MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Students are the future of Roseburg
Last month I shared with you how our school district is building pathways for students to grow here, learn here and work here. Our students can follow paths that lead directly from Roseburg High School and Umpqua Community College to family-wage local careers. And for those who pursue higher education beyond Roseburg, we want them to know this community welcomes them back with meaningful, well-paying career opportunities waiting here at home.
The amount of talent our students possess is incredible. As a community, we can develop and harness this deep pool of potential, ensuring our students thrive while securing the future success of Roseburg. I hear stories all the time about our incredible students. From flight attendants praising our traveling RHS band members to medical staff collaborating with our nursing students — “respectful,” “responsible” and “capable” are common descriptions.
History shows that communities thrive when they invest in their young people. Roseburg is no different. Read more.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT
RHS celebrates the arts
Roseburg High School students recently gathered for their annual Arts Assembly, a celebration of music, performance and visual arts. The event brought creative energy to the campus and highlighted the incredible talents within our student body.
Elementary students present their cooking skills
Eight talented student chefs from across our elementary schools were selected from dozens of contenders to compete in this year’s Future Chef Competition, sponsored by Sodexo. Held in the Sunnyslope cafeteria, the event gave these young culinary stars the chance to showcase their creativity, cooking skills and love of food. Each student wore a chef’s hat and coat, prepared their dish, and presented their recipe to a panel of judges. From presentation and taste to originality and healthiness, the competition was full of flavor and fun.
Students pursue a career in firefighting
Roseburg High School students in the Fire Science program, a partnership between RHS and Umpqua Community College, are gaining real-world firefighting experience thanks to a training house provided by the school district. The program is one of several expanding career pathways being developed to ensure students can cost-effectively earn certifications and degrees and enter high-wage, high-demand jobs right here in Douglas County.
FROM THE STEAM TEAM: CALLING ALL STEAMOLOGISTS!
Our Elementary School STEAM Team shares the latest updates on science, technology, engineering, arts and math education around the district.
The STEAM Team is visiting elementary schools across the district with an engaging lesson all about the solar system. Students use a 100-inch scale model to explore the vast distances between planets and learn how scientists use models to understand space. After placing each planet in orbit, students read fun facts from NASA-inspired cards and use evidence to determine the correct order. They also get to extend their thinking by placing dwarf planets and asteroids based on new data, such as how long it takes each object to orbit the sun. This hands-on activity helps students think critically, make observations, and understand how science models work, all while having a blast exploring our solar system!
COMMUNITY PARTNER SHOUT-OUTS
Fremont performs music at the courthouse
Fremont Middle School's Choir and Chamber Ensemble program performed at the 4th Annual Music at the Courthouse Concert. This event allows our students to showcase their talents to employees at the courthouse and other county officials before our Douglas County Commissioners present them with the "National Music in Our Schools Month" proclamation, a May tradition. We thank our commissioners for acknowledging and celebrating the positive impact music programs have on our students and our community.
K-5 learners practice healthy habits
Healthy Kids Outreach Program (HKOP) is a Mercy Foundation program that serves children throughout Douglas County by providing dental screenings and treatments, health education, and connection to care. Through a hands-on lesson, students discovered the differences between refined and natural sugars and demonstrate good brushing and flossing skills. Thank you to HKOP for helping our students build healthy habits!
RHS students tour water treatment facility
Roseburg High School students recently toured the Roseburg Urban Sanitary Authority (RUSA) to learn about in-demand and well-paying career opportunities in water and wastewater management, a field that plays a critical role in protecting public health and the environment. They got a close-up look at the tools and technology used to inspect, clean and treat water, while learning about the many career paths available in this field. These include opportunities in engineering, biology, chemistry, natural resources, business and more. Thank you to the team at RUSA for welcoming our students, sharing your knowledge, and helping us connect classroom learning with real-world careers.
