LSHS Commencement Ceremony
Lake Shore High School celebrated its 101st commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 1, 2024, conferring requirements on 190 graduates. Watch video clip.
A copy of the program can be found here.
The bagpipe entrance, reflections from speeches, and music from our choir and band performances were truly breathtaking. All graduates wore the same gown this year – red with white arm stripes which promotes unity.
Each graduate was given the opportunity to invite their Lake Shore staff VIP to attend graduation. This VIP was a staff member that had the biggest positive impact on their education experience. The VIPs were seated on the field in a reserved area so they could hug, high five, fist bump or politely wave at their beloved students.
This year’s keynote speaker was Kara Wolfbauer. Wolfbauer is a 2019 graduate of Lake Shore High School. In her time at LSHS, Wolfbauer excelled in the media productions program. Since graduating, she went on to be the Valedictorian of her graduating class at the University of Detroit Mercy, a decorated collegiate softball player, and is now employed as the official Game Host for both the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings.
For 101 years, the Lake Shore community has trusted us to educate their children,“ said Lake Shore High School Principal Janelle Bross. “It is not a commitment we take lightly. Graduation is the culmination of years of hard work from students as well as teachers and families. This year and every year is a celebration for not just the students, but the entire community as well.”

Care Solace
Summer is just around the corner, and it's time to start planning your warm-weather activities! As you make your summer to-do list, prioritize self-care and well-being.
- Embrace the great outdoors. Spending time outside has numerous benefits, such as reducing stress and anxiety, improving mood, and boosting creativity. Consider activities like walking, hiking, biking, gardening, or relaxing in a shady park.
- Make time for loved ones. It's easy to get caught up in our daily routines and miss out on quality time with friends and family. This summer, prioritize reconnecting with your loved ones through shared meals, game nights, movie nights, or simply picking up the phone for a catch-up call.
- Prioritize sleep. During busy times, our sleep habits can suffer. Make an effort to establish a consistent sleep schedule and give your body the rest it deserves.
Most importantly, have fun and do something that brings you joy each day. Whether trying a new hobby, indulging in a favorite activity or simply taking time to relax and unwind, make sure to prioritize your happiness this summer.
If you or a family member are struggling with mental health or substance use issues, remember that help is available. Care Solace, a complimentary and confidential coordination service provided by Lake Shore Public Schools, is available 24/7/365 throughout the summer to help you find mental health care or substance use treatment providers. Call 888-515-0595 for multilingual support or visit caresolace.com/lsps to search for providers on your own or receive assistance through video chat, email, or phone.
We wish you a happy and healthy summer break, and we'll see you again soon!
Inspiration
Special Athletes Field Day
Creating something is all about problem solving. Lake Shore Public Schools is committed to inclusion and demonstrated that through their own Special Athletes Field Day.
Athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy while participating in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship among their families, athletes and the community. We saw that as our 70 student-athletes and teams facilitated activities and supported their peers.
The stations can be found here: https://tinyurl.com/LSSpecialAthletes
Inclusion is important because it develops a sense of belonging. It is the philosophy of acceptance and being valued. This is an important part of Shorian culture. Special Olympics Michigan provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
Student volunteer Megan Sweeney loved volunteering at the Soccer Kick station. She said, "I enjoyed explaining and showing students how-to do everything, meet new people, and smile together. It was a fun day!"
Thank you to Adapted Physical Education Teacher Cris Belanger, Carsen Best, and Tanner Belanger, and our Special Education Department for organizing and running the event, Food Service for the delicious BBQ lunch, Maintenance and Operations team for setup and cleanup, School Nurse, families, student-athletes, and student participants! A special shoutout to Jessica Schornak for creating individual schedules to help all students know expectations: https://www.lakeshoreschools.org/common/pages/DownloadFileByUrl.aspx?key=UzRaI2rv0VBGAWUJobx4Xl3%2f7BBy80WnnCHRnJtePiJOAS4fxzoiRgiB7%2bOvbPrTuHtCdy8%2fekxSnICztU77Faeme0FMUaYFeBNm38%2buFoes67feSiLKfqFvq5sAS3DSlfppCc9%2fEo5cMjodGfEsZrprkBO61DZ7C0KNqo2zDj3YBaZgMz4qliGe2BVEAJsL%2btz%2fn1VDEda6cjsRf8EO4yg0Yek272TJKlKwa%2fC14CeM70kK
We also appreciate Badalamenti-Ferlito Orthodontics for sponsoring the popsicles!
