SOAR
A FREE, in-person extended summer learning camp
What
Richland Two is planning to offer SOAR (Summer Opportunity for Academic Readiness), a FREE, in-person extended learning camp.
Please note SOAR is separate from the Read to Succeed Summer Reading Camp offered by the district each summer. This is separate from the traditional summer school for middle and high school students who need summer school to be promoted to the next grade. Students cannot participate in both. SOAR is separate from Special Education Extended School Year (ESY) Services that are offered each summer. Some Special Education students will have the option of attending both SOAR and ESY.
At the elementary level, instruction will focus on English/language arts and mathematics and possibly additional enrichment opportunities.
At the middle level, the focus will be preparing students for the upcoming school year in the areas of English/language arts and mathematics.
High school students will be able to select which of the available courses they will take. Course offerings will include several English, Mathematics, Science, and ACT/SAT Prep. This list may expand based on student interest to include World Language and US History.
Who
The program is open to all students currently enrolled in pre-kindergarten through eleventh grade.
Why: 1. Elementary students will be previewing ELA and math standards, content, and skills for the upcoming school year.
2. Middle school students will focus on math and ELA.
3. High School students will be previewing content for the upcoming school year. Example: If your student is enrolled in English 2 for 21-22, the student will preview the course to have a strong foundation for the new school year.
When
The elementary SOAR program will offer full-day classes starting Monday, June 21 and ending on Tuesday, July 20. Exact start and end times will be determined after registration closes and transportation logistics are finalized.
The middle and high SOAR program will offer half-day classes starting Monday, June 21 and ending on Thursday, July 22. Exact start and end times will be determined after registration closes and transportation logistics are finalized.
There will not be SOAR classes on Fridays and during the week of July 4.
Transportation
Transportation to and from SOAR will be provided for families that request it.
What we need from you
Your response will allow us to plan for the appropriate number of teachers, support staff, and bus drivers needed. It will also help us determine if we will need to offer the program at each elementary, middle, and high school, or if we will offer this opportunity at centrally located schools.
Two questions. We promise!
If you’re interested, log into your Parent Portal account between March 22-March 31 and indicate:
you want your child to participate
if you will need transportation.
