Supporting Immigrants in Schools

These workshops are centered on a four-part video series that illustrates successful practices in creating safe, welcoming environments for immigrant students and families. Each session is based on Comprehensive Educator Modules developed by CUNY-IIE around the Supporting Immigrants in Schools Video Series videos: Key Immigration Issues, Immigration in Elementary Schools, Immigration in Secondary Schools, and Educating Refugee and Immigrant Students. The goal of this series is to help educators learn, act, and advocate in the classroom.

This video for all PreK-12 educators and leaders describes registration guidelines and immigration laws, and offers suggestions for welcoming new students, including unaccompanied minors, responding to ICE, as well as other ways that educators can be advocates for students and families.

This video shows how educators can address refugee issues, inside and outside the classroom. It also describes steps that school districts can take to ensure that immigrant families are included in their children’s education, and highlights students’ suggestions of ways that teachers can improve their schooling experiences.

This video shows how a 1st/2nd grade bilingual teacher brings current immigration issues into her classroom through literature. The video also shows how schools can collaborate with immigrant advocacy organizations, and make stronger connections with families.

This video highlights a high school Dream Team, and shows how other schools can start their own club for immigrant justice. It also shows how a school counselor ensures that undocumented students have access to information about attending and funding college.

Communities and schools are shaped and strengthened by the migration of people and ideas across the globe.

The City University of New York - Initiative on Immigration and Education (CUNY-IIE) creates opportunities for educational stakeholders to learn from immigrant students, families, and educators directly impacted by restrictive immigration policies and educational inequality. We aim to develop multimodal and multilingual resources that center the strengths of mixed status immigrant communities that include undocumented, refugee, and asylum-seeking members. At CUNY-IIE, educators, researchers, families and local leaders work together to learn about, from, and with immigrant communities, act in ways that center our shared humanity regardless of legal status, and advocate for equitable policies and opportunities.

The purpose of Mid-West RBERN is to build capacity within school communities to cultivate strong leaders, high quality, meaningful instruction, and welcoming, inclusive environments for Multilingual Learners (MLLs). We are committed to developing partnerships that result in equitable educational outcomes for MLLs by capitalizing on the backgrounds, cultures, and strengths of diverse students and educators.