Bonus: Exciting results from the #MK8 competition with 33 students competing for victory! The champions are:
- 1st Place - Caden P.
- 2nd Place - Cameron C.
- 3rd Place - Gavin L.
Elementary Field Days
Our elementary students celebrated the end of the school year by participating in Field Day events. To have a field day means to get a lot of pleasure and enjoyment from doing something; We are certain this was a true expression for our Tigers, Rockets, and All-Stars!
Although students were excited to earn the W in so many activities like Flying Shoes, Fill-It-Up Relay, Soccer Shot, Bean Bag Cornhole, Javelin Throw, Football Toss, Dizzy Bat Races, Sack Races, Long Jump, 50yd Dash, and Disc Golf, they also rewarded with hugs and high fives from their friends for effort. Good sportsmanship always wins.
In addition to traditional field day events, STEAM activities were also part of the fun. These activities included Straw Rockets, Lego Marble Run, Paper Airplanes, Cup Stacking, Styrofoam and Toothpick Building, Community Circles, Bubble Wands, and Aluminum Foil Boats.
Lake Shore’s Class of 2002 graduate Miranda Wiszowaty volunteered to help at our Special Athletes Field Day and again at Rodgers Elementary because of her own love for the district and desire to give back. It is wonderful to see so many LSHS student-athletes and volunteer parents assisting with the activities!
Thank you to Mrs. Pecoraro, Mr. Brosnan, and Mr. Warrick for making these special days for our students and to Badalamenti-Ferlito Orthodontics for donating popsicles to every student!
Thank You
Our ability to put together a successful graduation is tied directly to the behind-the-scenes people who disguise themselves in the shadows, never asking for credit, but instead committed to the idea that #OtherPeopleMatter.
It is administrators like Dr. Bross, Dr. Stevens, and Mr. Puvalowski and staff members who plan, coordinate, and execute rehearsals and speeches, while giving both our community and students direction so they know what to expect and where to be.
It is our audio, video, and drone footage displayed from multiple angles and coordinated by Mrs. Blaszkowski and her team of current students and talented alumni.
It is our contracted professional photographer, Stewart Fine Portraits, who provides a beautiful stack of memories, in picture form, that will soon be framed inside living rooms and crafted into scrapbooks.
It is the signage that is wrapped around the John U'Ren Stadium is absolutely gorgeous thanks to the talent and vision of Conlon Installations.
It is our office staff who put together and distribute programs and serve as the hub of information for both students and families.
It is our Maintenance and Operations team who manages setup and cleanup, parking, and supervision. They are the first to arrive, last to leave, and do it all with a smile. Were you fortunate enough to be transported by golf cart, too?
It is our Food Service team who prepares a breakfast for over 200 staff and students to energize everyone for the day.
It was our bus drivers who drove from school to school for our Senior Walk tradition. Their care and concern for our graduates since their first ride until their last contributed to their wellbeing of today.
It is our Board of Education who develop policies and make tough decisions all year and could be found supporting student achievement at graduation.
In addition, several staff members assisted other departments with roles not necessarily part of their official role.
Their commitment to the larger group effort makes them both good teammates and citizens. Greater good results from the collective efforts of our stakeholders.
Innovation
Little Inventors
We celebrated Skylar Perryman's idea, selected from many nominations to be brought to life by STARBASE One: https://www.littleinventors.org/ideas/. Delilah Maxon is also a winner! Her invention will be brought to life by College of Creative Studies.
