The Wake County 4-H Spaces program was implemented by Wake County Cooperative Extension in 1991. Youth development educators facilitate group sessions to assist youth in making healthy life choices. Our goal is to provide appropriate life and survival skills that will enhance the quality of life and promote a positive sense of future purpose for our participants.
Spaces is designed to assist youth in developing an understanding of:
INNER SPACE - the individual/self relationship
SHARED SPACE - life shared with family and individuals in their immediate surroundings
OUTER SPACE - the potential for growth and talent in society
4-H Spaces serves youth ages 12-16 in topics such as decision making, critical thinking, conflict resolution, violence prevention, substance use prevention, communication skills, positive community involvement, and self-empowerment.
4-H SPACESTOO serves youth ages 16-18 with a primary focus on youth applying what they have learned in group to their real-life situations to enhance their educational and/or career development.

Deliver Fresh Produce
to Patients in Need
Want to help alleviate food insecurity in the Triangle?
In search of volunteer produce delivery drivers, food packers, and delivery confirmation callers with Root Causes’ Fresh Produce Program this holiday season: a student-run service based out of the Duke School of Medicine that connects food insecure patients with access to nutritious fresh fruits, vegetables and shelf-stable items. We currently serve over 400 patients and their families throughout the triangle with biweekly deliveries straight to their doorsteps.
Volunteers are needed to be:
Packers - Help our distribution warehouse leaders pack fresh produce and shelf-stable items into bags for 150-200 patients each week! Packing starts every Saturday (going on 130+ straight weeks!) at 8:30AM at Farmer Foodshare (902 N Mangum St, Durham), and generally takes about 2 hours. No skills required – adults and children are all welcome!
Drivers - Help deliver food right to the homes of our patients in need of support. Volunteers pick up produce and support bags from Farmer Foodshare on Saturdays between 9:00 AM and 10:45 AM and deliver these items to patient homes along pre-assigned 1.5-2 hour driving routes. We will happily reimburse for gas up to $100 per driver!
Delivery Confirmation Callers - Call and/or text up to 8 patients with the assistance of a script between the Tuesday and Thursday before a Saturday distribution to confirm that they would like a delivery. An email with instructions will be sent to all volunteers at the beginning of each week. This role is KEY for making sure the right bags get to the right people/addresses and helping us stay in touch with our patients.
Sign up to drive HERE, to pack HERE, and to be a caller HERE. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at fpp-contact@duke.edu.
