News and Notes
- Medicine- Our Berryton Office is open on all school days from 8-5. Medicine should be brought into the office and dropped off by parents and guardians. Please do not send medicine to school with children.
- Office Communication- If your child is sick or needs to picked up early or will be arriving late please notify Mrs. Tanya at howbertt@usd450.net. Additionally, if your child's transportation home will be different (ie. parent pick up instead of riding the bus or going home with a friend) an email must be sent by 3:00 pm to Mrs. Tanya at howbertt@usd450.net and Mrs. Heather at augustineh@usd450.net stating these changes.
FastBridge Testing- Students are screened three times per year to assess their progress in math and reading. In the next few weeks, students (1st grade-6th grade) will take the FastBridge screener in math and reading. First grade FastBridge assessments are individually assessed by teachers. From 2nd grade to 6th grade, the FastBridge screener takes approximately 30 minutes per subject. Teachers use these assessments to identify needs for our "What I Need" (WIN) times when students work on skills and strategies for their personalized goals.
FastBridge data will be shared with parents during Fall Conferences, but you are always welcome ask your teacher for results.

A Note from the School Counselor
- New Student Group: We are excited to share that a new student group began this week! This group meets for 20 minutes each week during the first quarter to support students who are new to BES this year. If your student is new to BES and did not bring home a consent form for the group, please contact Mrs. Boyer at boyerm@usd450.net to ensure they can attend.
- Counseling Lessons: We are thrilled to announce the start of our weekly whole-class counseling lessons! Each class from K-6 receives a 30-minute lesson, while Pre-K enjoys a 15-minute session. This month, our lessons will focus on how the school counselor can assist students, as well as getting to know each other and Mrs. Boyer. It’s been wonderful to reconnect with all our BES Buffalos this week!
If you have any concerns or questions about your student, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Boyer at boyerm@usd450.net or by phone at 785-730-5280. Let us know how we can support you and your student.
BES Art Corner
This week in art class we created a sun collaborative piece! We all SHINE together at BES! K, 1st and 2nd grades worked on identifying primary and secondary colors. They also can identify warm and cool colors! Kinders painted Cool cats and Warm dogs to demonstrate their knowledge of the two different color groups. 1st and 2nd grade started their first directed drawing piece! They are creating warm and cool colored sunsets while also focusing on using different line techniques! 3rd and 4th grades learned about our Artist of the Month- Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was an art teacher for 35 years! She was also the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York's Whitney Museum of American Art. Her art was also on display at the White House three times! Her art has a vibrant rhythmic mosaic style and the students worked hard to copy her style. 5th and 6th grades started their Zentangles! These line patterns will continue into next week! If you have questions, please feel free to reach out at selmanj@usd450.net.
