How Can I Help My Student Succeed on EOGs?
- Arrive to school on time! Students who are late are not able to take their test and will have to wait until a make-up day.
- Leave cell phones at home! Cell phones cause mis-administrations for individual students and sometimes whole classrooms. Please encourage your student to leave their phones at home on testing days.
- Eat breakfast! Fueling your brain is important for successful testing. Whether you eat at home or arrive early enough to school to get breakfast here, give your body and brain the energy it needs to think.
- Get a good night's sleep! Remind students to turn off those video games and put the phones down at a reasonable hour the nights before testing.
- Take a deep breath and don't panic! Sometimes we get too anxious about exams and tests, and that fear can keep us from doing our best. EOGs are important, but they are only one measure of a student's success. Talk to your student about taking the test seriously, but remind them that their scores aren't who they are!
EOG FAQs
Q: Can I pick my child up when they finish the test?
A: It depends. We will not be able to call into testing rooms to retrieve students during the testing period nor will they have their phones to send or receive messages, but afterwards, yes, you may check your child out following normal procedures.
Q: When will we get scores?
A: Score reports will be sent home on 6/6. They will also be visible in your student's PowerSchool portal. We will let you know when they post!
Q: If my student doesn't pass, can they take it again?
A: Certain students who meet specific criteria may be invited to participate in remediation and retesting. The school will contact those families directly in the days following the tests.
Q: If my student doesn't pass, will they have to repeat the grade?
A: An EOG score alone doesn't determine promotion. Retention conversations have already been happening with potentially affected families.
Q: How do EOG scores impact my student?
A: Certain courses, like advanced math classes, have EOG score requirements. In addition to course placement decisions, EOG scores are used as a data point to help determine what supports or enrichments students may need to reach their full potential.

7th Grade Math Placement 2025-2026
Do you have a 6th grader in Accelerated Math 6 or AIMM? As we look ahead to next school year, please keep the following placement criteria in mind. Students in these classes will take either Accelerate Math 7 or Math 1 next year. Students hoping to take Math 1 must meet at least three of the following criteria:
- Level 5 on 6th grade EOG (Math)
- 90th percentile or above on the Winter NWEA MAP assessment
- 90th percentile or above on the Spring NWEA MAP assessment
- Completion of Summer Bridge to NC Math 1 course with a 80% or higher on Post Assessment during summer between 6th and 7th grade year
Taking Math 1 Next Year?
The Math Department is offering Summer Virtual Courses for students going into Math 1 next school year. All virtual courses are self-paced Canvas Courses utilizing Zearn and/or Nearpod and run from June 16-July 24. Internet access is needed to participate and devices may be checked out from the school for use during the course.
- Going to Math 1 in 7th or 8th Grade? "Virtual Bridge to NC Math 1" is for students currently enrolled in AIMM or Accelerated 6 who will be skipping Accelerated 7 to enroll in NC Math 1. A final exam will be administered at the end of the course. This bridge course is REQUIRED to take Math 1 in 7th Grade unless the student meets the three other criteria listed above.
- Going to Math 1 in 8th Grade or 9th Grade? "Ready for Math 1" is for students who want additional support to be ready for Math 1. There is no final exam for this course. GCS teachers will provide instruction on major concepts from Math 1. This course is RECOMMENED to better prepare students for their first high school credit course. Students taking Math 1 in 8th grade may alternately register for the "Virtual Bridge to NC Math 1".
- Guardians will use this link to enroll students in the appropriate courses.
- Registration must be complete by June 6th.
- Students must be currently enrolled (2024-2025) in a GCS school.
Let's Close Out This Year!
