Reminder: Cell Phone and Smart Watch Policy
We kindly remind everyone of our school policy regarding cell phones and smartwatches. While we recognize their importance in staying connected, all devices must remain off and stored away during school hours. This ensures a distraction-free learning environment for all students.
If you need to reach your child during the day, please contact the school office, and we’ll relay the message promptly. Thank you for helping us maintain a focused and productive atmosphere at school!
Youth Truth School Climate Survey - Survey Closes November 22, 2024
Dear Parent or Guardian,
We are asking for ~15 minutes of your time to complete an online survey that will help us improve your child’s school. We have asked YouthTruth – a nonprofit organization that supports hundreds of schools and districts across the country – to conduct an anonymous survey on our behalf.
Please take the survey before it closes at midnight on November 22
https://ytsurvey.org/newbergfamily24
Please note:
- The survey needs to be completed in one sitting.
- We ask that one member of each household fill out the survey.
- If you have more than one child who attends the same school, you may respond to the survey multiple times - one time per child.
- If you write any comments, please do not include your name or anything else that might identify you. Your responses are anonymous, and they will be combined with the responses of other parents and guardians before being shared back with school and district leadership.
⠀We sincerely thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Your response is incredibly valuable to us. If you have any questions about the survey, or our plans for how we will use your feedback, please contact Jillian Felizarta felizartaj@newberg.k12.or.us .
Sincerely,
Tim Lauer
Principal

Vision Screening - November 18, 2024
Newberg School District is pleased to announce that we will once again be collaborating with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation (OLSHF) to provide vision screening to all students in grades K-8. Vision screenings will take place at Mabel Rush on November 18, 2024.
Vision Screening Information
The OLSHF will be using the Spot Vision Screener. It is a handheld, portable device designed to quickly and easily detect vision issues in people from 6 months through adulthood. This technology uses a special camera, so instead of being required to read and recite letters, students look into the device as it takes some pictures. Based on those images, it will notify clinicians if it detects potential vision problems.
The SPOT vision screen is 97% accurate.
The Spot Vision Screener can detect the following conditions accurately:
- Myopia (nearsightedness)
- Hyperopia (farsightedness)
- Astigmatism (blurred vision)
- Anisometropía (unequal refractive power)
- Strabismus (eye misalignment)
- Anisocoria (unequal pupil size)
The total screen takes approximately 5 seconds per student. You will receive the results of the screening in 2-3 weeks following the screening. The school district will document the vision finding and notify the parent of the result.
For questions: Please Call Annie Berger, RN Newberg School District Nurse 503-554-5363
If you do not want your student to participate, please sign and return the form linked below TO THE OFFICE no later than 11/15/2024. Forms are also available in the school office.
Dental Sealants
Dental professionals from Capital Dental will visit Mabel Rush Elementary School during the week of December 2-5, 2024, to perform free dental checkups and treatments. The checkups will include teeth examinations for cavities and other oral health issues. In addition, they will be offering safe and temporary cavity prevention methods such as fluoride coatings and dental sealants. These sealants protect the back teeth where cavities commonly form and are effective, but may need to be replaced over time.
For early tooth decay, Silver Fluoride treatments will be available. These treatments are known to stop or heal decay. Protective restorations, a painless and temporary filling, will also be provided to protect teeth until permanent solutions can be applied.
If you would like your child to receive these services, parents or guardians need to sign the permission form that was recently sent home with students. A copy of the permission form, along with more specific, information, can also be found at the link below:
Capital Dental Information Packet and Permission Form
We encourage all of our families to consider having their children take part in these beneficial dental health services offered by Capital Dental. Permission forms should be returned to the school office.
