Broad Run High School's Monthly Newsletter January, 2023
Principal's Message
BRHS Families,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a nice winter break.
As you may know, on December 8 one of our beloved teachers, John Costello, tragically passed in a vehicle accident. Coach Costello was at Broad Run High School as a teacher and coach for 25 years and a positive influence for a generation. Coach and his family have lived in our community, and his four children are Broad Run alumni. Coach was planning to retire in the spring. Our sincere condolences go out to his family as we continue to honor his legacy at Broad Run.
In the coming weeks, we will begin our course selection process. Teachers and counselors are meeting about courses being offered, and, in early February, students in grades 9-11 will begin the process to select their courses for the 23-24 school year. A significant amount of time is spent on this process. I want to encourage everyone to sign up for classes with thought. Please understand that once our process is completed, changes may not be possible. We remind students and parents course selection is much easier in the spring than in the fall. Please let any teachers, counselors, or administration know how we can help.
Seniors will receive Capstone information in the coming weeks. Please continue to check the Class of 2023 web site for updates. We will meet with seniors on February 8 to go over important dates for the spring.
As always, thank you for all you do in support of the Broad Run communit.

Ninth Grade History Classes Immersed in King Tut
The 9th Grade History classes (Susbilla/Abdalla/Langpaul) went to the National Geographic Museum in Washington, DC on January 5 and 6 to see the exhibit featuring the 100 year anniversary since the discovery of King Tut. Students walked through the immersive exhibit and got to see a replica of his burial chamber and learn about his childhood and reign as well as his mummification process.
Women's Studies Class Shares Original Children's Books
Women's Studies students went to the Early Childhood class to share a children's book they created based on Rad American Women A-Z: Rebels, Trailblazers, and Visionaries who Shaped Our History . . . and Our Future! by Kate Schatz.
A Cup of Spartan Begins the Year with Flavor
It's been a successful start for our student run coffee shop, A Cup Of Spartan.
The students who work at the coffee shop have been working hard on creating in house events. They introduced new Mocha flavors as well as their specialty hot chocolate drinks. During the month of January, they will offer Peppermint Mochas and Avalanche Hot Chocolate.
The barista staff are learning new job skills. One of the new skills is learning the school hallways while delivering. A Cup Of Spartan prides itself on its delivery service. If you see a barista on a delivery, be sure to say hello and let them know how professional they look in the Cup Of Spartan t-shirt or apron!
A Cup Of Spartan will be hosting another fun event in February; stay tuned for more information on their Valentine Groovy Foody event. We would like to thank everyone for their support!
"Today's good mood is sponsored by coffee."
