New website launches to help students apply for federal and state financial aid for college
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for federal financial aid. It is also used to apply for more than $130 million in Maryland scholarships and grants available through the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
To help families with the application process, the commission has created a new webpage and has extended the Maryland financial aid deadline to submit the 2024-2025 FAFSA to June 1, 2024. To be notified of eligibility for Maryland scholarships by April 15, however, families are encouraged to file their FAFSA by March 1.
Nominate an outstanding principal or assistant principal to be honored
All BCPS stakeholders and community members are invited to nominate outstanding administrators for BCPS Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year for 2024-25. Finalists for each level (elementary, middle, and high) will participate in the BCPS Principal of the Year and BCPS Assistant Principal of the Year competitions.
The BCPS Principal of the Year and BCPS Assistant Principal of the Year will represent Baltimore County in statewide competitions.
Nominations are open now through Monday, January 29.
Scholarship Opportunities
The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, Inc., works with generous philanthropic donors to provide scholarships to BCPS students who plan on pursuing post-secondary education. Scholarships are provided through The Education Foundation Scholarship Program and The Education Foundation Private Scholarship Program via Naviance, accessible to BCPS students.
Last school year, the foundation was proud to award 129 scholarships totaling nearly $40,000 to graduating seniors. As community partnerships grow, new scholarships are added to the list of offerings.
A new Mission Moment blog post lists the scholarships currently offered by the foundation as well as information about how students can apply and how interested community members can support the scholarship programs.
First Financial Federal Credit Union will be giving one $3,000 scholarship to a graduating senior at every high school that the credit union serves during the 2023-2024 school year! All students will apply for the scholarship application via the First Financial Scholarship page

Mental Health & Wellness
Free telehealth therapy available to BCPS high school students through new partnership with Talkspace
BCPS has announced a new partnership with Talkspace, a leading online behavioral health care company, to provide free, unlimited telehealth therapy for all BCPS high school students ages 13 and above. More than 32,000 students now have access to high-quality, messaging therapy and evidenced-based mental health resources. This districtwide program, which began in late December 2023, offers support at a critical time, given that teenagers across the nation are facing rapidly rising rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Eligible students interested in therapy can sign up, take a brief assessment specific for teens, and get matched with a dedicated, licensed therapist. Once matched, therapy sessions take place on Talkspace’s secure and encrypted platform, accessible from the teens’ smartphones, tablets, or computers. Teens can communicate with their therapists at any time with an unlimited number of private messages at no cost. The efficacy of Talkspace’s message-based therapy has been validated by 20+ published studies conducted in partnership with major research institutions, including Columbia University and New York University. More information on the program, including registration and parental/legal guardian consent, is available online.
