OCT 24, 25: Data Carpentry Workshop (presented by the JABSOM Health Sciences Library)
We are excited to invite you to an upcoming Data Carpentry Workshop, hosted by the JABSOM Health Sciences Library. This workshop is designed to equip researchers and students with foundational data management and analysis skills, focusing on data organization, cleaning, and visualization. · Location: Session on October 24 will be held at JABSOM Library's Quiet Reading Room; Session on October 25 will be held at JABSOM Library's Computer Lab

First Friday Open House from the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence
The Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence (OVPAE) ensures excellence in teaching and learning endeavors across University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa academic programs by working with and through faculty and executive management to plan, develop, coordinate, improve and manage a dynamic and responsive portfolio of academic programs.
To increase access to the campus, provide guidance on hot topics, and accelerate the sharing of ideas, OVPAE invites all UH Mānoa personnel to Hawaiʻi Hall for our “First Friday” open houses.
Faculty and staff are welcome to stop by with questions, comments or ideas to share with any OVPAE staff from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Hawaiʻi Hall 209 conference room.

Want to learn more about critical thinking skills, mentorship and coaching, effective feedback, and assessment tools? What about leveraging artificial intelligence in your teaching? We hope you will join us October 23-25, 2024 for the live streaming presentation of Harvard Medical School’s CME program, Principles of Medical Education: Maximizing Your Teaching Skills. This is a great opportunity to enhance your teaching and invest in your own well-being.
This comprehensive course offers the latest strategies and tools for both new and experienced educators to teach effectively to all learners, including trainees in all health disciplines, faculty, scientists, veterinarians and allied health professionals. Participants will learn tangible strategies to improve small group teaching and lectures as well as practical skills such as how to give feedback and how to manage professionalism challenges. Additionally, there will be an emphasis on enhancing ones career as an educator with explicit teaching on best practices to inspire and mentor learners across a wide variety of formats.

RESEARCH/SCHOLARSHIP
DEC 11 Application Deadline: PIKO GUMSHOE Advanced Training in Grant Writing
Applications for the 2025 PIKO GUMSHOE are now open! GUMSHOE is an intensive workshop on advanced grant writing. Applicants should be preparing proposals in response to an NIH Notice of Funding Opportunity for a diversity supplement, career development (K) award (including K99/R00), research grant (R01, R03, R15, R16, R21, R34, U01), etc.
Sessions (on zoom) will be held every other week for 3 hours, starting on Friday, January 17, 2025 (1:30-4:30 PM). The workshop culminates in a mock study-section review of your proposal on May 9, 2025.

Notice of Intent to Publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for High-Priority Research in Tobacco Regulatory Science (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)
Purpose
This Notice is to inform the extramural research community that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Tobacco Regulatory Science Program (TRSP), participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs), and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) intend to issue a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) seeking R01 research applications for new High-Priority Research in Tobacco Regulatory Science (Clinical Trial Optional).
The NOFO will solicit applications to support new high-priority biomedical and behavioral research that will provide scientific data to inform the regulation of tobacco products to protect public health. This NOFO will include the new simplified peer review framework (SRF) and the Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives.
This Notice is being provided now to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.
Only New applications will be eligible. The NOFO will have one application cycle.
The NOFO is expected to be published in Winter 2024, with an expected application due date in Summer 2025.

A Catalyst of Change: Indigenous Innovation at UH, A UH Innovation Conference, a unique opportunity to learn about, and engage with partners and practitioners bridging and uplifting Indigenous knowledge and ancestral practices.

NOV 13: NIH Invitation - Native Transformations in the Pacific Northwest: Stories of Strength in a Public Health Crisis Documentary Screening
You are cordially invited to attend the documentary screening, Native Transformations in the Pacific Northwest: Stories of Strength in a Public Health Crisis. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institutes of Health’s Tribal Health Research Office (THRO) are hosting this screening in honor of Native American Heritage Month on November 13 at 1:30 – 3:30pm ET. The film builds upon the Indigenous-led Native Transformations Project, a research collaboration funded by NIDA led by the Northwest Indian College in partnership with three Coast Salish Tribes. It follows four individuals from different Tribes as they share their experiences of strength and resilience to overcome the impacts of the opioid crisis. The event will begin with opening remarks from NIH’s Director, Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli. Following the documentary the NIDA Director, Dr. Nora Volkow, and the THRO Director, Dr. Karina Walters, will facilitate a panel discussion with several community members who appear in the documentary.