The 4th grade girls of Masonic Heights Elementary met the makers and had a brief conversation about their ideas and some plans on how they will bring it to life. They went over design, colors and material to create a prototype of their inventions.
Delilah responded to Dominic's invention challenge and called her invention The Raz (Relax and Zen). Her invention helps babies sleep or calm down because nothing's better than a quiet baby. It can rock the baby to sleep while mimics walking. It has a hand to pat the baby and a bottle warmer! She said, "I babysit a family friends' 3-year-old and understand the importance of helping Raey rest." When Raey rests, we all rest.
Skylar's invention is called the Portable Baby Puzzle (P.B.P.) Her teacher, Shantae Larke explained, "Her invention was created in response to challenge #1 of the Little Inventors challenges this year: Can you come up with something to entertain a baby for at least 30 minutes? She did such a great job of labeling her drawing, showing the inside and the outside of the puzzle, and describing how parents could use it. She's such a hard worker and she takes so much pride in everything she does; I'm so proud of her and I can't wait to see what it looks like in real life!"
According to Mark Muzzin, STEM Education Consultant, their selection is a big deal.
Both Delilah and Skylar love problem-solving and claimed they really enjoyed this project. Both girls and their families are invited to the MISD tonight to see their projects come to life!
For over 29 years, STARBASE is a leading innovator in providing unforgettable and meaningful science, technology, engineering, and math learning experiences for young students. STARBASE creates an educational playground that is full of practical, hands-on activities that excite kids, sparks their imaginations, builds confidence, and nurtures a life-long resiliency to learn.
Learn more about the Macomb Intermediate School District's sensational stellar inventions in partnership with the MISTEM Network are launching Operation Lift-Off: MISD Mission Moon by visiting https://misd.littleinventors.org/collections/mission-moon.
Lake Shore Public Schools continues to celebrate Madeline Calappi's Utensil Helmet in 2022, Emma DeHayes's Mermaid Wheelchair in 2023, and Charlotte Partridge's Picker Upper Monster in 2023.
Student Engagement
Engagement looks different inside different classrooms dependent upon different kids, different times, or different environments.
At Masonic Heights Elementary, students use recess to relieve stress and get out their wiggles. Laughter was abundant. Earlier in the year, LSPS students joined a massive solar eclipse watch party from the playground.
In Mr. Taylor's Biology B class, students are currently working on their Food Web/Biome Poster Board project. This project allows students to work with a partner and to create a posterboard that shows the role each organism plays in their food web/biome and the relationships between organisms with the biome they have chosen. In addition, the project allows students to describe their biome, identify the impact if an organism goes extinct or if another organism is introduced to their food web. Lastly, students will compare 2 food chains within their food web as to the energy flow for an energy pyramid for each food chain they chose.
In Mr. Gardiner's STEAM class, students were building and solving escape rooms using Breakout EDU. At Breakout EDU, they believe that constructive challenges build engaged and capable learners. With their library of standards-aligned games, educators can create a learner-centered experience that allows students to work together, think conceptually, and utilize prior knowledge for deeper comprehension.
The Social Studies Department arranged for a regiment of Civil War reenactors to visit Kennedy Middle School and teach 8th grade students about the Civil War era such as dressing, eating, camping, marching, drilling and fighting. They showed students how to use wooden muskets and provided a demonstration.
Honors 10 students went on a nature walk to enhance their study of the Transcendentalist movement. The need for and benefit of sunshine is important for a student's overall well-being. The sun's UV rays help your body make this nutrient, which is important for your bones, blood cells, and immune system. We love that these classes took their learning outdoors!
Thanks to so many great educators including our Galileo leaders, these learning outcomes are made possible. Since 2005, the Galileo Institute has supported the advancement of teacher leadership through a variety of projects and initiatives. The Galileo Institute also serves a s a partner to the Galileo Teacher Leadership Academy, a 29 district consortium that has prepared more than 900 Southeast Michigan teacher leaders since its founding in 1997.
