COUNSELOR UPDATE
This month all classrooms will be focusing on cooperation and conflict resolution. We all experience conflict in life. Whether we are frustrated with a friend or in an argument with a family member, we need tools to help us navigate conflict successfully. Students will practice using the Tree of Choices, which is a simple tool to lead us toward successful conflict resolution.
1. The Roots of the Tree:
- Identifying if the problem is big or small.
- Big problems require help from an adult, which usually means someone is being hurt.
- Small problems can be solved on their own.
2. The Heart of the Tree: Naming the emotions you are feeling.
3. The Branches of the Tree: Make a choice to:
- Move it out (step away from the problem)
- Talk it out (talk through the issue or connect with a friend/trusted adult)
- Breathe it out (practice some strategies that help us calm our emotions before responding)
Miles of Smiles
Miles of Smiles (Level Up Kids) will be at HOPEWELL ELEMENTARY
FEBRUARY 26th – MARCH 20th, 2025!
Miles of Smiles, a program of Level Up Kids, provides free dental care to children in the Northland who do not have access to oral health services. The dental care will be provided to students at HOPEWELL during the school day February 26th – March 20th! All care is provided by a licensed dentist and assistants, and all patients receive a comprehensive exam, cleaning and x-rays.
Please register ASAP if you would like your student to be seen during the school day. We highly encourage online registration, which is quick, easy and convenient! You can register right from your phone!

Paper forms will also be sent home in your student’s backpack or folder. If you wish to complete the registration that way, please fill out in its entirety and return as soon as possible.
Please contact Karen Schaff (816-359-6175) or Katie Coulson (816-359-5567) if you have any questions or need help registering your student.
Our New 3rd Qtr. Goal!
Our 3rd quarter reading challenge has begun!
So far, Hopewell Hawks have turned in a total of 14,115 reading minutes!
Our goal this quarter is 125,000 reading minutes!
We are asking parents and families to help encourage reading at home. Don't forget to log those minutes read over the winter break and AMI days.
Minutes can be logged by using the paper bookmarks or the link to the
website: https://sites.google.com/parkhill.k12.mo.us/hopewell-elementary-digital?usp=sharing
Deadline to order 3/15!!
Recess Attire
As the weather gets cooler, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor play. Students will go outside for recess every day, weather permitting. Kindly send them with the necessary outdoor attire.
Inclement Weather Days
Well, we are all pros at AMI Days after 5 in a row! Should we have additional winter weather resulting in a school cancellation, the district will call a SNOW DAY, which means students would not be expected to complete classwork. The other difference is that these days will extend the end of our school year.
Everything you need to know about AMI days and snow days can be found on the Park Hill School District website below.
Spring Party - Updated Information 🌷🌼🌺
Due to our originally scheduled Spring Party date conflicting with Ramadan, we will now be having our Spring Parties on Friday, April 4. 1st grade has a field trip scheduled for this day but will be back in time for their party during their Specials time. Thank you for your flexibility!”
*There will be no Valentines or treats exchanged at school.
Friendship/Valentine Themed Parties updated to "Spring Parties"
We understand that holidays are very important to our entire community. We will continue our practice of recognizing holidays at school without celebrating holidays. There are many opportunities for students to participate in holiday celebrations with their families, community groups or friends outside of school. While we are at school, we will focus on creating opportunities that all students will be able to enjoy without the need for students to opt out of activities. We thank you in advance for your support and understanding.

Webinar Opportunity
Beyond the Game: Supporting Young Athletes in a Competitive World Webinar
The webisode is entitled Beyond the Game: Supporting Young Athletes in a Competitive World and will be held live on Monday, January 27, 6:00-7:00 PM. This webinar will focus on the unique psychological challenges young athletes face and the critical role parents play in fostering a supportive environment. We’ll take a deep dive into the psychology of young athletes, with a special focus on bridging generational perspectives on relationship building, emotion regulation and competition. We will also discuss the pressures of competition over the years, the impact of self-esteem on performance and how to help teens handle setbacks. As youth sports evolve, so do the mental health needs of athletes. We will discover practical strategies to foster resilience, open communication, and mutual understanding to help young athletes achieve their best in a healthy, balanced approach both on and off the field.
Click here for more details and to register. To see all past and upcoming webisodes, visit the Student and Family Support page (scroll down to Mental Health and Healthy Living Resources, then expand the Family Webinar Series section).

Attendance, Absence, Lateness
Every child is urged to form excellent habits regarding attendance and promptness. A good start to the day helps foster a positive attitude. If your child is absent, please call the school office (816)359-4410 before 9:10am. If you fail to report the absence or lateness, our attendance messenger will call out at 10:00am to notify you that your child is not in school. This is a practice we’ve instituted to ensure the safe arrival of our children.
Absences or lateness may also be reported through your infinite campus parent portal.
Student Dismissal Plans, Transportation Day-to-Day Changes
If your student is going to have different transportation, a phone call or email from the parent/guardian must accompany the request. Please contact the office prior to 3:00pm to request a change in transportation. Changes to ride an alternative bus will only be issued for a change in daycare or for the safety of the student. If an alternative person is checking out your student, the person must have their ID scanned.
Students being picked up prior to the end of the school day, please arrive in the office prior to 3:30pm. Parent/Guardians who arrive after 3:50pm, will need to join the car rider line or wait until dismissal begins for their child to be called out of class.
If your child is a bus rider, it is imperative that we plan for any transportation changes prior to dismissal. Buses leave once they are loaded.
Transportation App
First View Bus App for Families
All students scan their badges as they board the bus, giving you access to live updates as to the location of your child's bus and the anticipated time in which the bus will arrive at your stop. This is especially helpful when buses become delayed while in route for various reasons. Check out the information below to get set up!
If you have questions or experience difficulty in setting this up, please contact the Hopewell Office.

PTA Clothing Center
The Park Hill School District PTA runs a clothing center that provides free, gently used clothing, plus new socks and underwear to district students. Please visit our Facebook page or the PTA Clothing Center website for updated information.
The PTA Clothing Center serves all Park Hill School District students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The PTA asks you to bring proof that you are currently enrolled in the Park Hill district. This could be a student ID, dated letter from a principal or social worker, class schedule, or enrollment form. You can also show us the district portal with student information in it.
Donations are welcome at the Clothing Center anytime, year-round. There is a blue bin in front of the garage of the clothing center, which is at 8009 N Atkins, just south of the Gerner Family Early Education Center. Please make sure your donations are clean, in good condition and bagged in kitchen-sized bags that the volunteers can lift.
PBIS
Soaring to Success
We believe it is our job to teach our children expectations just like we would teach the curriculum. Through Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), we have developed a framework that sets clear and consistent language throughout the building.
Each week, a Hawk from each class is recognized for being an outstanding Hawk and Soaring to Success! They receive a certificate and get their picture on a bulletin board in our main hall.

Birthday Favors
Approved Birthday Favors:
Students may bring a birthday treat or favor to school to share with their classmates, as long as they come from our list of treats that contain none of the eight (8) major allergens - milk, wheat, egg, soy, peanut, tree nut, fish, and shellfish.
Thank you for understanding that all classroom treats must come from this list because we do not have the staff capacity to check for allergens that could threaten the health of some students.
