Mrs. Tabor, our Lead Counselor, introduced the platform to parents on Wednesday, October 30th. If you missed the presentation, you can view it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBRkRkg9cA4
Dual Credit Important Information
Students who are interested in taking a dual credit course, must have a qualifying SAT, ACT, or TSIA2 placement test score. The qualifying score chart can be found here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PRb8Ptvg5Srx8XRZ8J3vdVK6gOgSq3uNp0PQNqga76M/edit?tab=t.0 Students who already have a qualifying score on file, whether it’s an SAT, ACT, or TSIA2 test they took last year, are NOT required to re-test. Students can sign up to take the SAT or ACT test through www.collegeboard.org and www.act.org. The PSAT test is no longer an acceptable qualifying test.
For students not wanting to take the SAT or ACT test, they also have the option to take the TSIA2 placement test. The Texas Success Initiative (TSIA2) is a college readiness test. The test includes reading, writing, and math. When a student takes the TSIA2 test, their scores are good for 5 years! In order for students to take the TSIA2 test, they need to create an Accuplacer account as well as complete a pre-assessment activity prior to the testing day. This test will be given on our campus next week and during the week of March 24th. Next week’s administration is at capacity. Instructions for creating your Accuplacer account and pre-assessment activity can be found here. https://sites.google.com/conroeisd.net/twhs-dual-credit/dc-steps/step-3-qualifying-test-scores/tsia-2-testing Students are not required to take the entire test, however, it is encouraged in case they choose to do another dual credit course at a later date.
The deadline to complete all of the dual credit steps and submit dc paperwork as well as qualifying test scores is Friday, April 11th, 2025. Students are encouraged to sign up now for whichever test they choose. Having a qualifying score will help them to complete the remaining dual credit steps. Students are able to begin completing the dual credit steps https://sites.google.com/conroeisd.net/twhs-dual-credit/dc-steps January 6th, 2025, and this can be done prior to the student meeting with their counselor.
During the individual course request meetings with counselors, there is ample time to sign up for a dual credit course. However, the paperwork should be submitted completely to ensure placement in the courses. We only have a certain number of seats available for several of the dual credit classes, and they are assigned on a first come, first served basis.

SWIM & DIVE: The Highlander Swim and Dive Team had excellent performances at the Woodlands Invite! Our athletes put in a lot of work throughout the year and it showed at this meet with both boys and girls winning the meet. Our Diver Hammer Down Award winners for the meet are Shannon W. and Valentino A. who were the winners of the dive portion of the meet. Our Hammer Down Award winners in swimming were David B., Ainsley M., Emma V., Stef V., Jason P., Justin B., Peyton K., and Kenzie R. All these swimmers have been working hard and had best performances at the Woodlands Invite!

TENNIS: The Highlander tennis team completed the Fall season with a State semi-final loss to eventual 6A State Champion Round Rock Westwood. TWHS finished the season 17-4-1 and ranked #4 in the final TTCA 6A rankings. This was the 5th consecutive trip to State for Team Tennis and their District winning streak is now at 76 matches in a row.
CLUBS & ORGANIZATIONS NEWS
JROTC: We hosted the REC Foundation’s first Aerial Drone Competition of the season in the whole state of Texas at the Jett Center on Saturday, November 2nd. Our Varsity 2 team, “Firefox,” earned the Airmanship Award and our Varsity 1 team, “The Flying Penguins,” earned the All-around Champion Award—well done!
This past Monday, November 11th, we participated in the annual CISD Salute to Veterans at Woodforest Stadium. Our two Joint Leadership Academic Bowl teams completed Level I of the nationwide competition this week and eagerly await the results to see if they advance to the next round.
Next Saturday, November 23rd, our Orienteering Team competes in the Houston Orienteering Club’s Jones Forest Meet here in The Woodlands. We will also have cadets volunteering in support of the Cross Country Team’s NXR Meet at the Bear Branch Sports Fields. Finally, on Thanksgiving, cadets will provide a Color Guard and assist with crowd control for the YMCA’s annual Run Through The Woods event.
WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA: Each year our JROTC Booster Club organizes a donation drive for Wreaths Across America--the organization which purchases and places wreaths on the graves of veterans nationwide. You can help WAA (and our Booster Club) by sponsoring wreaths using this link: https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/173137/Overview. Due to the high volume of traffic nationwide, you may experience temporary website errors--please be patient and try again later if you encounter difficulty.
Wreaths are $17 each to sponsor, and $5 of that amount goes to our Booster Club (wreaths are $17 whether you purchase them through our JROTC-specific link or on your own). You can designate your contribution on behalf or in honor of/memory of a veteran or other loved one.
NOTE: Wreaths do not get sent to you. You are SPONSORING wreaths which WAA will deliver to Veterans Cemeteries to have placed on graves (however, you have the option during the checkout process to "pair" wreaths, which means you can purchase additional wreaths to be sent to a home address if you'd like). You are not obligated to be present at a cemetery where/when the wreaths are placed. However, if you and your family wish to do so, WAA will be happy to have you participate--click "Volunteer" on the link for details.

FINE ARTS
BAND & GUARD: CONGRATULATIONS to TWHS Marching Band & Color Guard on a great finish to a wonderful season! Thank you to everyone who attended our last home performance of “Fantasia on Frenchmen Street” on Nov. 5. We are beyond thankful for your support! TWHS Marching Band & Color Guard culminated our competition season this past weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio with two major competitions back-to-back. The first competition was at the Bands of America Super Regionals against 69 other bands. At the end of this tough tournament, TWHS earned 4th place. The weekend continued with our last contest of the year - UIL 6A State. We are proud to announce that TWHS placed 5th out of 40 bands in the state. Way to go UIL STATE FINALISTS! Our semester continues with TMEA Region auditions and Holly Jolly Jingle. Mark your calendars for our annual Holiday Market on December 7.
CLINIC NOTES
We are going to discuss a different medical condition relevant to our students in each issue of the Highlander Happenings. We hope you find this information helpful, but please keep in mind that we cannot give medical advice or make a diagnosis. The best source of information is always your child’s physician.
Stomachaches
This is one of the most common complaints that we see in the clinic, along with headaches (discussed in the last issue). They can be caused by digestive issues, such as gas pain, constipation, diarrhea, food allergies or intolerances; inflammation causing an infection, such as viral gastroenteritis (stomach virus); stress, or even hunger.
Treatment of stomach pain depends on the cause of the pain. It is important to figure out why it is hurting, especially if it doesn’t go away on its own. If the pain is caused by digestive issues, a person can try to eat slowly, not overeat, avoid eating foods that seem to trigger symptoms like gas, bloating, or diarrhea, and make sure they are getting enough fluids and fiber in their diet. If a stomach virus is the culprit, the digestive system needs to be given a rest from anything beyond clear liquids and simple carbohydrates for at least a few hours (remember the BRAT diet?). If stress or anxiety seems to be causing the pain, a counselor or therapist can offer help with ways to reduce those triggers. Stomach pain that is not from a muscle injury should never be treated with ibuprofen; it can cause more harm than good.
When should you see a doctor? You should schedule an appointment for persistent fever, persistent nausea or vomiting, blood in your stools, urine, or vomit; abdominal swelling and tenderness to the touch, or pain that worsens over time.

There are no early releases after 2:00 p.m. Please feel free to call the Attendance office with any questions or concerns. We are happy to help!
FOREIGN LANGUAGE: The German, French, Chinese and Japanese teachers at The Woodlands High School would like to introduce ourselves, talk about our backgrounds, and explain more about high school course selection and expectations in our first-year language courses. See our monthly newsletter here: TWHS Chinese, French, German, and Japanese Newsletter
NEWCOMERS: I want to remind you that we have a department called NEWCOMERS, a welcoming center where Iytzia Cardenas, our Social Services Liaison, has been helping families for over 12 years! She assists newly arrived families or those planning to move to our school district with all their questions, making their transition smoother and less frustrating. Feel free to reach out to her at icardenas@conroeisd.net!
