October Focus: We Walk by Faith... in Understanding
Spiritual Reflection by Miss Sheila O'Callaghan
October is a good month to think about prayer. Let us see how many prayers we have committed to memory. Do you know the following prayers?
The Morning Offering
The Act of Contrition
Memorare
Prayer to Our Guardian Angel
How to Pray the Rosary
These are just a few prayers that we might commit to memory.
We have all read or heard about Blessed Carlo Acutis and his love and devotion to the Eucharist. He is an inspiration for all of us. This coming year we can look forward to his canonization. Remember to Walk By Faith. You too can become a saint.
There are several saints to celebrate this week. On Monday, October 14, we remember St. Callistus, Pope and Martyr. He was born a slave but was set free. When he was young he led a troubled life. However, he became a deacon a little later in life. Then he became a bishop, and finally, pope. Pope Callistus was always quick to forgive sinners.
On October 15, we remember St. Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church. When Teresa became a nun she wanted to live simply. She started new convents with new rules. Long ago the word “doctor” meant “teacher”. In 1970, 400 years after her death, Teresa was named a “doctor” of the church because of her excellent teaching. She was the first woman given this title by the Catholic Church.
We remember St. Hedwig on October 16. She was the Duchess of Silesia. This is now part of Germany and Poland. Hedwig and her husband were wealthy, but they lived simply. They raised their six children with much love.
St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr, is remembered on October 17. He learned about Jesus from the apostles. He became a bishop. Because of his love of Jesus and being a great Christian, he was arrested and sent to Rome to be executed. On his way to his death, he wrote letters to strengthen the faith of his people. His letters are among the treasures of the early church.
St. Luke, Evangelist, is celebrated on his feast day of October 18. Luke wrote the third gospel and the book called the Acts of the Apostles. Some people think that Luke was a doctor and an artist. They believe he traveled with Saint Paul and brought the good news of Jesus to people of many nations.
Please pray for the sick, especially Fr. Mink, Mrs. Miriam Harris, Oliver Conaty, and all the sick of our parish. Please continue to pray for Maureen Engelbert. Pray also for our Armed Forces and First Responders.
In Honor of Miss O
One of our school parents, Christopher James, father of two students at St. Ann School, is turning 50 and has decided to "celebrate" by challenging himself to run 50 laps (or 12.5 miles) at a local track. He's calling it 50 Laps Around The Sun.
He writes "I thought it would be great to do this as a charity fundraiser and I've chosen The Spirit of St. Francis Fund. This fund was initiated in honor of Sheila O'Callaghan, known to many as "Miss O," in celebration of her 50 years of service to The St. Ann School in Wilmington. The Spirit of St. Francis Fund helps embrace diversity and provide the opportunity for under-served families in our community to access a Catholic education. Thank you, Mr. James!

OCIA Invitation
Dear School Parents, Do you know a relative, friend, or co-worker who wants to know more about the Catholic faith? Is someone you know seeking to find the Lord in their life? Could that person be you? Or do you know an adult who was baptized Catholic but hasn't yet made his or her other sacraments of initiation? If so, please encourage them to "Seek the Lord while He may be found; call to Him, while He is still near."
The clergy of St. Ann Parish are happy to help school parents and other adults inquire about the Catholic Faith through the process called "The ORDER of Christian Initiation of Adults” (OCIA, formerly RCIA). It meets over a period of six months starting in October, once a week on Wednesdays in the school in Conference Room A from 6:30-7:30 p.m. In these sessions, we will explain the faith, invite questions, and help inquirers every step of the way, guiding them to discern the possibility of entering the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil on April 19, 2025.
Please email stannschurch@stannwilmington.com or call the parish office at 302-654-5519 for more information.

This week, we look forward to a visit from the Wilmington Fire Department! They will lead an assembly for students in K-5th grades on fire prevention and safety on 10/17. This partners well with on ongoing initiative we've got underway with the Delaware Volunteer Firefighter's Association to engage our students in a Fire Prevention Project that emphasizes safety and awareness.
Project Overview:
- Grades K-3: Students will create posters illustrating fire safety tips and prevention measures with specific fire topics per grade.

Submissions are due by October 24. Good luck, Mustangs!