Tree Donation
Everyone enjoys the month of June for the warm weather, serving as a reminder of how aesthetically pleasing our school campuses are.
Our outdoor spaces became even more beautiful thanks to a generous donation of trees from the City of Saint Clair Shores! Upon inspection, the label read "ivory silk tree lilac". The Ivory Silk Lilac Tree is a marvel of the senses, with resplendent clusters of white flowers and a pleasant scent you and pollinators both love. How exciting!
Outside of our school buildings, students use garden spaces to harvest food, buddy benches to read, and trees for burning energy with a quick climb. Even our animal friends enjoy their temporary stay.
A special thank you also goes out to our Maintenance and Operations Department for their beautification of all 75 of our 91 acres of grounds.
Bonus: To celebrate St. Clair Shores schools in our Aug/Sept Back to School issue, The Shores magazine will be featuring Mike Salem and Steve Tani from our Maintenance and Operations Department. These two gentlemen are dedicated, behind-the-scenes staff members who embody Lake Shore's school spirit and deserve the recognition. They are a big reason why Lake Shore's grounds are so pristine!
Celebration
One Final Walk
Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead. Congratulations Class of 2024 from Lake Shore High School!
Lake Shore Public Schools has recognized the achievements of our Class of 2024 as they emerge in our society as leaders.
We have attempted to support this class by honoring them with aerial photos of our ‘24 buses, personal lawn signs stationed along 13 Mile, graduate name displays on our marquee signs at all buildings and on the stadium big screen, social media campaigns, postcard mailings, Senior video and walk, Decision Day, celebratory Honors Ceremony, prom, scholarship recipient announcements, and tomorrow's in-person graduation.
Students were provided with a carnation during their walk through Lake Shore High School, Kennedy Middle School, Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, and Violet Elementary to gift to a staff member who they had a special connection with. See video clip.
Senior Charles Roberts gave his favorite teacher, Mrs. Bishoping, his flower. He said, "In 8th grade, we always hung out together at lunch and formed a close bond." Mrs. Bishoping selected Charles as the person she wanted to write her special postcard to.
Senior Nora Smith located her little sister Caroline, who is a 4th grader at Masonic Heights Elementary; They greeted each other with a big embrace.
Senior Reese Sparks, a graduate from L'Anse Creuse High School North and Alexis Pouttu, a graduate from Lakeview High School, didn't miss the opportunity to see their former 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Grassi. These young ladies joined the 190 Shorian graduates in their walk because truly Once a Shorian, always a Shorian!
In addition, staff, at all levels, have taught invaluable lessons of courage and commitment, reaching out to share care and concern. It is a great day to be Shorian!
Top Ten
There are 190 Lake Shore High School graduates embarking on the next chapter of their story. The hours of blood, sweat, and tears that you've put into Lake Shore hasn't gone unnoticed.
Graduation is a milestone in anyone's life. It shouldn't matter what grade it is: Kindergarten, middle school, high school, college. It is absolutely important to encourage each other, and never stop learning.
A special shoutout to our Top Ten!
Seniors have left a legacy as 10 have signed their letters-of-intent to play sports at the collegiate level. They chose the color pink to represent them. Their motto is "Nothing we do changes the past - everything we do changes the future." The lawn sign is an announcement to the entire community that a graduate lives here. It means this senior has earned at least 27.5 credits and has successfully completed 13 years of school. It is a symbol for the late night study sessions, athletic competitions, and/or bonds with forever friends. More importantly, it is a statement that the child has Lake Shore blood.
You’re a Shorian, and you’re ready to continue making a difference. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
Bonus: Brightest and Best is WXYZ's 45-year tradition recognizing the academic achievements of graduating seniors from high schools across metro Detroit.
They are proud to publicly recognize southeast Michigan high school graduates for their academic excellence. Congratulations to Lake Shore’s Thomas Kulpa. You have reached the top of your class: https://www.wxyz.com/brightestandbest
NLHS and LSACE Graduation
North Lake High School’s Class of 2024 and Lake Shore Adult & Community Education High School Completion Program celebrated their graduation with their families; Many smiles and tears of joy will be exchanged!
