Oceanside High School Weekly Update
10/11/2024
The Pirate Way
Dear Oceanside Families,
As we conclude the first quarter today, I want to take a moment to reflect on the amazing progress we’ve made together. This has been a busy and productive few weeks, and your ongoing support has made all the difference in our success. We’ve seen students grow academically, socially, and personally—and we couldn’t be more proud of the resilience and commitment shown by our school community.
WASC Visit: A Positive Milestone
This week, we successfully wrapped up our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visit. The visiting team had the opportunity to observe our classrooms, meet with staff, students, and parents, and review the programs we have in place to ensure student success. Their feedback was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the strong sense of pride in our school and the many opportunities available for students to excel. This was a tremendous effort by everyone involved, and we should all feel proud of the accomplishments recognized during this important visit. Our ongoing commitment to excellence continues to shine through, and we will use the feedback to strengthen our school even further.
Pirate Achievement Day: Focusing on Progress and the Future
Next week, we are excited to host Pirate Achievement Day, an essential event focused on student progress and future readiness. Pirate Achievement Day isn’t just about celebrating current accomplishments—it’s about looking ahead to the future. We will host a Future Fair that introduces students to various post-secondary pathways, including college, career options, and technical training opportunities. This day is crucial for all students, whether they are thinking about college, entering the workforce, or exploring other post-secondary plans. It’s designed to give students the information and resources they need to take control of their future and set clear goals for life after high school.
During Pirate Achievement Day, students will learn about college and career readiness, explore post-secondary opportunities, and be encouraged to think about what lies ahead. We invite parents to talk to their students about their plans, dreams, and aspirations—and to use this event as a springboard for discussions about next steps after high school.
Continuing Our Journey: Hard Work and Community
As we move forward, I want to emphasize the importance of staying focused and working hard. The quarter may be over, but the learning never stops. We encourage students to keep up their efforts in both their academics and personal growth. Being part of this community means supporting each other and striving for greatness, both individually and collectively. Let’s continue to model that Pirate spirit of perseverance, determination, and care for one another.
Rest and Recharge: A Well-Deserved Break
After such a busy few weeks, I hope everyone can take this weekend to rest and recharge. Whether it’s catching up on sleep, spending quality time with family, or simply taking a moment to relax, it’s important to prioritize your well-being. Our students and staff have worked hard, and we want them to return next week ready to tackle new challenges with renewed energy.
Thank you, as always, for your unwavering support and dedication to making Oceanside High School the best it can be. Together, we create a community where every student can thrive.
Have a restful, safe, and enjoyable weekend! Go Pirates!
Warm regards,
Dr. Skyler M. Garrahy
Principal OHS
Pirate Sports Update
From the sports deck:
Cross country rolls in league cluster meet
Cross country plays an unusual math game when it comes to league competition.
Oceanside, which is a member of the Avocado League, combined with the Valley League for the first cluster meet of the season at Kit Carson Park last Friday.
The 11 boys and girls team compete in one large meet and the team with the lowest score against the other earns a win. For example, if a team scores lower than four teams, it gets four victories and if two others score lower than them, then it would be two loses.
For the Pirates girls team, Maila Guillen took the overall first place with a time of 19:50 over the dusty, rolling hills course in low 90-degree temperatures and high humidity. Caleigha Kelly (21:35) was the eighth-place finisher and Addison Ashby (22:41) was 14th. For its efforts, OHS earned wins over Carlsbad, San Marcos, Escondido, Fallbrook and Ramona.
For the boys, which had victories over Fallbrook and Escondido, Alexi Torres was 15th and freshman Buddy Espinoza (18:31) was 18th overall.
OHS PTSO
We are in urgent need of parents to step into Board Positions for next year. Please contact us if you are interested. PTSO is volunteer run and needs new parents to step in as others "graduate". Our organization fills a lot of gaps in our community to support clubs, CTE pathways, students and our amazing teachers and staff.
For those new to OHS, PTSO includes Parents, Teachers and Students to support the school community. Some of our goals are to promote parent interaction, support the faculty and staff and promote student achievement. Each year is a bit different so we welcome your ideas on ways we can support the school. The donations we receive and the funds we raise go toward staff appreciation events, teacher and club grants, student events, and more. We work closely with our principal Mrs.Garrahy, the administrators and counseling team to be responsive to current needs. All members have a vote in how our funds are used and we have a few openings for leadership positions if you want to give some time.
If you would like to join us or renew your membership for the year, please fill out the form here: OHS PTSO Form . If you are interested in volunteering or serving on the board, please indicate that on the form.
Whether you participate in meetings or not, you can support our efforts with a tax-deductible donation. Please go here: PTSO Donation Page (Paypal or CC) or use our new venmo @osideptso. And please join us for our restaurant nights throughout the year.
We typically meet monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Stay connected with us by joining our Facebook group @Oceanside High School PTSO Parents for Pirates or following us on Instagram @piratesptso. We also encourage you to choose Oceanside High School PTSO as your designated charity in your AmazonSmile account. https://smile.amazon.com/ch/77-0684642
