News and Notes
Thursday and Friday we spent time getting to know one another in our classrooms, and visiting Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) stations to learn expectations. See below for more information on our stations for recess. Thursday, our incredible PTO hosted two big events: the Boo Hoo Breakfast for parents of Kinder students and the annual HH Back to School Bash. There was a great turn out for both and the evening celebration had music, pizza, a gaming truck, inflatables, fire trucks, and more! Thank you to everyone that came out to celebrate the start of the 24-25 school year. We love our community and so appreciate the continued support and connection. The PTO also welcomed Mr. Small, our new Assistant Principal, with a huge yard sign! Thank you to the PTO for all of the planning and hard work that went into these celebrations!
We can't wait to welcome all families to join us for Open House on Tuesday, August 27th, from 7:00-8:30 pm. We will review the ways we build community, curricular expectations for each grade level, and general information about the year. More information to come soon on the schedule!
Heather Hill Recess
This week, we have been teaching our Hornets the safest ways to play when outside. We asked for some parent feedback before school began and used that feedback to decide, for the time being, to move our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders away from the primary playground to the south field for play. This is an extra layer of precaution while construction is completed on the Detention Basin and the permanent fencing is placed. In addition, volunteers from Flossmoor Village Hall have been and will be present during recess to ensure students stay away from the fencing.
We had indoor recess on Thursday due to the rain which allowed us time to discuss outdoor play. On Friday, we specifically reviewed two PBIS Cool Tools to help keep students safe. Below are the two tools so that you can discuss and reinforce these with your children at home. Additionally, we are using cones to show students safe boundaries for play with recess equipment. We will continue to get updates from the Village to share as the work on the Basin progresses. If you have questions about the Detention Basin, please feel free to reach out to John Brunke, the Flossmoor Director of Public Works at jbrunke@flossmoor.org. If you have any questions about recess, please feel free to reach out to Principal Humm (chumm@sd161.org) or Assistant Principal Small (csmall@sd161.org). Thank you!
Attendance is Important!
Although the flyer below focuses on the early grades, it's true for all of our scholars! We need students in school so they can do their very best learning. We understand that when children are sick, they should stay home. Students should be fever free for 24 hours before coming to school. Other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and severe cough should be reviewed with medical professionals. If students are not ill, we expect our Hornets will join us daily for learning. We look forward to seeing them every day and learning together!