This sign is an announcement to the entire community that a graduate lives here. It means this Senior has earned at least 20 credits at North Lake High School and has successfully completed 13 years of school. It is a symbol for the late night study sessions, athletic competitions, and/or bonds with forever friends. More importantly, it is a statement that the child has Lake Shore blood.
In addition to this milestone, Student Council began a new and exciting chapter for future students at North Lake—offering volunteer opportunities and ways to represent and support the students. North Lake High School's Student Council has so many reasons to be proud of their work. They ran a basket raffle fundraiser and earned enough to purchase a popcorn maker, passed out Valentine's day candy (that was attached to uplifting/encouraging messages) to fellow students, met with Dr. DiPonio and Dr. Lewis about building initiatives, organized and hosted a senior class of 2024 outing, and volunteered at their Car Show fundraiser.
Congratulations Barracudas!
KMS Awards Ceremonies
At our Kennedy Middle School Celebrations, several standouts were recognized with Clipper Awards, the John Hills Award for Determination, Most Outstanding Student, NJHS participant, Honor Roll, WEB Leader, ECO Club Recycler, Etiquette Award, and individual course awards. We celebrated our 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade students at their Awards Ceremony! Start Strong, Stay Strong, Finish Strong is exactly what they did.
The transition to Kennedy Middle School from Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, Violet Elementary, or another elementary school may feel overwhelming. New school. New schedule. New friends. Over time, those 3 middle school years transform from anxiety to excitement. It is the atmosphere at this special school where students learn to adapt, develop skills of independence and responsibility, and prepare for new opportunities.
Maureen Ferguson, mother of 6th grader Kaitlyn, is so proud of her daughter. She explained, "Kaitlyn made the A&B Honor Roll, plays flute in the KMS band, and is a kind and funny kid. She even plays volleyball and tennis for fun outside of school. She tried new things and made new friends this year."
Thank you Mr. Johnson, Mr. Gaffigan, and Ms. Kubiak for your leadership, kindness, and extraordinary patience as you helped these students face a number of academic and social challenges. Middle school is difficult to navigate, especially when kids are forming their identities, but they did it with class!
Bonus: Our 6th graders enjoyed Kona Ice and playing outside games!
5th Grade Celebrations
At our 5th Grade Celebrations, we celebrate students' citizenship, creativity, academics and attendance. Our Masonic Heights Elementary, Rodgers Elementary, Violet Elementary students were called to the stage to receive their certificates and a proper send off.
We recognized the special programs that were offered at each building and the students who led them. Awards may have included Presidential Excellence, Safety Patrol, Community Helper, Student Council, Choir, Science Olympiad, Positivity Project, Specials, and Principal's Choice.
At Masonic Heights, Emma Becovic was given the Principal's Award for her All-Around Excellence.
At Rodgers, Emilia Muller, Addyson Gray, Loretta Beafore, and Aubry Graczyk were given the Principal's Awards!
At Violet, Alex Bakotich and Henli Jacks were given Principal's Awards!
Ms. Grassi described Alex as someone who truly embodies what it means to be a Violet All-Star. He is dedicated to his school work and is always up for a new challenge. He is loyal to his friends and classmates, while not compromising his integrity. He is competitive inside and out of the classroom, while also staying humble. His bright smile is often seen by many.
She continued with these words about Henli. She said, "She consistently and quietly leads with her heart. Henli can often be found working at her desk, motivated and dedicated to her own learning. However, she spends equally as much time helping out her peers. Henli is a trustworthy student, classmate, and friend. She always includes others in conversations, group projects, or even games out on the playground. Her friendship is valued by many."
There is nothing that they can't do except stay in elementary school forever. It is time to move on to middle school and continue to demonstrate your strong work ethic and commitment to serving others.

