Prosper ISD High School Dress and Grooming

The District High School Dress Code policy applies to all schools in Prosper ISD grades 9-12, with the exception of students in uniform for a school sponsored extracurricular event. *

The responsibility for the dress and grooming of a student rests primarily with the student and his or her parents or guardians. Any clothing, personal appearance, or personal standard, which in the judgement of administrators disrupts the educational environment shall not be permitted.

Allowable Dress & Grooming

● Students must wear clothing including both a shirt with pants or skirt, or the equivalent and shoes.

● Clothing must cover undergarments and all tops but extend past the waistline. (Crop Tops are not an allowable clothing item on campus)

● Fabric covering all private parts must not be see-through.

● Hats and other headwear, including hoodies, are not allowable in the hallways, cafeteria and other common areas.

● Dresses, shorts, skorts and skirts must extend below the undergarment area at all times whether in a standing or sitting position. If tights, leggings, or other form-fitting pants are worn, the buttocks and pelvic region must be covered at all times by a dress, shirt, skirt, or shorts.

● Clothing must be suitable for all scheduled classroom activities including physical education, science labs, and other activities where unique hazards exist.

● Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear.

Non-Allowable Dress & Grooming

● Clothing and accessories may not depict, advertise or advocate the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances.

● Clothing may not depict any explicit or obscene pictures or words.

● Clothing may not use or depict hate speech targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected groups.

● Clothing, including gang identifiers, must not threaten the health or safety of any other student or staff. Including portrayal of weapons and violence.

*This code is not to be construed so as to apply to those pupils in certain elective subjects such as band, organized sports, or to students in voluntary student organizations which are called upon from time to time to represent their school in public events. Teachers and sponsors of these subjects and organizations will continue to require those standards of dress and appearance that they deem appropriate and which have served in the past to mark those school representatives with honor and distinction.

If the principal determines that a student’s grooming or clothing violates the school’s dress code, the student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school and return to the classroom. If the problem cannot be corrected at school, the principal will work with the student and parent to obtain an acceptable change of clothing for the student in a way that minimizes loss of instructional time.

Repeated or severe offenses may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.
