13 May 2022 Newsletter
Rosehill College
From the Principal,
Tēnā koutou katoa,
With Term 2 underway, it is good to see our winter sports teams playing their first games. Thank you to all our coaches and managers, whether you are parents, teachers or community members, who enable our teams to participate in their competitions. I wish all teams success and fair play throughout the season.
We are looking ahead to what might come next – not just from COVID-19 but the upcoming winter season and illnesses that may come with it. We have been mostly sheltered from exposure to flu in the last two years, and health experts are concerned about our lower immunity to flu. This winter there is the very real possibility of getting the flu and COVID-19 within a short space of time. This can lead to very serious illness and high mortality rates.
As always, we want to keep our ākonga and kaiako as safe as possible from the harms from illness and to have as many ākonga learning on site as we can. All those actions we already have in place to reduce the risk of harm from COVID-19 will also help to prevent seasonal illnesses.
Changes to schools’ planning and reporting, which were legislated in the Education and Training Act 2020, come into effect on 1 January 2023. Instead of a charter, schools and kura must publish a three-year Strategic Plan, an Annual Implementation Plan, and an Annual Report. Schools and kura must work in partnership with their communities to develop their plans so they reflect local needs and priorities. Throughout May 2022 the Ministry of Education (MOE) are undertaking initial engagement with whānau and community to hear what you think the planning and reporting process should look like. Your views will help decide what should be compulsory as regulations versus what should be guidance, so that strategic plans are flexible enough to meet local needs. To this end, the MOE are enlisting your feedback/assistance through this questionnaire Whānau and community survey
Stopping the spread of flu
The following is from the Ministry of Health:
Influenza – or the flu – is a virus that spreads quickly from person to person. Symptoms include fever, chills, aches, runny nose, a cough and stomach upset. Immunisation is your best defence against the flu. In 2022, flu vaccinations are free for:
- pregnant people
- people aged 65 years and over
- Māori and Pacific people aged 55 years and over
- people who have a long-term medical condition like diabetes, asthma, or a heart condition (ages 6 months+)
- children 4 years old or younger who have been in hospital with respiratory illness such as asthma.
Follow basic hygiene practices:
- Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds and dry them for 20 seconds – or use an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Don’t share drinks.
- Avoid crowded places.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze – then put the tissue in a lined bin.

Staff Only Day Tuesday 17 May
As part of the implementation of the NCEA changes the Ministry of Education agreed to allocate staff only days for professional development and implementation planning. Four Staff Only Days have been allocated to 2022 and to minimise the impact on student learning we have chosen Tuesdays when students only have 4 periods of learning for our Staff Only Days. The first Staff Only Day is on Tuesday 17 May. The school will be closed for instruction.
Māori and Pasifika Homework Centre
This Wednesday we start our Homework Centre in the Library on Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5pm. Teachers from a variety of subjects will be available to answer questions and assist students from all year levels. All students are welcome.
NZ Sign Language week - Six60 Pepeha Song Challenge winner!
NZSL is Essential
The theme for New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Week 2022 is NZSL is Essential. The meaning behind this theme is multifaceted. As you are aware, the word “essential” is well used these days and this puts a spotlight on essential workers who are Deaf. As well as the fact that NZSL is essential for Deaf people in education, health, workplaces and to be able to participate equally in society.
This week students in their Tutor Groups took part in the Six60 Pepeha Song Challenge hosted by Deaf Aotearoa, where your are tasked with learning to sign sing a small verse of Six60's song Pepeha. The winning Tutor Group will get House points!
These videos will be judged next week and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be announced in next weeks newsletter!
I hope all of the Tutor Groups enjoyed learning a little bit of sign language and sign singing! If you would like to learn more about NZSL, head over to the Deaf Aotearoa website for more information! Thank you Deaf Aotearoa for giving us this opportunity to learn more about your language and culture!
Thank you from the Interact Group!
The Interact group wants to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who bought tickets for our Easter raffle. The winner of the big prize was Annalise Doncaster.
We raised $338 which will be donated to Women's refuge.
Bullying-Free New Zealand Week 2022
Spoken Word Workshops
We have two spoken word workshops coming up.
The first is on 20th May. If students wish to attend they need to email Ms Simmons at j.simmons@rosehillcollege.school.nz
The second one is on 25th May, and that is reserved for those who will be going further and entering the Heats for Word the Frontline.
School Ball - A Night in Tokyo
Preparations for the School Ball are well underway, and it is timely to draw parents’ and caregivers’ attention to other functions that may occur on the night of the School Ball, either before or after. Large pre- or after ball functions are not to be held. Small, at home gatherings of friends with families are acceptable. If a student arrives at the ball showing signs of alcohol or drug intoxication, we may refuse entry to the student and contact parents/caregivers to collect the student.
If you are considering hosting any function at any time for students, please consider the legal implications for you. The sale of alcohol to minors, including by the sale of a ticket to a function at which alcohol will be served to them, is illegal. The police will take action to prevent such gatherings from happening, even at the time of students boarding buses to the venue. They have indicated, in previous years, that prosecutions may be brought against those who are responsible for the organisation of such functions, with large fines a possible consequence.
The annual School Ball for Years 12 and 13 students takes place on Saturday June 11 and we look forward to a most enjoyable function.
