The Buzz
SPRING TERM - 6th FEBRUARY 2025

Message from the Executive Headteacher
This week was children's mental health week and we were pleased to invite Jess, our mental health support worker to a year 1 and 2 assembly, she shared strategies that children could use to help themselves and their families to keep "their buckets topped up." Please ask the children about their strategies.
I would like to remind parents about the uniform requirements around hair bands, we are seeing some very large, colourful and glittery bands which are great fun but are not suitable for school. Please look at the uniform policy below. Hair bands should be very modest in size, plain and simple in style and in school colours which are green and red.
Year 2 children will be visiting Wisley to support their curriculum learning. To enable your child to go, please log onto Arbor and give permission and make a voluntary contribution. If we do not collect enough, the visit may not be able to go ahead.
As part of Safer Internet Day next Tuesday, children will be part of an E-Safety Assembly next Monday, which will be run by Open View Education.
The Rags 2 Riches collection will take place next Tuesday 11th February 2025 - details further down this newsletter. Remember no school uniform please.
I hope you enjoy the weekend when it comes.

Year 2
Thank you for attending the 2D and 2M class assemblies. The children have truly enjoyed sharing their work with you, and it has been a highlight for them. 2B class assembly will take place tomorrow at 2.30pm and 2P are eagerly looking forward to their assembly on Friday, February 14th, at 2:30 pm.
In Maths, we have been continuing our focus on money, working with coins and notes to make various amounts. The children are gaining confidence in recognising different coins and notes used in England, and are increasingly adept at using them to solve one- and two-step problems. Please continue to role-play with money at home, using real-life scenarios to help deepen their understanding.
In our Sky Riders topic, we have begun exploring the text Violet the Pilot by Steve Breen in English. The story follows Violet, a young girl who dreams of becoming a pilot and builds her own flying machine to prove her skills. Despite facing scepticism, her determination leads to success as she saves the day and earns the respect of others.
The children received a special message from Toby, the lollipop man; he has set them on a mission to design a new transport machine for Hampton. The children have been busy designing, describing, and creating adverts for their inventions, which will also tie into an upcoming clay art project. We are focusing on adding key writing skills such as subordinate clauses, persuasive language, adjectives, and expanded noun phrases to make their adverts stand out.
In History, we have been delving into the achievements of the Wright Brothers and their persistence in creating the first successful engine-powered flight. We’ve discussed their struggles and resilience, as well as how aircraft have evolved over the past 120 years, from wood to metal, and even how some planes can fly without a pilot today.
In Art, we have been inspired by the works of Bridget Riley and Charles McGee. The children are using their art to create drawings of London landmarks and abstract sculptures.
In Science, we have continued learning about plants and their growth stages from seed to full-grown plant. The children have started growing beans and are keeping a bean diary to track their progress, eagerly observing the conditions that best support growth.
In PE, the children have shown resilience by continuing their lessons despite the chilly January weather. We are focusing on target games this half term, learning to throw overarm to a partner and a target at varying distances. Indoor PE this term is centred on dance.
Team Earth - Litter Picking
Team Earth have joined the 'Picker Pals' initiative and have been very busy helping to make the school environment look tidy and free from litter. The Year 2 representatives went out with Mrs Davies with a large bag ready to fill with any rubbish they could find. We spent some time on the EYFS playground before heading out to the front of the school where we found even more rubbish that had been blown in by the wind. We then went out onto the KS1 playground and worked as a team to take care of the school grounds. Year 1 'Team Earth' will be litter picking this week and we will share photos in next week's Buzz. We can't wait to get back out and litter pick soon!
