Audience: K-12 Physical Education Teachers
Comments from the 2023 training:
- I loved that we had the opportunity to be active and try new things alongside peers from other districts! It was key to have the space that GVSU allowed us to use so we could try the lessons to their fullest.
- I thought all sessions were presented well. Topic were relevant and useful. I would absolutely attend another "PE Recharged". I really appreciated the hands-on approach to each lesson taught.
- I really enjoyed the variety of topics, the location, and the staff who led it. All around a great day of PD.

- Healthy Self Collage: Have students create a collage that represents their health identity, including hobbies, favorite foods, and activities. This can be done digitally or with magazines and craft supplies.
- Personal Wellness Map: Students draw or write out a map of what they do to stay healthy in different areas of their lives (home, school, sports, etc.).
- Health Myths Debunked: Present common health myths and have students guess if they are true or false. Then, discuss the correct answers.
- Health Topic Stations: Set up different stations around the room with posters or materials on various health topics (nutrition, mental health, physical activity). Students rotate through the stations, noting down interesting facts or questions.

Michigan Model Updates for 4th & 5th Grade Teachers
Beginning on February 8, 2024, all teachers who have been trained in Michigan Model for Health and currently have a 4th & 5th grade license will be receiving access to both the regular curriculum and the HIV/STI prevention lesson at 4th grade. These have been combined into one license for ease of use by the Michigan Model site managers.
Please note: Unless you have attended the HIV/STI prevention training required by the state of Michigan to teach the HIV/STI prevention content, do not teach this lesson! There are many reminders and warnings about this within the curriculum. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at ssills@oaisd.org.
Physical Education Updates
NEW 2024 PHYSICAL EDUCATION STANDARDS
SHAPE America’s National Physical Education Standards define what a student should know and be able to do as result of a highly effective physical education program. States and local school districts across the country use the National Physical Education Standards to develop or revise existing standards, frameworks and curricula.
The new National Physical Education Standards — released in March 2024 after a multi-year revision process — provide a comprehensive framework for educators to deliver high-quality instruction and makes a positive difference in the health and well-being of every student.
