From Blue Ribbon to Bold Future:
Principal Ryan Murray on Oak Grove School
OCTOBER 2024
Oak Grove School has been named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious recognition is awarded to schools that demonstrate overall academic excellence and sustained student achievement. We sat down with Principal Ryan Murray to ask him a few questions about how this honor reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to student success and community involvement.
What Makes Oak Grove Special
As Principal Murray explains, Oak Grove’s success is deeply rooted in the strength of its community. "Our families, staff, and community members are incredibly supportive of our students. They want Oak Grove to be successful not only academically but in athletics, extracurriculars, and everything in between. Our school is truly a hub for the Green Oaks community," he shared.
This sense of community is one of the pillars that sets Oak Grove apart as a high-performing school. Murray credits the dedication of the staff and the drive of the students, who are eager to engage and excel. "We’re fortunate to have passionate and driven teachers who create an environment where students can thrive. Our students are engaged, curious, and constantly striving for success, both inside and outside the classroom."
Innovative Programs and Initiatives
Oak Grove’s success is supported by a variety of programs designed to foster both academic achievement and personal growth. One of these key initiatives is "Classroom Meetings," which start each day by building relationships among students. "This program focuses on connection and community," explained Principal Murray. "Students greet one another, share thoughts, and engage in activities that set a positive tone for the day, creating a strong sense of belonging."
Oak Grove School also supports student interests with innovative extracurriculars like yoga and coding. These programs teach creativity, problem-solving, and well-being while helping students build confidence and explore new talents. By engaging in activities that resonate with them, students strengthen their connection to school and enhance their academic performance.
By focusing on the whole child—recognizing strengths, talents, and interests both in and out of the classroom—Oak Grove empowers students to succeed academically. When students feel valued for their unique contributions, they develop the confidence and motivation to engage in learning, which builds resilience and a growth mindset critical for long-term success.
Celebrating Student Success
Oak Grove students consistently excel in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities, demonstrating the school’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. From IESA state athletes to spelling bee champions, Oak Grove students rise to every challenge. Recently, students were recognized for their achievements in band competitions, art contests, and even community service, like when a local Girl Scout troop, supported by the school, revamped the recycling program.
"At Oak Grove, we celebrate success in all its forms," Murray emphasized. "Whether it’s on the field, in the classroom, or through community initiatives, we make sure our students feel proud of their accomplishments. Every achievement builds confidence and encourages them to aim higher."
At Soaring Eagles Assemblies, the whole school community celebrates student achievements, big and small. "Soaring Eagles allows us to celebrate student success across academics, extracurriculars, and personal growth," said Murray. By recognizing their contributions to our school culture, we’re fostering global citizens who are confident and engaged."
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Tradition of Excellence
While the Blue Ribbon Award is a significant milestone, Principal Murray views it as motivation to continue raising the bar. "This recognition emboldens us to push even further. Our student needs are evolving, and we want to make sure every student has the opportunity to succeed. We’ll continue to follow best practices, update resources, and maintain our mindset of growth and agility."
Principal Murray is particularly excited about the upcoming official ceremony in Washington, D.C., where Oak Grove will be recognized on a national stage. "It’s an honor to represent our school and community at this level. We’re proud to share our success with the country, and we’ll make sure that everyone—our staff, students, and families—feels a part of this celebration."
