NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3 | WEEK 2 | 11 AUGUST 2022
Dear Parents and Staff
As we come to the end of the AFL season each year, a few players decide to hang up their boots and turn their focus towards endeavours other than chasing an inflated piece of leather around a ground each weekend. Two outstanding players from our Western Australian teams, Josh Kennedy and David Mundy have made this decision this year. I suppose you're wondering where this is leading to when the most significant event on our school calendar is this weekend’s Confirmation for many of our Year Six students. Well, let me try to pull some similarities from the two seemingly different events.
Both of the abovementioned AFL players were born with the talents (gifts) to be excellent footballers, as were many others. So why did these players become so good at their craft and others didn’t? There are many factors, but, I believe, a large part of the reason is that these two nurtured and developed these God given talents through their commitment and dedication coupled with the support of others around them.
So, how does this relate to the Sacrament of Confirmation? When we receive the Sacrament, we all receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The part that the Gifts will play in guiding us throughout our lives is dependent upon how we, just like the AFL players, nurture and develop them and how much support we receive in doing this. So, whether the students want to be a great sportsperson, artist or an outstanding advocate for what is right and just (or all of these), they must work to develop their Gifts rather than wait for them to appear magically.
I look forward to joining with the Candidates and their families at the celebration on Saturday and ask you keep all of us in your prayers.
CSPWA AWARDS
As was reported in last week’s newsletter, our school’s P&F was nominated as a finalist in the Building Positive School Communities section of the Catholic School Parents Western Australia Awards which were announced last Friday evening. Whilst our school wasn’t the chosen recipient of the Award, I am so proud of all that they do to make our school a welcoming place and a hub of community for all of us.
At the Awards evening I was also nominated in the building positive Catholic School Communities section. I was very surprised and humbled to have been announced as the recipient of the Principal Award of Excellence in this section. I am very thankful to the P&F for my nomination and for the many wonderful messages of support from the community that I have received since the announcement.
BOOK WEEK
Mrs Mack and her Library Monitors have been working hard to ensure that everything is ready for our Book Week Parade next Tuesday morning and that there will be activities for the children to participate in throughout the week. There have been hundreds of entries submitted in the competitions that have been running over the past week and Mrs Mack is finding it very difficult to choose the winners who will receive a book prize donated by Cassie Rowe MLA, our very generous Member for Belmont.
MERCY IN ACTION
I am so proud of Charlotte Doyle from Year Six who has committed to have her head shaved in support of cancer. Please see her note below and support her fundraising efforts.

Yr 3 CLASS NEWS
Kaya! Term 3 in Year 3 has been eventful so far.
We have been learning about Aboriginal people and culture. We started by learning that NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This has tied into our HASS lessons on Aboriginal culture this term. Did you know that sacred sites are places that have special meaning under Aboriginal tradition? Sacred sites are places within the natural landscape such as rocks, lakes, and trees. A very famous sacred site is Uluru. We created some art works of Uluru using oil pastels and paint to create our backgrounds and texta and crayons for Uluru.
The Dreaming is the heart of Aboriginal culture. The Dreaming is a set of beliefs and laws that shapes life. Each cultural group has its own Dreaming. One of the ways that Aboriginal culture is passed down from generation to generation is through story telling. Dreaming stories tell people how the world and everything in it was created. They also help to keep the connection between people and country and past and present strong. We read many Dreaming stories such as How the Birds Got Their Colours and Tiddalick the Frog and then had a go at writing our own stories.
We have also learnt that Aboriginal people told stories orally or by using symbols. We learnt about different Aboriginal symbols and painted them to create some simple stories. We look forward to learning more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and going on our excursion to the WA museum Boola Bardip this week.

SPORTS NEWS
Dress up your bike/shoes day - Tuesday, 9 August
On Tuesday, students had the option to come to school and dress up their bike, scooter or shoes for the day. It's been awhile since we've had some sunshine and Tuesday was no different with wet weather greeting our students in the morning. As this was an optional event and we had postponed last week, we decided to leave the day as planned. It was still great to see some very excited students dressing up their shoes, bikes and scooters for the day. There were also some very resilient parents joining their kids in the not so ideal conditions, even some getting their morning run in with their children. Many thanks to the fantastic Year 6 helpers who came early in the wet to help give out raffle tickets, take photos, give out prizes, stickers and help greet everyone coming to school. This created a great atmosphere for students coming to school and the ringing of bike bells were heard until the class bell - this would have been welcome relief to teachers setting up their classes in the morning. Unfortunately, due to the constant rain we had to cancel our planned obstacle course, but we will look for another day in the term when we can provide this option again for our students.
