Principal Engdall
Greetings Shaw Montessori,
Wow, it was so great to see so many of you at the 1st Site Council PTA meeting last night. Thank you for coming and showing support for our community and students. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 18th. Our primary parent education “Passport to Montessori” will take place from 5:00-6:00. PTA will begin at 6:00 in the cafeteria.
Each year we publish the incredible “Park Book” written by a former Shaw parent. Please preview it for information on Shaw parking lot do’s and don’ts. Just a few key things to remember, you may NOT park on the red curb. This is a ‘kiss and drop” zone only. You may NOT be in the afternoon release queue line on the red curb if you are picking up a child from before or aftercare until 3:55 when our major school release/pickup has been completed. If you are picking up your child from aftercare prior to 3:55, plan to park your car and walk up.
Another source of information for our new and returning parents is the Shaw Family Guide. This guide, will give you lots of information about our community. Take a look! If you still have questions, you can stop by the school office, read See Shaw Shine every Sunday when it is delivered to your electronic mail box, attend monthly PTA/Site Council meetings, log onto the parent Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1614897512101327/or email your child’s teacher. Hopefully, you will never feel at a loss for the information that you need!
Lastly, parents of primary children, when signing your child in or out in the sign in/out books PLEASE sign with your first initial and full last name. Initials alone will not do. In order for us to keep our preschool licensure in good standing, it is imperative that you follow these directions.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
Our fourth week of school was a great success. We amended beds and planted some summer seeds. Of course, we pulled Bermuda grass along our annual flower garden row. And we continued our verdolagas block!
Purslane is a wonderful plant. It contains plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids (which makes it a brain food). The students chortled at the term, “omega-3 fatty acids”. Some chose to replace it with the euphemism, “fluffy”. Regardless, they are healthy fats and should be consumed without stigma. Purslane is also a hyperaccumulator-a term and function I taught to the older students. It means that the plant sequesters heavy metals and toxins in the soil and neutralizes them. Pretty neat!
We also harvested some of our prickly pear fruits. Our small prickly pear can not support a lesson with the students, but if you know of a place to forage for prickly pear OR want to provide some fruits from your home, we will happily accept.
If you need any transplants OR seeds, please see me or email me. You can reach me at my faculty email listed below.
We will host a couple parent workdays and a native planting day. The following dates are on the calendar:
· September 14th (native planting day)
· September 28th (parent workday)
· December 3rd & 5th (holiday concert afterparty)
· February 22nd (2nd parent workday)
You can access the volunteer signup site by clicking on this link: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, aluminum cans and MASON JARS. PLEASE, NO MORE EGGSHELLS. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. Otherwise, the front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!

Shaw PTA
We had a fantastic turnout at our first PTA meeting this week—thank you to everyone who attended! For those who couldn’t make it, the meeting minutes are attached for your review.
Save the Date! Bingo Night is coming up on Friday, September 13th. Join us for a spaghetti dinner at 5:30 p.m., with Bingo kicking off at 6:00 p.m. Parent Ashli Estrada is working hard to organize this event, and we could use some extra hands to make it a success! If you can help, please sign up using the link provided. We’d love to have you involved! https://signup.com/go/sqjThXA
