March 2023 Hawk Talk
That same evening, our Maple Hill Community Club hosted a family night at Skate Express in Chino. I wanted to give a huge shout-out to our MHCC exec board for helping to put this event together. Also, thank you to all the families who helped donate to our Fall fundraiser, which helped to cover the cost of student tickets to this event. This fun-filled night was filled with so many memories that will be cherished. We are blessed at Maple Hill to be a part of a community of families who believe in the importance of education and the family's part in supporting their children in their educational journey.
As we enter March, don't forget to turn your clocks forward an hour on March 12th for Daylight Savings. Below you will find information about what is happening at Maple Hill this month. There are also helpful links and resources for families.
With Love,
Mrs. McNeil

March Hawk Character Trait: Fairness
Our SEL enrichment lesson this month will be on fairness. We will have a meaningful discussion on how your child can act and play fairly. We will also be discussing how fair might look for different people. For example, a younger sibling might have different chores than their older sibling because that is what is fair for them. It is so important for our kiddos to understand how to be fair, even when a grown-up isn’t watching. Some great discussions to have with your child about being fair are: taking turns and waiting in line, making sure rules are followed in the classroom, on the playground, and during games, sharing community materials evenly, and being honest. Thank you so much for your support!
Family Book Guide and Discussion Ideas:
Reading books about what fairness looks like and sounds like can start up great conversations about equality, justice, and of course fairness.
Here are some literature suggestions:

- 2nd-3rd: Fair is Fair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qrEyjVMajY
- 4th-5th: Fair is Fair, Isn’t It?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSsIG7Sxe8E&t=48s
Book Discussion Ideas:
Discuss what it means to be compassionate and understanding of others.
Identify ways to be inclusive and why that would make others feel good.
Explore the difference between needs and wants.
Family Fairness Activity Ideas:
Here are some activities you can do as a family that shows an understanding of being fair:
Board or Card Game: Playing a structured game with rules teaches kids to accept defeat and win graciously
