Book Fair is Coming!
Our GATE Book Fair is coming up quickly, and we're really excited! Our book fair will be held in the Griffin's Nest (Library) beginning Thursday, December 12th. Book Fair runs until Wednesday, December 18th. For parents who would prefer to shop with their students, we will offer two evening shopping times, from 5-6pm on Friday, December 13th and Wednesday, December 18th.
To make shopping more convenient, Scholastic offers an e-wallet program, where you can add money to an account for your child to shop!

Gate Talent Show
Teacher of the Year
Greetings GATE Parents/Guardians,
The Oakland County Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are presented annually to honor and reward teachers in Oakland County who have achieved, through their effort and example, the highest standards of excellence in their profession. Oakland Schools has created these awards out of a conviction that a quality public education system is essential to the health and vitality of our community. We believe that encouraging excellence in education is the shared responsibility of all who reap its benefits.
If you would like to nominate a GATE teacher for consideration for this award, please write a statement describing why you feel that teacher is deserving of the nomination. You can include specific examples and stories of how the teacher has gone above and beyond to support your child. Please limit your statement to 600 words and submit all nominations to the building principal by Friday, January 10.
Thank you for helping us to recognize the outstanding teachers that we have at GATE.
Positivity Project Trait of the Week!
Dear Families,
This week, our school community will focus on the Other People Mindset of Supporting Others When They Struggle. This means when other people are struggling, we do our best to help them out.
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical part of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.
To practice and encourage this Other People Mindset at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
Thank you for your support!
Griffin Post
The Griffin Post just published its fourth edition! We are starting December off strong with a fun wintry edition! If you want to learn more about skiing, a British monarch, the world's tallest waterfall, if you are looking for a great book to read, or if you want to try some fun challenges (in our game section), you have come to the right spot! Visit griffinpost.wixsite.com/gate to read our articles!
Education Benefits Application Reminder
This is a reminder for all families to complete the CEP Education Benefits Application, if you have not already done so for this school year. Although school meals are free for all students, it is critical that all households complete the CEP Education Benefits Application. This information determines the amount of money our schools receive from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs that support our students, staff, and families.
Families can submit their completed application online through the Meal Magic Family Portal. Any questions can be forwarded to Megan Haase at megan.haase@avondaleschools.org.
