Welcome Back
We are excited to start the 24/25 school year at Coal Ridge High School. Being here since the inauguration of our building and hosting the first sophomore and freshmen classes, I have seen CRHS grow into what it is today, and to me that is community. Every person on our staff is dedicated to creating an environment where each student can thrive. We can't do it alone, though. I encourage our parents and guardians to collaborate with our teachers and administration to continue to establish a culture where we support our students in achieving their highest potential academically and socially. Coal Ridge High School is an amazing place for our community, and as we start this year I look forward to establishing connections with all of you to continue to make CRHS more than just a school building, but a home for all of our students.
Twenty Years in the Making
As the 2024/2025 school year starts for the Coal Ridge High School students, staff, and community, it signifies the building's twentieth year. Over the past two decades, CRHS has served the communities of Silt and New Castle by providing education and extracurricular activities for thousands of kids who have called our halls home. We look forward to celebrating this vicennial year and showcasing memories, stories, and accolades of Coal Ridge and many of our proud students and alumni. If you have something special you want to share about CRHS please contact Michael Mikalakis at mmikalakis@garfieldre2.net.
Athletics
Fall sports will begin at the start of the school year. Athletes must have a current physical, have their CHSAA paperwork filled out, and have the district's athletic policy signed and turned in. The various paperwork can be picked up in the front office prior to the year starting or will be handed out by the athlete's coach.
One major change is that athletic fees have increased in the district. The fee is now $100 for an athlete per sport. This information can be found in the Garfield RE2 athlete code of conduct and policy handbook.
If you have any questions about athletics, please contact Mr. Ben Kirk at bkirk@garfieldre2.net.
Artificial Intelligence
Technology advances all the time. It is crazy to think of how much has changed in the landscape of education since I was a student, to my years teaching in a classroom, and to today as an administrator. With this changing environment, we constantly have to look into what is happening and how that will impact students and staff. One of the big topics is Artificial Intelligence. I would be remiss if I said I am an expert on the topic, and truly with how fast it changes I doubt many people are, but I am committed to continue to learn about the ins and outs of AI and how to integrate it into the school appropriately. Are there going to be questions, challenges, setbacks, and advances, of course, but this is a new aspect of the digital landscape we live in, and we need to take the time to approach it thoughtfully. At Coal Ridge High School we will continue to have professional development with staff about the integration of various AI platforms in their classrooms with their own use and student use. Technology continually changes, and we must continue to educate ourselves to use it appropriately.
Communication
Inevitably there will come a time throughout the year when there are student issues. We encourage you as the parent and/or guardian to advocate for your student. Many times these issues are the result of a misunderstanding, and sometimes they are bigger.
At CRHS we ask that if your student has a issue (academically or behaviorally) in a classroom to please contact their teacher. If this doesn't resolve the issue please contact administation.
We can never become better without collaboration with our parents and guardians.