Kindergarten Celebrations
Congratulations! These are your final day of school; New beginnings occur in less than 3 months with our newest Kindergarten class.
We celebrated our students’ early milestones at our Kindergarten celebrations. Staff cheered, danced, and waved at Class of 2036 with admiration. Don’t blink. These imaginative, carefree souls will soon walk across the stage to receive their high school diploma; In fact, we recognized our Class of 2024 with graduate name displays on our marquee signs at all buildings!
We have watched you learn and grow, changing from day to day. We are excited to see your progression as you continue to move forward. Congratulations to the Class of 2036! Keep dreaming about becoming a real life superhero or princess and conquering this world with your mighty lego creations.
On behalf of our Lake Shore faculty and staff, thank you for your unwavering support and adaptability as we cross the finish line together. We are so proud of all 3,339 students for all that you have accomplished in the past 180 days. Seniors, your end of a story is the beginning of many.
Research has shown a 20-30 percent loss of learning during the summer. Rest, play, and continue to sharpen your saw!
LSECC Graduates
We celebrate preschool graduates from the Lake Shore Early Childhood Center with singing, dancing, and a celebratory picnic! For the next 13 years, we hope your child is part of our school system where he or she will be encouraged to discover their dreams and push to achieve those goals.
Let Your Child's Career with Lake Shore Begin with Us is the slogan we like to use as we welcome families to our childcare facility.
Upon entry, visitors feel connected to Lake Shore Public Schools and Saint Clair Shores because of the nautical themes in both the soft shades of blue color scheme, artifacts such as a piece of driftwood found in Whitefish Pointe, and thematic room names. This reflects the local city lifestyle and honors the schools inside Shorian Nation.
For example, the room names are as follows:
Infant room: Mini Clippers
Transition/Young Toddler room: Shorianettes
Toddler room: Maritime Mates
3-year-old Preschool room: Saint Clair Skippers
4-year-old Preschool room: Junior Mariners
In addition, we have partnered with BrightWheel, a software company that makes daily recording keeping for childcare centers quick and easy, to bring our record keeping up into the 21st century.
Most importantly, we are implementing High Scope curriculum, which includes developmentally appropriate goals and objectives for children within four main categories of interest: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language, to improve the quality of instruction.

Carol Peterson said, "Some of my best memories have been in the last 3 years working at KMS with some of the best Principals & Staff! I also have many great memories from my 9 years working at Rodgers Elementary!"
Joan Grassi shared, "As I reflect on my 26 years in Lake Shore I have so many fond memories it is hard to choose just one. As a classroom teacher, I always loved the moments when I knew a student was beginning to understand a concept I was trying to teach. Those true lightbulb moments were what made teaching so rewarding. I loved reading aloud to my students, creating special projects in the classroom, teaching math, and watching my students perform; something that always chokes me up. I have loved the relationships built with so many of the wonderful Lake Shore families who have shared their children with me.
I have loved being the principal of Violet. It has been the most rewarding and challenging aspect of my career. The students have brought much joy, laughter, hugs, and kindness to my days. I am grateful for all those moments. I've served a staff of caring individuals who believe that teaching students to become good, kind citizens is just as important as the content that they teach. I feel blessed and grateful for my career as a Violet All-Star!"
Thank you for your 344 years of collective service to this district. As this chapter of your life ends, may a new and exceptional one begin.
Athletics
Athletics Website
We have built an online home for our athletic department. Our goal is to bring our athletic programs to life by sharing schedules, scores, and social media while ensuring our athletes get the promotion they deserve. Visit the Shorian Sports website for 24/7/365 access to the information you have always wanted and follow along with our sports action.
We have partnered with Kroger to help fund our athletics. Please read this letter from our Athletic Coordinator Rich Bowers.
In addition, follow @ShorianSports on X for access to live sports updates from your favorite coaches and teams!
We believe a balance of academics and athletics creates a well-rounded student. Students who participate in sports not only gain the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle, they also learn lessons about sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, respect, and knowing how to win and lose.