Also, please mark your calendars for January 22, 2025! She, along with another colleague, will present a conference in Spanish for newly arrived families with children in grades 7-12. This will help you better understand the educational system and address all your questions. From her own experience, she knows that choosing courses can raise many questions, and we want to ensure you feel confident and understand how things work here compared to your home countries.
NINTH GRADE ART: Winter-themed/Holiday Art Contest Winner Announced! The winning artwork representing all high schools across the district is from our campus! Ninth-grader Anna "Sophia" de Vries won the contest with her watercolor painting, entitled, "Jolly Night". This was determined by votes from all members of the CISD Fine Arts Dept. The district will use her artwork for their holiday cards and give Sophia district-wide recognition plus a printed set of her own holiday cards.
SCHOOL CASH ONLINE: Attention Parents: Please be sure to check your child's School Cash Online account frequently. The website is www.conroeisd.schoolcashonline.com. Fees are added throughout the year for various activities. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the fees charged to your child, please contact the classroom teacher or club sponsor. Failure to pay fees listed as "required" or "overdue" may result in a student not being permitted to participate in some extracurricular activities. If you need assistance logging in to School Cash Online or adding and viewing your child's account, please visit schoolcashonline.com/Home/Support and view the resources available to help.
THE WOODLANDS HIGH SCHOOL ART TRUST
WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR 14th YEAR!!!
Have you ever noticed the 66 works of art by established Texas artists that are permanently displayed in the hallways at school? This is The Woodlands High School Art Collection and the works have been selected and purchased by our students. Each year we add new works to the collection and our next selection process has begun. Our student committee narrowed down the works submitted by Texas artists to 12 that were voted on by the entire student body this past week. Posters of these artworks have been on display throughout the school, video presentations were shown to the students and the original pieces were displayed in the cafeteria this week. All students are allowed one vote for their favorite work. The students will purchase as many as possible of the pieces that receive the most votes.
Thank you to all the artists that submitted their work for consideration. This year's nominated artists are:
Cassandra Bohne-Linnard (Cypress), Jonas Criscoe (Houston), Daryl Gannon (Conroe) Patti Gary (Montgomery), Ksenia Kozhenkova (Houston), Tom Larock (The Woodlands) Caroline Marcos (Tomball), Elena Martino (Willis), Drew McDonald (Austin) Lynet McDonald (The Woodlands), Asiya Nouretdinova (Pearland), and Jason Turner (Spring).
Visit our website to see the winning entries: www.twhsat.org.
Although the artworks are purchased through funds set aside by Student Council from the Homecoming Dance, the framing, lighting and conservation of these pieces need funding. Consider helping with that funding and show your support for The Woodlands High School Art Trust by joining our "One Hundred Friends of Art." Our goal is to have 100 arts supporters make an annual donation to support our cause. Donations are tax deductible and start as low as $10!! Visit our website to make a contribution: www.twhsat.org.
The Woodlands High School Art Trust (TWHSAT) a 501(c)3 organization, was established in 2011 to help maintain, conserve and display the student-selected, student-purchased collection of established artists at The Woodlands High School. The vision for the TWHS Art Trust is to see the art collection grow each year and to have it extend through the hallways of the high school. Students use funds from their Homecoming Dance to purchase the art works. TWHSAT fundraises for the preservation and permanent display of the art works.
Other than the public sculptures around The Woodlands, this is the ONLY permanent collection of art available to the public. It is seen by THOUSANDS of people every day. Please consider supporting this unique collection that sets us apart from other public high schools and strengthens our goal of being one of the best high schools in the state and country.
For more information on The Woodlands High School Art Trust please visit our website www.twhsat.org or contact Susan Cosculluela at twhsat@gmail.com.
