that you enjoy the many offerings from around our great community!
If you have a program that you'd like to advertise, please email your flyer to Stacy Jenkins at sjenkins3@livoniapublicschools.org for approval. We follow a set of guidelines for approval and are only able to accept flyers for non-profit organizations that benefit our local children.
Enjoy!

Emerson Clubs
Emerson Middle School has several clubs where students can connect with their peers, learn a new skill, or simply hang out with friends. We've had a volleyball club, robotics club, GSA club, and homework club. We would love to offer something for everyone! Our club list is always growing, and we're always open to new ideas. If your student has a dream club in mind or if you'd like to be an awesome advisor, let us know! Joining a club is a great way to make new friends, learn new skills, and have a blast!
